Tools - System Info System information

provides information about your computer system, such as: Hardware Software Internet Settings

Click Start, Accessories and System Tools to access the System Information tool

Tools - Computer Management

Computer Management also provides information about your computer, such as: Shared folders Local Users and Groups Device Management

For Windows 2000 Professional click Start, Settings, Control Panel and then Administrative Tools to access the Computer Management tool

Tools - Disk Cleanup Disk Cleanup deletes all

temporary files that are no longer needed

Click Start, Programs, Accessories, and System Tools to access the Disk Cleanup tool

Best used to get rid of large temporary Internet files

Tools - Defrag

The Defrag tool is used to put non-contiguous clusters back together

Helps your computer to not have to work as hard to retrieve files

Click Start, Program, Accessories, and System Tools to access the Disk Defragmenter tool

Tools - Error Checking

The Error Checking tool

(previous called scan

Disk) is used to recover

bits of files from a

damaged disk portion

Tools - Backups

Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP have a Back up Wizard tool

Right click on any drive in My Computer and then choose Properties

Select Backup Now option to begin

Additional Tools - Safe Mode

Safe Mode is like a life preserver for your computer

Sometimes your computer locks up or something bad happens during an installation

Tap the F8 key while booting to enter Safe Mode While in Safe Mode fix the computer, such as:

Uninstall software that locked the computer Use the System Restore command from the

Accessories/System Tools menu

Additional Tools - Boot Disks

A Boot Disk can be used to start your computer if something bad happens to your OS

Windows 2000 requires four floppies to create a boot disk

Use the CD MAKEBOOT utility from the installation CD

Download Tools - Installing Software Sometimes there will be

a need to install software from various locations, such as: From the Internet From a disk or CD From the Microsoft

Download Tools - File Compression

The File Compression tool decreases the size of files and/or compresses several files into one Winzip

You can use Winzip to create self-extracting files

Use file compression when sending: Large files Digital Photos Multiple Files

Download Tools - Preventing Viruses Computer viruses do

very bad things to your computer

Computer viruses are spread through email, software, sharing disk

Install Antivirus software to protect your computer

Update the Antivirus software often
