Gifted Intervention Specialists

Program’s Focus

• Math. All qualified students have a gifted math identification and a high cognitive thinking score of 120 and above.

• These scores come form the Terra Nova and InView tests given in the spring of 2nd grade and 5th grade years.

• OAT cannot be used to identify students.

Why Math?

• Changing gifted standards in the state of Ohio

• Miamisburg City Schools’ gifted student population

How Does it Work?

• Students attend math class daily.

• GIS teacher of record - grades

• Students will not miss any other subjects when the students are in their math class.

What Research Says

Mathematically gifted students will

- learn basic skills rapidly– retain content if taught at a faster pace– can reason quickly– can solve problems quickly, often skipping

steps– can form generalizations more quickly and in

more in depth ways than peers– able to see relationships among topics,

concepts and ideas without formal instruction

Math Curriculum for Gifted

• Content should have greater depth and complexity

• Should be authentic tasks• Should nurture a discovery approach that

encourages students to explore concepts• Should focus on providing complex, open

ended problems• Should also create opportunities for

interdisciplinary connections.

• Will spend the night. Leave at 5:30, return at 2:00 the next day.

• On 2nd day will do “Math Day at the Zoo”

• Overnight. Leave early 1st day and return late 2nd day.
