• A methodology to investigate / assess research data management practice.
• What are the characteristics of research data assets?
• How do researchers work with data?
What is DAF?
University of the Arts London, 13th March 2013
• Set the focus and scope of your study- Investigate data holdings, capacity growth, current
practice…• Decide what approach(es) will work best
- Online survey, interviews, focus groups, desk research…• Look at earlier examples that you can repurpose

How does DAF work?
University of the Arts London, 13th March 2013
Two-stage data collection1. Multiple-choice, online questionnaire of all research-active staff2. One-to-one interviews with selected researchers
Topics covered:– types, sizes and formats of research data– data ownership– storage– security – sharing and access (short and long term)
How has it been used?

University of the Arts London, 13th March 2013
• A tool to agree RDM strengths and weaknesses
• Aims for consensus across multiple viewpoints
• Uses a 1-5 scale for maturity
• Based on the three-legged stool model from Cornell & AIDA toolkit
Aims of CARDIO?

How is CARDIO used?• Provides quantitative analysis of RDM support
• Highlights areas of best practice
• Used for gap analysis/strategy development
• Makes the case for future investment
• Demonstrates progress

• Data management planning is a growing requirement from funders, publishers and HEIs, in the UK and internationally
• Supportive of good research practice, according to RCUK
• A cross-cutting activity involving multiple stakeholder types (researchers, librarians, IT managers, support staff)
Data Management Planning
University of the Arts London, 13th March 2013
A web-based tool to help researchers write plans
It features:• Templates based on different requirements • Tailored guidance (disciplinary, funder etc) • Customised exports to a variety of formats• Ability to share DMPs with others

University of the Arts London, 13th March 2013
• A variety of risk factors, both internal and external, affect the management of digital research data
• Risks can be tangible (fire/flood) or intangible (accidental data loss leading to reputational impact)
• They may exist in isolation, or lead to other risks if not adequately managed

Other services...CARDIO Used at research group or department level to assess activity and
data management infrastructure and contribute to an institution-wide view
Data Asset Framework DAF is a structured mechanism used to identify what data exists and understand how research data are being managed and shared
Customised DMP We can work with you to develop an institution-specific instance of DMP Online for developing data management plans that fit funder requirements before and after an award of grant
Policy development We can assist in the development of institutional policy
Workflow assessment Using tested methodologies we can analyse current research data workflows
Training We can train people in the use of many of the above tools and in generic skills such as data quality assessment
Costing We can assist with the development of costing and pricing for data management services
Risk management Working with you to identify risks in current or planned research data management practice, we will make recommendations on mitigation and the elimination of those risks
