The images on our catalogues are the product of a design competition that is carried out each year by De Gruyter in cooperation with Lette Verein Berlin, a vocational training association. Participants designed a series of images that visually interpret the topic “impulse”. We would like to thank the Jonas Letue for his winning entry. His images show various snapshots of light and sparks, represent-ing the impulse that scholarly literature provides to support progress in society.

CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title: First comprehensive encyclopedia of interdisciplinary and international biblical reception
Contains Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, New Testament, and historical contexts
Spans biblical reception in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and other religions as well as in literature, visual arts, music, and lm
Approx. 1,500 new articles per year
Non-restrictive DRM – allows for an unlimited number of simultaneous users per campus or institution
The Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception is the rst-ever and only comprehensive reference work on the Bible and its reception. Since 2009 and the publication of its initial entries, the encyclopedia continues to be a groundbreaking reference work and is a must-have for institutions in the humanities, social and cultural sciences, as well theology and religious studies. The encyclopedia contains the most current state of knowledge on the origins and development of the Bible in the canons within Judaism and Christianity. It documents the history of biblical reception, not only in Christian churches and the Jewish Diaspora, but also in Islam, other non-Western religious traditions and movements.
Unprecedented in breadth and scope, it innovates, however, by recording how biblical texts have been read, interpreted and integrated into thought, science and culture throughout the centuries. This reference is the pioneer which compiles the most recent scienti c research on the reception of the Bible in an array of academic disciplines such as classical, literary and religious studies and archaeology as well as in cultural elds like literature, visual arts, music, lm and dance. Its content is the result of an interdisciplinary approach which transcends a purely theological or religious perspective.
Edited by an international team of scholars, EBR’s authors (currently nearly 4,000) work in over 50 countries. This ensures the international character of the entries and the up-to-date quality of the articles.

Religion and Urbanity Online will present important research contributions on religious change and the change of urban spaces and above all urban forms of life, practices and discourses on urbaneness in Europe, the circum-Mediterranean region and South Asia. It will provide historians, anthropologists, and sociologists of cities and of religion with research articles as well as overviews. Case studies on cities or urban networks or on speci c phenomena and processes will help to build a reservoir of knowledge on two overarching questions: What role do religious actors, practices and ideas play in the emergence and ongoing development of cities and “urbanity”? What role did urban actors, spaces and practices and the discourse on urbanity play in the emergence and ongoing development of religious groups and “religion”? The database is published by the Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies “Religion and Urbanity: reciprocal formations”, which investi-gates the historical contribution of religion to urbanization and the long-term co-constitution and co-evolution of religion and the urban.
All contributions are subject to double-blind review by an international editorial board. Religion and Urbanity Online is Open Access thanks to a grant provided by the German Science Foundation (DFG, FOR 2779).

Foundational work in 200 entries: Two thousand years of Jewish-Christian interaction
Joint perspectives and new avenues for the future
Access to ahead-of-print articles, i.e., not yet available in the print version
EJCR will be also available in a print version
Non-restrictive DRM – allows for an unlimited number of simultaneous users per campus or institution
Jewish-Christian relations can look back on more than half a century of striking achieve-ments. There are now initiatives and centers all over the world addressing fundamental issues. This is why now is the right moment to launch a comprehensive Encyclopedia of Jewish-Christian Relations. International experts at the cutting edge of their discipline summarize in two hundred entries more than two thousand years of Jewish-Christian interaction, assess the achievements of dialogue and provide joint perspectives and new avenues for the future.
EJCR covers a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to theological concepts (e.g., Christology, Excommunication) spiritual and religious practices (e.g., Prayer, Blessing), ritual (Circumcision, Baptism, Dietary Laws), geographic topics (Ashkenaz, Middle East), denominational concepts (Karaites, Reform Judaism) and political and historical issues (Zionism, Antisemitism). The arts play a role as well, looking at medieval depictions of the ‘Jews’ sow’ or typologies such as ‘Synagogae/Ecclesia’ depictions or the ‘wise and the foolish virgins’.
The essays are written specifically from the perspectives of Jewish-Christian relations. What we find important is that a synthesis is provided of the discussions in Jewish-Chris-tian dialogue with challenges clearly marked for each theology because of conclusions drawn in this dialogue.

Since the Enlightenment, German-speaking Jews have built an impressive cultural heritage. But the persecution and extermination of the Jewish people during the Nazi era together with emigration since the 1930s destroyed, fragmented or scattered much of this extensive German-Jewish heritage. This database compiles and collects bio-bibliographic information on more than 20,000 German-speaking Jews who were leading gures in literature, philoso-phy, religion, art, music and politics.
Based on the Archiv Bibliographia Judaica in Frankfurt am Main founded by Renate Heuer, the database is a unique document of German-Jewish heritage. Users can search biographical information on over 20,000 individuals using precise criteria, as well as study their bibliogra-phies on linked and scanned index cards. The complete database is intended to give a comprehensive overview of all of the writings or documents written by German-speaking Jews.
In addition, the database integrates even more detailed biographical and bibliographical information on 1,300 authors included in the printed Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren [Encyclopedia of German-Jewish Authors]. The database is the only resource to offer this information in a structured, searchable format.
An interface to open-access sources links the bio-bibliographic content to useful full texts.
