Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Installation Guide 1. Obtain a copy of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Installation media .iso image. 2. To begin the installation, insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.x media into the system. 3. Boot the installation media via F12 boot option menu. 4. Select the appropriate installation (legacy or UEFI).

For Legacy Install (MBR)

For UEFI Install (GPT)

Legacy and UEFI install procedures are essentially identical. Please refer to the below steps for each install process method.

31

1. Select “Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0” to begin the RHEL 7.x installation.

32

2. Select the language you would like to use during the installation process.

33

3. The installation summary menu is the central screen for setting up an installation (see below).

Instead of directing you through consecutive screens, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation program allows you to configure your installation in the order you choose. Use your mouse to select a menu item to configure a section of the installation. When you have completed configuring a section, or if you would like to complete that section later, click “Done”.

Only sections marked with a warning symbol are mandatory. A note at the bottom of the screen warns you that these sections must be completed before the installation can begin. The remaining sections are optional. Beneath each section’s title, the current configuration is summarized in which you can determine whether you need to visit the section to configure it futher.

34

DATE & TIME

- There are three ways for you to select a time zone: o Using your mouse, click on the interactive map to select a specific city. A red pin appears

indicating your selection. o You can also scroll through the “Region” and “City” drop-down menus at the top of the

screen to select your time zone. o Select “Etc” at the bottom of the “Region” drop-down menu, then select your time zone in

the next menu adjusted to GMT/UTC. - If your city is not available on the map or in the drop-down menu, select the nearest major city in

the same time zone. - Specify a time zone even if you plan to use NTP (Network Time Protocol) to maintain the

accuracy in the system clock. - To set the date and time using NTP, leave the “Network Time” switch in the “ON” position and

click the configuration icon to select which NTP servers Red Hat Enterprise Linux should use. To set the date and time manually, move the switch to the “OFF” position. The system clock should use your time zone selection to display the correct date and time at the bottom of the screen. If they are still incorrect, adjust them manually.

- Once you have made your selection, click “Done” to return to the Installation Summary Menu.

35

KEYBOARD

- Select the appropriate Keyboard layout and click “Done” to return to the Installation Summary Menu.

- To add an additional layout, click the + button, select it from the list, and click “Add”. To delete a layout, select it and click the – button. Use the arrow buttons to arrange the layouts in order of preference. For a visual preview of the keyboard layout, select it and click the keyboard button.

- To test a layout, use the mouse to click inside the text box on the right. Type some text to confirm that your selection functions correctly.

- To test additional layouts, you can click the language selector at the top on the screen to switch them. Click the “Options” button at the right to open the “Layout Switching Options” dialog and choose a combination from the list by selecting its check box. The combination will then be displayed above the “Options” button. This combination applies both during the installation program and on the installed system, so you must configure a combination here in order to use one after installation. You can also select more than one combination to switch between layouts.

36

LANGUAGE SUPPORT

- User your mouse to select the language, for which you would like to install support. IN the left panel, select your language of choice. Then you can select a locale specific to your region in the right panel. You can select multiple languages and multiple locales. The selected languages are highlighted in bold in the left panel.

37

INSTALLATION SOURCE

- In this section, you can specify the location you want to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux from. Choose between locally available installations media, such as a DVD or an ISO file, or a network location.

- You can specify additional repositories to gain access to more installation environments and software add-ons.

o To add a repository, click the + button. o To delete a repository, click the – botton. o To revert to the previous list of repositories, click the arrow icon. o To activate or deactivate a repository, click the check box in the “Enabled” column at

each entry in the list. o In the right part of the form, you can name your additional repository and configure it the

same way as the primary repository on the network. - Once you selected your installation source, click “Done” to return to the Installation Summary

Menu.

38

NETWORK CONFIGURATION

- Detected network connections are listed in the left-hand pane. Click a connection in the list to display more details about it on the right. To activate or deactivate a network connection, move the switch in the top-right corner of the screen to either ON or OFF.

- Below the list of connections, enter a host name for this computer in the “Hostname” input field. The host name can be either a fully-qualified domain name in the format “hostname.domainname” or a short host name in the format “hostname”. Many networks have a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server that automatically supplies connected systems with a domain name. To allow the DHCP service to assign the domain name to this machine, only specify the short host name.

- If your Red Hat Enterprise Linux system is connected directly to the internet, you must pay attention to additional considerations to avoid service interruptions or risk action by your upstream service provider.

- To configure a network connection manually, click the ‘Configure’ button in the lower right corner

of the screen. A dialog appears that allows you to configure the selected connection. The configuration options presented will depend on whether the connection is wired, wireless, mobile broadband, etc.

39

SOFTWARE SELECTION

- By default, the graphical installation program installs the “Minimal install” environment. This option provides only the packages essential to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but with advance security and flexibility.

- Typically, select “Server with GUI” environment from the left-hand pane and select “Development

Packages” from the right-hand pane. You may select as many or as little “Add-ons” for the selected environment in the right-hand pane.

- Once you selected your software choice, click “Done” to return to the Installation Summary Menu.

40

INSTALLATION DESTINATION

- Select the appropriate disk drive in which you would like to install RHEL 7.x.

41

Once all the required sections are complete, click the “Begin Installation” button. To cancel the installation, click “Quit”.

Once you click “Begin Installation” on the Installation Summary menu, you will be directed to the “User Settings” screen and progress screen. Red Hat Enterprise Linux reports the installation progress on the screen as it writes the selected packages to your system.

42

While the packages are being installed, more configurations are required. Above the installation progress bar are the “Root Password” and “User Creation” menu items.

Click on “Root Password” in the ‘Configuration’ screen above to set up a root account and

password. (Logging in as root gives you complete control over your system).

Click on “User Creation” in the ‘Configuration’ screen above to set up a user account.

After some time, you should see the progress bar say “Complete!” and a “Reboot” button appear below it. Click the “Reboot” button to complete the installation.
