This is believed t o be a record fo r squadron s i ze and distance mowed. The squadron did hare a marked advantage, though, in tha t a l l gear w a s still packedo
The s p e c i d mission was a policing action i n the Dominican Republic. The USS ROOSEVnT made its presence known i n waters South of Santo Domingo from the 21st through the 29th of November,
9 Early October of 1961 found the "RED RIPPE&Sn f lying t a c t i c s hops and
practicing f i e l d car r ie r landings, On 5 and 6 October the en t i r e squadron requalified i n day arrested landing aboard the USS SARATOGA (CVA-60). On 16 October the squadron deployed on a one week cruise aboard the USS ROOSEVELT (CVA-42) i n company with the other aquadrone of Carrier Air Group ONE for f l e e t exercises. While returning from one of these exercises LTJG landed hard on a s l ight ly pitching deck. Upon touchdown the a i r c ra f t ' s starboard wheel sheared. There were two explosions followed by f i r e on the starboard s ide of the a i rc raf t . The a i r c ra f t had engaged number one cross pendant but the hook was torn away from the airframe and the a i r c r a f t continued up the angled deck on f i re . LTJG decided t o e jec t and did so as the a i r c ra f t neared the elevators edge. LTJG was clear of the a i r c r a f t at an estimated a l t i tude of 45 feet above the water, The main chute blossomed just prior t o Yts impact with the water, LTJG w a s returned by helo to the ship with no injur ies , The photographic coverage of t h i s incident made national media,
The last week of October and the f i r s t half of November 1961 w a s spent shooting gunnery* On 13 November 1961 the squadron again went aboard the USS ROOSEVELT for a one week cruiseo Also along on the short operation were 200 senior of f icers from the Armed Forces Staff College, An excellent air power demonstration was provided for them by the en t i re air group,
Only four hours a f t e r the squadron's return t o Cecil Field on 18 November, orders were received t o report back t o the ship immediately. The next day the USS ROOSEVELT l e f t Hayport pier for Caribbean waters,
During the next twelve days USS ROOSEVELT showed the American f lag just South of the Dominican Republic, VF-11 realized limited operations off the ship during t h i s period. A l l squadron p i lo t s at l eas t viewed t h i s small trouble f i l l e d country although no f l igh t s closer than 15 miles t o land were flown.
On 5 January 1962, Commander LQFTIN and seven other VF-11 p i lo t s flew t o Dallas, Texas, t o pay a visit t o the Chance Vought Aeronautics Corporation, This proven a i r c ra f t company was soon to provide VF-11 with twelve new F ~ U - ~ N E ~ S . An excellent s e r i e s of lectures on the a i r c r a f t and a tour of the plant were pro- vided the "RED RIPPE;RSW. Due t o a temporary s t ruc tura l weakness of the F~U-1 gun mounts, the gunnery program w a s postponed and January t raining was concentrated on Broadcast and Ground controlled intercepts. On January 26th a ltRED RIPPERt1 Jamboree w a s held at the NAS Cecil Field Officers' Recreational Facility. The reunion of past and present "RED RIPl?ERtt of f icers was most successful. On 1 February 1962 the squadron celebrated the 35th anniversary of ttRED RIPPERt3 existance.
Four "RED RIPPEBS", LCDR LT LT and CAPT , USAF made arrested landings aboard the USS ENl%R PRISE, the worlds f i r s t nuclear car r ie r on 5 February,
8 February s a w the f i r s t of 12 new F8U-2NE's delivered t o VF-11. Transition t raining progressed at a f a s t r a t e with more new a i r c ra f t coming i n each week.
In March 1962 all p i lo t s became fu l ly qualified with the new super Crusader and its outstanding radar,
Much w a s accomplished in t h i s f a s t moving month, I n mid March f i e ld car r ie r landing practice w a s commenced and during l a t e March all VF-11 p i lo ts qualified i n ca r r i e r landing with the new F ~ U - 2 I E 's aboard the USS FORREST& (cVA-59).
