Each year, more than $14 billion is spent on R&D in Ontario.

More than 100,000 business and university-based researchers work on projects ranging from life-saving vaccines to nanomaterials and next generation wireless devices.

Ontario helps companies cut the costs of doing research with R&D tax incentives that are some of the most generous among industrialized countries.

Combined with federal R&D programs, Ontario’s R&D Tax Program can reduce the after-tax cost of every $100 in R&D spending to about $57, or $37 for small businesses.

KPMG ranks Canada ahead of other major industrialized countries in a comparison of R&D costs, citing a Canadian cost advantage of close to 11% over the U.S.

In 2013, the government of Ontario announced a $50-million investment in a new venture capital fund.

The fund is designed for innovative startups and emerging companies to help them grow and become globally competitive.

Eighteen of Canada’s top 50 research universities are located in Ontario.

The University of Toronto, McMaster, Western, Queen’s, Laurentian, Lakehead, Ottawa, Guelph, Waterloo and others are all internationally recognized for the quality of their research.

Specialized centres, such as MaRS Discovery District, Ontario Centres of Excellence and the province’s network of Regional Innovation Centres, offer resources such as commercialization and advisory support and R&D matchmaking.

They work with companies in various industries, such as communications and IT, energy, manufacturing, life sciences and more.

One example of a leading Ontario R&D centre is the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR), an independent, not-for-profit translational cancer research institute funded by the Government of Ontario.

OICR’s focus is on the translation of discoveries into products, services and improved clinical practice related to cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment.

In 2011, Ontario and Cisco Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance technology and R&D collaboration.

Cisco is investing in major R&D projects; increased research and development work in the province; and is helping both businesses and government increase productivity through technology.

Also in 2011, GE opened its first global Pathology Innovation Centre of Excellence (PICOE), located in Toronto.

This new centre has the potential to revolutionize pathology through digital innovation.

In 2012 Ontario and IBM Canada announced a partnership with several leading Ontario universities.

The partnership includes creating a new $210-million, world-class virtual research and development centre. The IBM Canada Research and Development Centre serves as a foundation for the research initiative.
