What is the problem?

Shared use can offer: • Safe, active, local option for physical

activity

• Community outreach/interaction

• Economic benefits to schools, communities

Why is Shared Use Important?

Shared use, also called joint use or community use, refers to two or more entities (a school, city and/or private organization) sharing indoor or outdoor spaces for recreational activity.

• Offer opportunities to increase daily physical activity

• Increase community involvement

• Improve relationships with the schools and community

What can shared use do?

What does it look like?

Opening playgrounds during non-school hours.

A city and swim team share a public pool.

What does it look like?

School ball fields are used by recreation softball teams

What does it look like?

Organizations offer after school programs at a local school.

What does it look like?

Policy allows for accountability & enforcement.

Policy allows for consistent implementation.

Policy establishes relationships & responsibilities.

What is a policy?

• a statement in writing

• binding

• sets out a general approach to be applied broadly

How do you get policies adopted?

• Engage: Get people excited about their vision for change

• Assess: What’s the problem? What solutions are there?

• Propose: Draft a strong policy that expresses the vision

• Advocate: Identify and meet with decision makers

• Implement: Stay focused even after a policy gets

adopted

• Detailed planning that includes sources of funding and division of responsibilities

• A recognition of the individual benefits to each partner

• Provide long-term commitment from everyone involved
