Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time "Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him..." The first line of today's Gospel presents a strange image. Jesus
was both by himself and with others. He was somehow experiencing the solitude of personal prayer, but was also close enough to his followers
to engage in conversation with them. Although we don't know exactly what the details were of this situation,
it does suggest for us an example of what we might call spiritual "balance." Here we see Jesus taking time to be alone in prayer, but also taking time to engage in spiritual reflection with the other members of
his community. He didn't sacrifice one for the other. He found a way to have both.
We are called to do the same. Developing the habit of personal prayer is an essential part of our spiritual lives. Like Jesus, we too need to set aside time and space to pray by ourselves, connecting as individuals with our Father in heaven. Whether it be a few quiet moments in the
morning, or time to pray at night, this kind of prayer keeps us connected to God. It enables us to give our own answer to the poignant question Jesus poses today, "But who do you say that I am?" Personal prayer
alone, however, is not enough to fulfill us spiritually. We are also meant to participate in the larger community of believers, joining together with
others in communal prayer and reflection. This, of course, happens every time we attend Mass as we gather
together at church and join in the liturgy. For some, "sacrificing" our Sunday mornings week after week may seem like too much to ask. But this is one way we can carry out the challenging command of Christ to
take up our cross and follow him.

If you have already taken the opportunity to make a pledge for this year’s Catholic Services Appeal, allow me to express my sincere appreciation. Your contribution will help the work of the Church universal, national, and local. You will also aid the parish in the rebate that we will receive for any money collected over and above our parish goal. If you have not taken the opportunity yet to make a pledge to this year’s CSA, please consider doing so. Our parish does so much for its members and it is largely through contributions such as yours that we are able to do so.
PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:
June 20: Msgr. Edward H. Vurpillat (1969) Rev. Carl J. Holsinger (1978) June 23: Rev. Louis Madejczyk (1998) June 24: Rev. Antoniu Dunca (1981) June 25: Rev. Clarence F. Danforth (2003)
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE It was a formal banquet. The minister had just finished saying grace when a waiter spilled a bowl of steaming soup into his lap. The minister silently sizzled, then said in anguished tones, “Will a layman please make some appropriate remarks?”
LET US ATONE FOR OUR SINS
Thus says the Lord: I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and petition; and they shall look on him whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only son, and they shall grieve over him as one grieves over a firstborn.
On that day the mourning in Jerusalem shall be as great as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo. (Zec 12:10-11)
A true mark of a believer is the acknowledgement that the sins we have committed have put our Lord, Jesus Christ, on the cross. Without our sins, there would have been no reason for Jesus to have to suffer and die.
Many people go through life, unfortunately, blind to the consequences of their sin.
They fail to realize that their sins truly hurt other people, hurt themselves, and hurt the Lord.
When we realize that our sins not only grieve but hurt our Lord, we become repentant and seek His mercy and forgiveness.
FAITH ACTION: Let us do what we can to atone for our sins, to ask God for forgiveness, and to do whatever we can to repair the harm we may have done to ourselves, others, and the Lord.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
Today is a special day. We ask God to bless all of our fathers and father figures in our lives: our biological fathers, our godfathers, our foster fathers, our stepfathers, and any other person who has a fatherly role in our lives. We ask God not only to bless them but to give them the grace that they need to be good, appropriate, holy witnesses of God’s love to us. We need good examples to follow. May our fathers and mothers give us the examples that we need most in our lives!
“WHAT CAN I DO?” We are always asked to do something for our parishes and we often ask ourselves the question, “What can I do?” Many times, we think that we “do not have what it takes” to contribute to the workings of the parish. Today’s bulletin is proof that everybody has something to offer. John Avila, Jr., a parishioner and college student, asked if he could work on graphics design for a festival poster. His contribution is on our bulletin cover and around the town. We all have been given unique talent. We all can do something. Look around. See what you might be able to do. And then offer to get it done. The more people involved in the life of the church, the more people’s lives “out there” will be touched.
WHAT YOU CAN DO Of course, the best thing you can do to help your parish this week is to come out and enjoy the festival. See you there!
