Ozone – Applications and Products

PLOVDIV – 01 December 2015

What is Ozone?

Molecular weight: 48 g/mol

Density @ 1013 mbar, 0°C: 2,14 kg/m³

Max. limit for ambient level: 0,1 ppm

0,2 mg/m³air

Odor threshold: 0,01 ppm

Redox potential: 2,07 V

Comparison of oxidants:

- Oxygen (mol.) 1,23 V

- Chlorinedioxide 1,27 V

- Chlorine 1,36 V

-  Hypochlorite 1,49 V

- Ozone 2,07 V

- OH radical 2,80 V

Blue, pungent and strong smelling gas

O(3)ZONE .. The Molecule

OZONE [greek = smelling]

Strongest oxidant, effective disinfectant ! Decomposition - generation on site only !

How does Ozone Work?

Ozone oxidation follows two pathways: –  Direct - Ozone contacting microorganism or contaminant –  Indirect - Ozone disintegrates into short living, stronger, hydroxyl radicals

Both reactions occur simultaneously

Since Chlorine is still a widely used and known chemical for oxidation and disinfection, Ozone is often compared to Chlorine

Ozone acts 3000 times faster than chlorine as a bactericide for Disinfection of E-coli

6

Disinfection Mechanism Chlorine versus Ozone Bacterium structure

Chlorine must diffuse through cell wall to inactivate organism

Ozone lysis, rupture cell wall on contact to inactivate organism
