On Wednesday, November 11
approximately 19 local veterans
came to the high school for the
Student Council’s annual
Veteran’s Day program. After
entering the gym and receiving a
standing ovation from the Silver
Lake student body and teachers,
all veterans were seated and the
program began.
After a short introduction from
Student Council President Sydney
Parr, and the saying of the Pledge
of Allegiance along with the
singing of the National Anthem,
each Veteran was recognized.
Information about how long they
served in the military, special jobs
he or she performed, and special
memories from their time in

service was included. As a
follow up to the introductions,
special guest speaker Koob
Borgeling from Holland was
welcomed to the floor. Koob,
being from Holland and living
through World War II, began
with a brief thank you to all
World War II Veterans and
then he turned his attention to
the students.
Koob was easy going and
allowed students to ask
questions about his time of
service and answered them at
will. To conclude the program
a short video about Veteran’s
Day was played, along with
each branch of military’s song
and Taps. Student Council
sponsor Trish Hinrichs had
this to say about the program,
“We were very pleased with
the turnout of Veterans. We
were very honored to have so
many show up and show our
appreciation for all that they
have done so everyone can
have the freedoms we do have
in America. Thank you to
everyone who has served to
protect us.”
There were also Veteran's
Day activities at the
elementary. The fifth grade
student council members read a
tribute to veterans and then all
students said the Pledge of
Allegiance and sang the Star
Spangled Banner. The younger
students colored a picture, and
the older kids did puzzles and
games about Veteran's Day.
