OLMC VISION STATEMENT
“Here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, we seek to create a respectful environment, that enhances learning, nurtures our young, and empowers our whole school community to authentically live out
the faith that we proclaim."
Term 2 Week 3 Dear Parents and Carers Year 5 Bickley Camp
It was a real privilege to able to spend last week on camp with our Year 5 Class. I wish to thank and acknowledge Miss Kate Dunstan for her dedication to organizing such a wonderful camp experience for her students. I would also like to thank Mrs Linda Yates for her attendance and support of both Miss Dunstan and the Year 5 class. It was also great to have both Mr Robert Rossi and Mr John Rijs also attend and spend some time on camp. But most importantly I wish to acknowledge the Year 5 students for their enthusiasm, high participation rates and manner in which they engaged with their activities, the staff and each other at camp. Year 3/4 Environmental Initiative
Our students in Years 3 and 4 have been engaged in a variety of learning opportunities this term to further their understanding around environmental issues including waste management. The students recently attended an excursion to a Recycling Plant and last Friday conducted their own waste audit of our school’s waste on a “typical day”. At tomorrows school assembly the students will present some of these learnings and present a new initiative to help lessen our school’s impact on the environment. ASCS Winter Sports Tomorrow the Year 5/6 students will commence the first of their interschool
sports afternoons against St Patrick’s. The students will compete in Soccer, League Tag, European Handball and Lacrosse. We wish all our competitors the best of luck. NAPLAN This week students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia participated in the annual NAPLAN assessment. This assessment tests the types of skills that are deemed essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.
OLMC is committed to, and places value on a diverse variety of testing and assessment regimes that inform us as teachers how to best cater for our learners. Christian Service Staff Meeting On Tuesday’s Staff Meeting, Mrs Dianna Alteri from the Faith Formation Team from Catholic Education WA presented a workshop developing our understanding around Christian Service. The notion of our students, staff and indeed families being charged with engaging in and supporting those less fortunate is an aspiration the staff have identified for our school in 2016. We hope to provide further evidence of our commitment to Christian Service in the
coming weeks and months. Remember to Live Christ In Your Hearts….. Forever! Kevin Duffy Principal

BUILDING RESILIENCE Last Wednesday our school parent community combined with St Pat’s to take part in a parent workshop to learn more about the new Highway Heroes program. This program is aimed at supporting our children to develop
growing resiliency and become more confident when dealing with challenging situations. Thanks to Ms. Rowlands and Yvette Kelly who organized the evening and our P and F who sponsored the workshop. CONFIRMATION RETREAT Today our Year 6 students participated in a Confirmation Retreat at The Mary McKillop Centre. This was an opportunity for them to deepen their faith and learn more about this important Sacrament. The focus of the workshop was on how the students can use the gifts of the Holy Spirits to help them in their daily life. LIFELINK –SERVICE TO OTHERS Our Lady of Mount Carmel is participating in the LifeLink Day Schools Initiative which is an opportunity for us to support people in need within our community by raising funds.
The purpose of LifeLink is to promote understanding of the Church’s response to people in need within the community, to instill in students a sense of responsibility for caring for those less fortunate and to also provide education and information of the work of LIfeLink social services agencies, which help many thousands of Western Australians in need each year. LIfeLink supports the unemployed, the physically and intellectually disabled, families and individuals in crisis, migrants and refugees and many other agencies which support those in need. This year we have decided to hold a sausage sizzle at school with all money going towards the LifeLink 2016 Initiative. CONNECTING WITH YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING
We encourage you to check your child’s class blog in order to keep up to date with their learning focus and class events. These blogs are updated every three weeks and are now linked to our revamped school website under ‘Our Classes”. RECONCILATION CERTIFICATES If your child made their First Reconciliation this year, a reminder that their certificates are available from the church. These can be collected before or after any mass.

The Australian Government is pleased to introduce the Healthy Weight Guide developed by the Department of Health to help Australians achieve and maintain a healthy weight. The Healthy Weight Guide consists of an
interactive website as well as supporting print materials.
The Healthy Weight Guide website contains information and tools that will guide users to:
Set goals and plan healthy meals and physical activity
Monitor what they do and manage challenges Find information and support that will guide them along the way.
Being a healthy weight is important for all Australians. A healthy weight can not only help you live longer but it can also help you to enjoy life more. Many of us, however, don’t know how to tell if we are a healthy weight. Or if we do
know we’re not a healthy weight, we’re not sure how to make the changes that will get us heading in the right direction. The Healthy Weight Guide is here to help you. You’ll find information about healthy weight, what to do to
achieve and maintain healthy weight, how to do it and resources to help you along the way. www.healthyweight.health.gov.au

GOSPEL READING
YEAR C
Pentecost Sunday,
15 May 2016
Gospel Reading: John 14:15-16, 23-16
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John The Holy Spirit will teach you everything.
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If you love me you will keep my commandments. I shall ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you for ever. ‘If anyone loves me he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our home with him. Those who do not love me do not keep my words. And my word is not my own; it is the word of the one who sent me. I have said these things to you while still with you; but the Advo-cate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you.’ The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Birthday Party Hot Topic Birthday parties are a hot topic for tweens! Almost all the students we have worked with in GirlPower & GoodGuys have, at some point, had hurt feelings over a birthday party. For both the kids handing out the invitations and the kids receiving them, birthday parties are stressful… and they’re stressful for parents too! Why are they so anxiety-provoking? Well, there are a few reasons: As children enter tweenhood, parents are no longer renting a bouncy castle and inviting the whole class. Parents begin to limit birthday parties to a smaller circle saying things like, “You can invite 3 friends this year!” Sleepovers are often introduced and, let’s face it… there are only a certain number of kids that parents and kids can handle overnight. With Friendship Fact #2, Every Friendship is Different, kids are highly aware that the friends they are comfortable having over for a sleepover may not be the same friends they’d work on the Science project with! All children want to be included and, as they move into pre-adolescence, they become more aware of popularity and fitting in. This results in kids developing FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and they are desperate to be part of the gang. Kids seem to think there’s an unwritten rule: If someone invites you to their party, you must invite them to your party. The more parties they’ve been invited to, the more kids they feel obligated to invite. With years of birthday parties under their belt, that’s a lot of kids and a lot of pressure to invite people they perhaps do not want to. So, what can kids and parents do to take some of the stress out of birthday parties? While it’s not fool-proof and being left out is inevitable sometimes, here is what we recommend over at GirlPower & GoodGuys to minimize the sleepless nights and hurt feelings: Invitations must be sent privately! We encourage children to email their invitation to their friend, personally deliver it to their mailbox, or extend their invitation over the phone or in person. School is not a private place and because of the reasons listed above, kids talk and word travels like wildfire in those hallways and classrooms. If the party is limited to a certain number of people, let the invitees know who is also invited. This is so that children don’t accidentally talk about it in front of someone who’s not on the list and so they’re not tempted to go around solving the mystery. Believe me, if they don’t know who’s going, curiosity will get the best of them and they’ll try to find out! Remind your child that keeping the event on the down-low applies to their online world as well. Posting pics of the party on Instagram or Snapping their friends who aren’t there is definitely going to result in someone feeling left-out. In this day and age, digital etiquette needs to be discussed and kids sometimes forget that their social platforms are in the spotlight! As kids enter into tweenhood, it’s really important that parents prepare their children for this new landscape of birthday parties and help them understand they can no longer expect to be invited to every.single.party. Those days are over! Share a story with your child about a time you were not invited to something and it was no big deal. Yeah, nobody likes to be on the outside looking in, but this is not a deal-breaker. This is a normal part of life and doesn’t mean their friendship is over or that person doesn’t them us as much. Helping children to not take it personal and be cool with the fact that we all have different friends helps to ease some of the pressure that children feel so they can focus on more important things…like learning the words to a new Tay-Tay song (#squadgoals), mastering their MineCraft world, watching StarWars, or sending poop emojis to their friends just to confuse them. Important stuff like that.
