OUR MOTHER OF MERCY THE FOURTEETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Gospel is from St. Matthew 11: 25-30. Pagans and Jews had the same hardships of life to face as we have, and even greater ones. They earned their daily bread with the sweat of brow and body. Their illnesses were more frequent and less beara-ble than ours, for they had not the medical helps that we have. Death came to young and old then as it does now, but for them it was a final parting from loved ones, and no hope of a future happy meeting served to lighten their sorrow. All their crosses were crushing weights, sent to make life more miserable. Life on earth was passed in gloom and darkness and there was no shining star in the heavens to beckon them on or give them hope. Surely God is good to us, to put us into this world at this day and age, and give us the light of faith, and the knowledge of God and of His loving plans for us, which make the burdens of this life so relatively light and even so reasonable for us. We still have to earn our bread. We still have sickness and pains. We still have death stalking the

earth, but unlike the people before Christ we now see a meaning to all these trials. The yoke of Christ is not really a yoke but a bond of love, which joins us to Him, and through Him, to our loving Father in heaven. The rule of life which He asks us to keep, if we are loyal followers of His, is not a series of prohibitions and don'ts. It is rather a succes-sion of sign-posts on the straight road to heaven, making our jour-ney easier and safer. He does ask us to carry our cross daily, that is, to bear the burden of each day's duty, but once the cross is grasped firmly and lovingly it ceases to be a burden. Ours is a world which is in an all-out search for new idols. It is a

world which has left the path marked out by Christ, and forgot-ten or tried to forget, that man's life does not end with death. To be a Christian and to have the light of faith to guide our steps in this neo-pagan darkness, is surely a gift, and a blessing from God, for which we can never thank Him enough. Thank you, God, for this gift. Please give us the grace and the courage to live up to it and to die in the certainty that we shall hear, as we shut our eyes on the light of this world, the consoling words, "come you blessed of my Father, possess the kingdom prepared for you."

FATHER BART’S CORNER

My sisters and brothers:

In our liturgical calendar we see

the names of people who are

officially recognize as saints. One of them is a little girl, her

name is Saint Maria Goretti.

St. Maria Goretti was born of a

poor family in Corinaldi, Italy, in 1890. Near Nettuno she

spent a difficult childhood

assisting her mother in domestic duties. She was of a

pious nature and often at

prayer. In 1902 she was stabbed to death, preferring to

die rather than be raped. Her

mother was present at her canonization in 1950, the first

time a parent was present for a

child's canonization.

"It is well known how this young girl had to face a bitter

struggle with no way to defend

herself. Without warning a vicious stranger (actually

Alessandro Serenelli who lived

with his father in the same

house as the Goretti's.) burst upon her, bent on raping her

and destroying her childlike

purity. In that moment of crisis she could have spoken to her

Redeemer in the words of that

classic, The Imitation of Christ: "Though tested and plagued by

a host of misfortunes, I have no

fear so long as your grace is with me. It is my strength,

stronger than any adversary;

it helps me and gives me

guidance." With splendid courage she surrendered

herself to God and his grace

and so gave her life to protect her virginity.”

Pastoral Letter

To all Priests, Deacons,

Seminarians, Religious Men

and Women, and Faithful Laity

of the Diocese of Fort Worth

Dear Friends in Christ,

In reflecting on the

celebration of the birth of our great nation, the frequently

spoken words of Pope Saint

John Paul II came to mind, “Freedom consist not in doing

what we like, but in having the

right to do what we ought.” As you are aware, Governor

Abbott has re-instituted

restrictions on those establishments of business

that have been unable to

maintain compliance with the

three fundamental measures for ensuring the safety of

workers and the public:

Hygiene/Cleanliness (hand-washing) Physical Distancing,

the Use of Masks

or Face Covering. He has further issued an

executive order requiring the

wearing of masks and facial coverings with a strong recom-

mendation that mask be worn

in church services. It is important to note that what the

Governor is addressing is not

that these measures are inef-

fective, it is that people have not been responsible in

applying them resulting in

adverse effects to our public health and economy.

We as the local church of the Diocese of Fort Worth have

been consistently doing this

well since May 2, when we returned to the public

celebration of Mass, an

essential aspect of the exercise

of our religious liberty. In my letter to you last week, I

reminded you that the

circumstances of this pandemic and its effects upon

our society remove the

obligation to attend Sunday Mass. I also re-emphasized the

necessity for the consistent

and responsible applications of the three above-listed safety

measures and protocols

for the sake of the safety of all

involved (especially the elderly and the vulnerable) with the

celebration of mass and the

other sacraments.

The fact that so many

of you have risen to this level

of accountability with integrity and even valor does not remove

the fact that each of us can

grow complacent especially

after several months of this pandemic with its

accompanying pressures.

I strongly urge you to take this weekend and the following

weekends to examine our

practices at Mass and that we are strictly complying with

these measures with a sense of

solidarity and charity. In other words, we are accountable to

ensure that what we intended

to do regarding safety is in fact consistently being

accomplished.

Some areas to review for complacency include:

ushers meeting the faithful at

the door and escorting them to their seats

with pews marked off, ushers

dismissing and escorting

people out of church in an orderly way to prevent

Clustering in small groups,

frequent sanitizing, the wearing of masks by the faithful and

clergy (when not speaking)

throughout the Mass.

Let us continue to strive

together to set a good example

of how the local church can

work together to worship safely amid this pandemic. Please

continue to exercise the

principle of solidarity in applying these safety measures

and we will affect a prophetic

message for leadership so needed in our society today.
