THE STORYA girl from the Masai community over one

month ago, reported a case to the police post of that area, about being forced by her parents into marriage.

The father of the girl had accepted bride price from a family without her consent, she was under 18 years of age and this also meant an end to her education.

The girl got to know about the arrangement through her grandfather who disagreed with the father on the issue of marrying of her daughter.

PROBLEMThere are so many young girls like this

Masai girl who are married off by their parents at an early age. This is a clear violation of the rights of an individual.

Premature marriages deny young girls from completing their education and violates the rights, causes early pregnancies and unwanted babies.

In brief, children end up having children at an early age when they are not prepared to be mothers.

STEPS TAKEN TO COUNTER THIS PROBLEM Creating awareness about the evil of the device, by

educating the elders and other members of the community.

Make sure that girls access education Creating a desk at the police station where these cases

can be reported easily. Mobilizing members of the community to resist such

acts. Creating awareness among young girls about their rights,

not to be forced into marriage. Insist on laws in place that can retard parents from doing

so by criminalizing Alleviate poverty through improved livelihoods. Exercising AB principles, abstaining from sex until

marriage

EXPECTED RESULTS Stopping early marriages by the

parents/ guardian. General awareness with the members of

the community about the dangers of early marriages.

Retaining the girls in schools until the completion of the year studies.

More incomes in the households. Marriages to take place at the right time

by the girl exercising their choice.
