by Patricia WestlakeExecutive CoordinatorSmithtown Emergency Food PantryAlmost 26 years ago members
from seven congregations withinthe Township of Smithtown saw aneed to provide food to residentswho could not afford to feed theirfamilies. The Smithtown Emer-gency Food pantry is an ecumeni-cal project that depends on theparishioners of the memberchurches to provide food and tostaff the pantry on a rotating basis. The purpose of the Food Pantry
is “To aid residents in an Emer-gency Food Crisis.....” It is locatedin the Parish House of St. Thomasof Canterbury Episcopal Church at90 Edgewater Avenue in Smith-town and is open Mondaythrough Friday from 9 a.m. until
12 noon. The food pantry pro-vides a 3-day supply of food to in-dividuals and families. They alsoprovide Thanksgiving baskets (lastyear 67 families received a holi-day dinner).Over the years the need for the
pantry has grown. We are servingmore families now then ever be-fore and with the economic situa-tion in our country we anticipatethis need to continue to expand. From January 2009 through Octo-ber 31, we have assisted 850 fam-ilies, providing 24,975 meals. Thisis a 75% increase over the sameperiod the previous year.We greatly appreciate the gen-
erosity and compassion of thecommunity in assisting us in thisministry. Our shelves are emptyright now but we have faith thatthe churches, schools and school
clubs, Boy and Girl Scouts, ath-letic teams, local businesses, hos-pitals, fraternal and socialorganizations, town employeesand residents will provide assis-tance in the coming months, justas they have in the past. For additional information or

This Thanksgiving I am Thankful for Margie and her Kickboxing Class...

www.energy-difference.com
In September, when my schedule changed, I was forced to create a new gym schedule. That's how I ended up in Margie'sClass. After just a few classes I saw changes in my body. Myweight dropped 18 lbs and my whole body feels firmer. I amstronger, leaner, and happier for the changes. Anytime I creditMargie on my weight loss. I haven't increased the amount of timeI spend at the gym or the amount of effort I invest in eachsession. Following Margie's routine is the cause of my success.Every year I enjoy hitting the ski slopes and this year I can't
wait to tear it up. With Margie's help I'll have more stamina andstrength and I won't have to worry if I'll be able to zip up mypants. Another year older? I think not!
Thanks to Margie and the staff at Energy for making fitness a part of my life.
Congratulations Karen!

The Smithtown Township ArtsCouncil is pleased to presentthree performances of “MR.MOUSE AND THE HOLIDAYCANDLE” at the Mills PondHouse, 660 Route 25A in St.James, on Wednesday, December30, 2009. The performances aregeared toward children Pre-Kthrough 3rd grade. Children willhave fun making puppets after theperformance.Long Island puppeteer Katie
Polk believes her puppet art helpspeople develop their own creativ-ity. She builds all her own pup-pets, using items she finds onbeaches, in thrift stores and any-where that may be home toclothes pins, buttons, emptythread spools, odd material andthe like. Just about any itemaround may give life to one ofKatie’s puppets. Combining sounds, textures,
colors and rhythms Katie uses her
inventive imagination to bring herpuppet characters to life. She likesto incorporate “fun, silliness, imagination and a sense of won-der” into her puppets so “anyone,at any age can enjoy themselves.” Advance reservations are re-
quired and space is limited to 45per performance. Performancetimes are 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3p.m. To register please call STACat 862-6575. Tickets are $8 perperson.

Dear Natalie,I read in
your articlethat you should start with the rugwhen beginning your room dec-orating. Can you give me sometips on what size rug I should belooking for? My living room is15’ x 20’, my dining room isabout 15’ x 15’ and my entryfoyer is 8’ x 12’. The steps goingto the second floor go up fromthe entry foyer. Fran W.
Hi Fran,Glad to hear you’re planning
before buying! Carpets can bemarginal (that means they covermost of the floor leaving a smallborder, perhaps a foot or so),seating oriented (meaning theycreate an “island” for your furni-ture) or scatter rug size (whichcreates a focal point). When shopping for rugs, I like
to start with the largest one first. In your case, the living roomcould take a 12’ x 15’ or 10’ x14’ because of its size (I alwayslike to leave at least a foot or twoof flooring around the perime-ter). For example, if your furni-ture is placed in the center ofyour room facing a fireplace, therug should be centered in theroom and you could leave asmuch wood or tile around as youchoose. But, if the sofa seating isoff to the side and there’s a gametable or baby grand piano else-where in the room, it’s okay toput a rug under the main areaand leave the rest uncovered. The dining room gives you
some interesting options sinceit’s almost square. You could ac-tually get a 10’ x 10’ square orround rug if your table is round,or a 9’ x 12’, if the table is rec-
tangular. Pieces like your serverand breakfront should be off therug. Make sure the rug you se-lect can completely cover thearea under the table and chairs(without leaves inserted in thetable). I like to place chairs halfunder the table, but I choose arug that allows for full extensionwhen people are sitting. Your entry foyer could take a
round rug (5’ or 6’) or a rectan-gle (5’ x 7’ or even 6’ x 9’) de-pending on how close you wantit to be to your front door. Re-member, it’s not a door mat.You should also know that
many Oriental rugs are slightlyundersized – the standard 4’ x6’, 6’ x 9’, 8’ x 10’, 9’ x 12’ and10’ x 14’ are usually 3” less allaround. The machine-made andhand-knotted are usually full sizeand some may come a footlonger than standard. Always
check the tag and if your rug hasfringe, measure that as well orhave it removed, if you choose. So good luck on your rug jour-
ney. It’s a great beginning for en-suring decorating success.

by June LiardiNew year, new start, new ideas.
Make it a year of exploring, un-derstanding, using, sharing andappreciating all the natural worldaround you and your family, evenif it is only just outside of yourback door. You could start right away by
feeding the birds this year. Thereis not much food available tothem during these months. Theycan be very entertaining to watch.See how many different types visityour feeder. Notice the time theycome to feed and the seeds eachprefers. They will stay aroundcome spring, and reward you byfeasting on the insects that alsovisit your garden.Start to compost. Within a short
time you will have a wonderfulamendment for your soil. You can
just make or buy a compost bin. There are many different sizes andtypes available. You can getstarted today, just pick a sunnyspot and start saving all yourkitchen scraps, vegetable and fruitpeels, coffee grounds and teabags. Anything except meat, bones and fats will do. Comespring time, add garden leaves, weeds and grass clippings. Keepthe pile moist and turn often. It isworth the effort. With all your beautiful compost
you surely will want to grow yourown herbs, vegetables, fruits andflowers. Start with a small garden,
maybe one thing of each or justone pot of each. Children love togrow things so let their enthusi-asm move you. It is a thrill to planta seed and, a few months later, eatsomething from that plant. Thetaste is just wonderful, it is cost ef-fective and you are doing a smallpart in conserving energy. Growextra and share your new passionwith family, friends or a soupkitchen. It is just a win-win.Make a pact with yourself to get
your exercise outside every daythis year. Pick a new route for youto walk, run, bike or whatever it isyou like to do. Find new parks ornature sanctuaries. There are somany all around us. Enjoy thebeauty of the area during eachseason and share your experiencewith someone.

When you come home fromyour workout you should have acomfortable, quiet outside retreatto go to. If you don’t have a deck, patio or other private area, youcan create a dining area just byusing some potted plants. Sur-round the area with a variety ofdifferent-sized pots and plants.Put some poles or a trellis in somepots to grow climbing plants for anatural screen; some berry bushesor dwarf fruit trees for an ediblescreen. You have a few months toplan it all out.Get your children out in nature,
out in the garden, the woods or atthe shore. With all our technologynow, we more than ever, need tokeep our children in touch withthe natural world. The followingare some items you may want toput together for your children and
their outdoor discoveries.
• Magnifying glass, to find thingswe would normally overlook –a tiny flower or a little bug.
• A journal or notebook for notetaking of daily discoveries, de-scriptions, photos or drawings, emotions, directions to thatspecial place.
• A piece of clear plastic, plexi-glass, on which they can placeinsects for better viewing from
above and below.• A canning jar with the ring lidand a piece of nylon screeningfor catching, viewing andstudying (and then releasing)insects.
• A measuring tape to measureand record heights and lengthsof various plants and insects.
• A camera to capture those veryspecial images or occasions.
• A flashlight for any night timeexpeditions.Maybe it is time for a year with
a little less technology and a littlemore back to basics, to get morein touch with nature. Hope it is agreat year for all of us.

submitted by NationalGridWith the winter upon us here
are some tips to save energy andmoney:
• Using the smallest appliancefor the job while cooking willalways save energy. Microwave
• ovens use less than half theeergy required by a conven-tional oven.
• To improve oven efficiency, keep the doors closed as muchas possible and bake severaldishes at the same time and
• temperature. Every time thedoor is opened, heat escapes.
• Use the smallest pan andburner needed for the job.Cook with lids on your pans. For example, cooking pastawithout a lid on the pot canuse three times as much en-ergy.
• If the oven self-cleans, turn iton while the oven is still hotfrom cooking.
• Use the no-heat air dry featureon your dishwasher which willalso save energy by as much as15%-50% If you have an olderdishwasher, turn the dish-washer off after the final rinsecycle is complete and open thedoor. This allows air drying.
• Avoid running water continu-ously while doing dishes, washing up, brushing teeth, orshaving. Try filling up the sinkand using a stopper instead.
• Load washers and dryers to ca-pacity, but don’t overload.Overloading can cut down onefficiency.
• Consider converting yourwood-burning fireplace to en-ergy-efficient natural gas. Tra-ditional masonry fireplaces areonly 10%-25% efficient andthey draw heat from yourhome up the chimney. Naturalgas burns cleaner and is up to80% efficient without the has-sle of wood, ashes and smoke.A simple flick of a switch willturn on and off the warmth andglow of your fire.
Editor’s note: National Grid has a 20-year track recordof partnering with its customers to pro-vide successful, award-winning efficiencyprograms in its U.S. service territory. Tofind out more about the energy efficiencyprograms in your area, including detailsof potential incentives and forms for in-stalling additional energy efficiency meas-ures, visit National Grid’s web site atwww.powerofaction.com.

F I N A N C I A L S A V V Y
by Scott Posner, CFP, A.A.M.S.We’ve pretty much seen it all
this past year – a bear market, along rally and even a period ofneither-up-nor-down. But eventhough we’ve only got a fewweeks left of 2009, you still havetime to make some moves thatcan pay off for you in 2010 – andbeyond. Here are a few suggestions to
consider:
• “Max out” on your iRA – andmake regular contributionsnext year. For the 2009 taxyear, you can contribute up to$5,000 to a traditional or RothIRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 orolder. And you have until April15, 2010, to fully fund your2009 IRA. Of course, it’s notalways easy to come up with
lump sums of money, but dowhatever you can to make upfor any shortfalls in your IRAfor 2009. And in 2010, con-sider setting up automaticmonthly contributions to yourIRA – it’s a much more efficientway to maximize a great retire-ment-savings vehicle.
• increase your 401(k) contribu-tions. If your employer permitsit, try to add more money toyour 401(k) or other retirementplan before the year ends. Byincreasing your 401(k) contri-butions, you can lower youradjusted taxable income whileyou potentially build more re-sources for retirement.
• Convert your traditional iRAto a Roth iRA. Depending on
your individual situation, aRoth IRA, which offers the po-tential for tax free growth, pro-vided you meet certainconditions, may be a betterchoice for you than a tradi-tional IRA, which offers the po-tential for growth on a taxdeferred basis. Consequently, ifyou meet eligibility limits, youmay want to convert your tra-ditional IRA to a Roth IRA.However, this conversion islikely going to be a “taxableevent,” so you’ll need to havemoney available outside yourIRA for the tax bill. • Consolidate your investmentaccounts. Instead of having anIRA with one firm, some otherinvestments with another and acash-value insurance policywith a third, you might want toconsolidate all your assets withone provider. That way, you’llbe better able to align all yourassets with a central, unifiedinvestment strategy.
• Review your insurance cover-age. Over the course of a year, you could experience signifi-cant changes in your life: mar-riage or divorce, the birth of anew child or the departure ofan older child from yourhome, the start of a new job orretirement from an old one,and so on. submitted by Lawrence Glazer,CLU, ChFC, LUTCFMany of us share a dream of
helping a nonprofit group we feelstrongly about – our church, ouralma mater, a cultural institution,an environmental group, a humanrights crusade, or a medical or so-cial service organization. Wewould love to do something thatwould help others, to make a sig-nificant contribution, but feel thatonly the rich can afford to make asizable donation. Through the gift-ing of life insurance, an individualof moderate means can make asignificant donation. In addition to making a heartfelt
contribution to a worthwhilecause, gifting life insurance to acharity* offers many practical ad-vantages to the donor – possibletax deductions, nominal cost of
the transaction, and simplicity. There are many methods for usinglife insurance to boost a favoritecharity; below are the most com-mon: • Designate the Charity as
Owner and Beneficiary – Thismethod benefits the charityand gives the donor a bonus inthe form of income tax bene-fits. Premiums on such a policyare deductible to taxpayerswho itemize their deductions.Consult a tax professional fordetails.
• Designate the Charity as Beneficiary – As policyowner, you retain the right to makechanges to the policy includ-ing changing the beneficiary.Premium payments with thisarrangement are not tax de-
ductible. However, when thedonor dies, the estate receivesa charitable estate tax deduc-tion for the proceeds, as al-lowed by law.

continued from page 74• Donate an Existing Policy – If you own a policywhose coverage is no longer essential, you maychoose to donate it to a charity. The donor couldirrevocably assign or transfer the policy to acharity as owner and beneficiary. This type of giftis generally not subject to gift tax, and in mostcases may be eligible for a charitable income taxdeduction.
• Set up a Charitable Remainder Trust – This is apossible solution to disposing of unproductiveappreciated assets, such as real estate that is un-encumbered. If the owner keeps the asset, it mayyield little or no income; if sold, it may incurcapital gain taxes. A charitable remainder trust isa planning tool that can benefit the donor, theheirs, and a charity. It is a complex transactionthat should not be undertaken without advice ofan attorney or an accountant familiar with sucharrangements.
With the dramatic reductions in government fund-ing experienced by many organizations, the gen-erosity of private citizens is more important thanever. It’s true that just one person can help make adifference. With the gifting of life insurance, you cannow help make a significant difference. Your supporthelps continue the good works of a worthwhile en-deavor, to keep helpful programs afloat. Charitablegiving also enriches donors’ lives, providing the pro-found sense of satisfaction, of “doing the right thing.” For more ideas on how life insurance may fit into
your charitable giving plan, please contact your in-surance, financial and legal professionals.

by Jim WinterWhether it’s the work of elabo-
rate theft rings or random individ-ual crime, auto theft is bigbusiness. On average, accordingto the Insurance Information Insti-tute (III) a vehicle is stolen every29 seconds in the United States at
a cost of about $7.4 billion a yearin 2007. Insurance for theft is in-cluded in the comprehensive partof your auto insurance policy thatalso covers fire, vandalism andweather-related damage. The number of insured cars
stolen and their cost directly affect
insurance premiums. By taking afew precautions you can reducethe chances of having your vehi-cle stolen.
• Always remove your keys fromyour parked vehicle.
• Park with your front wheelsturned sharply to the right orleft and apply the emergencybrake. This will make it diffi-cult for a thief to tow your car.
• Consider installing an antitheftdevice or buying a car with animmobilizer system that pre-vents a thief from driving offwith the car.
• Park in a locked garage, pa-trolled or well-lit area when-ever possible.
Unfortunately, carjacking hasbecome a more commonmethod of vehicle theft. Carjack-ing is the attempted or com-pleted robbery of a vehicle by astranger that includes the use ofa threat or force. You can protectyourself from this crime.
• Don’t roll down your car win-dow to a suspicious person.
• Keep your car doors lockedand windows rolled up.
• If a suspicious person is nearyour parked car, don’t ap-proach it. Keep walking andcontact area security or police.
Insurance companies work to-gether with the National Insur-ance Crime Bureau (NICB) tocrack down on criminal opera-tions. If you suspect vehicle theftactivity, notify your local police, call the NICB anonymously at800-835-6422 or report a crime atwww.nicb.org.

“T’was the day before Christmas, but there was no cheer.
No jingle bells jingled, no sound of reindeer.
The word had got out that Santa was sick.
There’d be no friendly visit from jolly St. Nick.
The people were sad; no gaiety sounded,
For Christmas had come, but Santa was grounded.
He walked down the street, and what should he see?
The lights were still on at the local D.C.
Now Santa was not one to like a new tactic,
But all else had failed, so he’d try Chiropractic.
He entered the office, and saw with a glance
In a place such as this, illness hasn’t a chance.
The people were smiling, the music was snappy,
With all the patients contented and happy.
In a very short time, to judge by the clock,
He was in the adjustment room talking to Doc.
“Oh Doc, take a look at the size of this pack!
Have you any idea what it does to by back?”
Poor Santa was miserable;just barely able,
With the help of the Doctor, to get on the table.
The Doctor was gentle. Without fuss or tussle,
He examined the vertebrae and relaxed every muscle.
He spotted the trouble and then with a click,
He started aligning the ailing St. Nick.
And Santa felt aches and pains slipping away.
In no time at all he began to feel gay.
The air was a-tingle with new fallen snow,
And healthy Kris Kringle was rarin’ to go.
So may I, at this time, echo his cheer?Merry Christmas to you
and a Happy New Year.”– Author unknown

by John L. Belford, Esq.A guardianship proceeding be-
comes necessary if a person is notable to manage his or her daily af-fairs such as personal hygiene, diet, banking and other financialmatters. Such a person is not com-petent to initiate a guardianshipproceeding or to assist in theguardianship proceeding. Accord-ingly, a guardianship proceedingtakes away all of the incompetentperson’s decision-making powersand passes those powers to a per-son chosen by a judge of the NewYork State Supreme Court in aguardianship proceeding. Thatperson is usually a family memberwho is willing to undertake thetask. The court will first determine
that the person is, in fact, incom-petent, and then appoints aguardian to manage all of the in-
capacitated person’s affairs, in-cluding medical, financial and alldaily living matters. That personcould be a spouse, an adult child,or another person concerned forthe incapacitated person. Becausethe incapacitated person is deter-mined to be incompetent, he orshe has no input as to who will beappointed by the court as his orher guardian. obligated to make periodic reportsto the court regarding all of the in-capacitated person’s affairs suchas living arrangements, financialcircumstances and health carematters. In summary, a guardian-ship proceeding is exceedinglytime consuming, expensive andlitigation intensive. The good news is that a

The Department of Motor Vehi-cles wants to reminded motoriststhat on November 1, 2009 a newlaw took effect that eliminates theuse of portable electronic deviceswhile driving, which includes tex-ting while driving. The use of portable electronic
devices, such as hand-held mo-bile telephones and personal dig-ital assistants (PDAs), whileoperating a motor vehicle has ledto distracted driving, which cre-ates a threat to public safety on
our roadways. Crashes due to driver inatten-
tion or distraction are on the risein the U.S. and they have resultedin fatalities. The National High-way Traffic Safety Administrationestimates that 25% of all police-reported crashes involve some
form of driver inattention. Thisnew law will help limit driver dis-traction and inattention by pro-hibiting any operator in the statefrom using any portable electronicdevice while driving, and in turn, enhance highway safety. The new law excludes the use
of an iPod or Global PositioningSystem (GPS), and the use of ahands-free cellular phone to talkis still legal. The new law is punishable with
a fine of up to $150.

It’s a wonderful life – for some.As the year end approaches, wecan’t help but to reflect on all ofthe homeless dogs and cats thatnow have a chance at happinessthanks to you! Your generous do-nations have made it possible forLittle Shelter to continue to res-cue, rehabilitate and ensure thesafety of thousands of animals.Thank you! You’ve never let usdown. At Little Shelter, their approach
to animal rescue is a bit different.Age, physical condition and so-cialization issues are never crite-ria for rescuing a dog or cat whoselife is in jeopardy. Most of the an-imals in their care have beensaved from kill shelters, and an in-creasing number are being surren-dered by people being displaceddue to financial hardship. They’re
making a difference, but togetherwe can do so much more.Like you, we don’t understand
how anyone could turn away froman abandoned, helpless animal.Every life is precious and isn’tmeasurable in dollars and cents.Unfortunately, the poor economyand increased costs have affectedus all. Little Shelter has stretchedevery dollar as far as they can, butsurprise expenses keep poppingup with increased frequency. Theanimals need your support, andthey need it now!The life of every animal counts
at Little Shelter. Every donationcounts too! And while we con-tinue to face many challenges, weknow that 2010 will bring a yearof promise. You can help thatpromise become reality by be-coming part of their Circle of
Hope. Your donation to LittleShelter will come full circle – youwill make a donation – that dona-tion will help the animals – youmay benefit with your year endtax deduction.Give the gift of life this holiday

of the NYS Department of MotorVehicles and Chair of the Gover-nor’s Traffic Safety Committee(GTSC) wants to remind motoristsabout the new child passengersafety law that took effectstatewide on November 24, 2009. The law requires children under
the age of 8 to be restrained by achild restraint system in a motorvehicle. It will take the place ofthe current law, which requireschildren under the age of 7 to berestrained by a child restraint sys-
tem.New York joins more than 21
other states requiring childrenunder the age of 8 to be restrainedby a child restraint system in amotor vehicle. An appropriate child restraint
system is one which meets thechild’s height and weight as rec-ommended by the manufacturer.Depending on the size of thechild, the restraint system may bea child passenger safety seat or abooster seat. The vehicle’s safetybelts alone are not defined as achild restraint system. In 2008 more than 6,300 chil-
dren under age 9 were injured incar crashes in New York State. Ac-cording to the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administrationmotor vehicle crashes are a lead-ing cause of unintentional injuriesand deaths for children.
For more information pleasevisit www.nysdmv.com. You canalso visit www.safeny.com to finda child safety seat event or a list ofpermanent seat fitting stations.Additional safety resources andinformation, including the latestproduct recalls may be found atwww.nysconsumer.gov.

by Linda M. BocchichioBack pain is treatable and bet-
ter yet preventable. No secrethere, the key is exercise. For yearsthe chiropractic profession hasadvocated the use of exercise inpreventing and healing back in-juries. As of late, this has becomethe forefront of new and excitingdevelopments in the field of backcare. It has been found that in aslittle time as two days musclesbegin to weaken from underuse.Movement not only prevents
muscles from atrophying, it alsolocalizes pain and keeps it fromradiating. It stimulates the releaseof our body’s natural pain killers –endorphins. A large majority ofback injuries are a result of dam-age to muscles – due to inactivitythen sudden demands (the week-end athlete syndrome) or to yearsof improper posture – strain on
muscle tendons and ligaments.Muscle damage can cause
spinal subluxation and the prob-lem will worsen. With proper chi-ropractic care and exercise spinalfunction can be restored, pain
greatly decreased and muscles re-laxed and toned.Exercise can also help disc pain
sufferers. Exercise “squeezes” thedisc allowing nutrients to enterand metabolic waste products toexit the disc. It helps balance thesoft jelly-like substance nucleuspulposus within the disc.Walking, stretching, yoga, gen-
tle weight training, etc., or exer-cises that strengthen your backand abdomen and are all part ofpreventing and healing back in-juries.Begin to exercise your way to
health.
