The Earth's climate is constantly fluctuating. That means it is going up and down! This means that the temperature of the
world has been changing through time. This has been happening for millions of years and scientists are trying their
best to map the changes.
It has become a very popular topic recently with many high profiled celebs trying to raise our awareness of the issue of
climate change.

Climate change
The Earths climate has fluctuated
(changed) throughout history.
Sometimes the Earth has been
warmer, other times it has been
cooler.
The last Ice Age ended
approximately 10,000 years ago.
Overall since then there has been
a rise in temperature of 6ºc.
Quaternary Period
The Quaternary period began about 2.6 million years ago, and continues today.
In the Quaternary were the glacial periodsknown as the Ice Age.
Also, anatomically modern humans evolved.
During the Quaternary, many largemammalian species became extinct.
This was due to climate change and hunting by humans.
How has the climate changed?
A graph showing the change in global temperature over the last 450,000 years.
How has the climate changed?TASK: Stick in your graph and answer the following questions.
1. What was the temperature 400 thousand years ago?
2. What is the highest temperature recorded?
3. When was this?
4. What was the lowest temperature recorded?
5. When was this?
6. What is the range of temperature? (Lowest to highest)
7. What is the trend of the temperature graph?

answer these
questions in your
book
By answering these questions you have just
described a trend. This is when you notice a
pattern in some data which allows you to
describe what has happened. In this case you
could describe the worlds fluctuating
temperature throughout history!
You have used years and temperatures to show
your findings. That’s what an excellent
geographer does! You are now going to use
these skills to describe the last 10,000 years….
Describing trends
This is a great example of how to pick out a trend. Notice how
the changes in temperature, the years it happened and what
temperature it is.
