Loading/discharging onto the vessel

Cargo may be loaded directly onto the ship’s deck by sliding arrangements or driven by trailer units, provided that sufficient water depth is available alongside the loading berth in correlation with a respective height of pier. The pontoon is thereby positioned inside the vessel‘s cargo hold and used as a flush deck. Alternatively, the loading can take place via a mobile stern ramp onto the vessel’s tank top as part of a Ro-Ro-operation. In this case the pontoon is not placed inside the cargo hold.

Loading/discharging onto the pontoon

The vessel is moored at the waiting berth or at anchorage while a tug is pulling the pontoon to the load-ing/discharging pier. Cargo may be loaded onto the pontoon by sliding arrangements or driven by trailer units, in case of insufficient water depths or restricted access for the vessel (inland water ways, rivers and canals).

One or two coupling pontoons can be positioned in opposite direction to the moored side in order to gather more stability during the loading/discharging operation.

Sea voyage

Due to the usage of a sea going vessel, the usual limitations typical for towage operations can be neglected. The significance of weather windows is drastically reduced which is of importance especially during the winter season within the North and Baltic Sea. The shipments do not depend on the availability of towing barges and tugs. Additional assisting stern tugs mostly obligatory for tows navigating in narrows, canals, locks or harbour approaches are unnecessary in most cases, thus saving time and expenses. A positive effect of using a ship instead of towing barges and tugs is a higher sea speed (approx. double) resulting in reduced transit times, consequently offering more flexibility. This offers the potential for fuel savings depending on the total length of a voyage.
