HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PAKISTANI CULTURE

Although Pakistani culture in its present shape predominantly Islamic but it has been influenced by the various cultures of the Sub-Continent to a great extent. Moreover, British Rule (1858-1947) also left its imprint on Pakistani culture.

Salient Features of the Pakistani Culture

Social customs and traditions are very simple and reflect Islamic touch. People are very conscious about their social traditions and feel pride in following and observing them.

(1): MODE OF DRESS

Dress is in complete conformity with Islamic Standards. People, generally, wear simple but graceful dress which is called ‘Shalwaar- Qameez’.

(2): DIET OR NUTRITION:-

Our eating habits, food and social etiquettes are strictly in conformity with Islamic teachings. Muslims eat “Halal” food.

(3): Games and Sports:-

Cricket, Snooker , Basket ball, Wrestling, Hockey, Polo ,Kabaddi and Squash are some of the games played all over the country. Pakistan has won World Championship of Cricket, Hockey, Snooker and Squash.

(4): LITERATURE

Our classical literature reflects more or less common background amongst the provinces. Allama Muhammad Iqbal was not only a Philosopher, National Poet, and Politician but he was the one who put forth the Idea of Pakistan. Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Ahmad Faraz, Ishfaq Ahmad, Amjad Islam Amjad and Parveen Shakir are also well known for their literary services.

(6): Arts, Crafts And Music

Muslim period was the great era of painting, Crafts and history writing. Tensen has become a legend of classical music.. The great painters of Pakistan Gul ji and Sadiqain do not require any introduction.

(7): CALLIGRAPHY

The stylish Quran writing has been popular amongst Muslims for all the times. Mehmood Ghaznavi and Aurangzeb Alamgir were the Master of Calligraphy.

(8): Architecture

Many buildings, majestic forts and great mosques are testimony of Muslim’s achievement in the field of Architecture. The contribution of Moguls to the field of Art and Architecture will ever remain a brilliant legacy of the Islamic culture.

(9): FESTIVALS AND FAIRS:-

Eid-ul-Fitar, Eidul Adha, Eid Milad-un-Nabi are religious festivals.

Regional Festivals like ‘ Bassant’( Kite flying), Horse & Cattle Show and fairs at the shrines of saints are also held annually.

(10): Social Customs

From birth to death, social cultures, customs and ceremonies are performed by the individuals. Marriages in Pakistan are generally arranged by the parents. To attend the funeral and condolence is also the important part of Pakistani culture.
