English Language Arts & Reading

• Reader and Writer Workshop• YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR OWN LEARNING

-Choose books to read in and outside of class-Apply reading strategies learning in class to

your own choice reading pieces• Constant reading of choice books outside of class

6th Grade Math

• By the end of fifth grade students will have a very solid working knowledge of all four “operations”—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—along with fractions, simple percentages, decimals, and basic graphing.

• SIXTH GRADE TOPICS:– Number Sense– Geometry (ex. Angles)– Statistics (ex. Coin tossing)– Reasoning Skills

• Sixth grade “World Cultures and Geography” is all about exploring the people and places all around our amazing world.

• A bus tour of Mexico City, a journey through the Amazon Rainforest, a train trip across Europe, and a visit to different places across Africa are just a few of the “trips” you’ll take.

• Reading, writing, maps, pictures, and videos are just a few of the tools you’ll use to travel and learn!

You will utilize technology.You will be ACTIVELY learning.

6th Grade Art

• We studied many different kinds of Art this semester including drawing, painting, watercolor, collage, murals, and more!

• Many of our students won awards at the UIL Competition including 1st, 2nd, 3th , place Drawing, 1st and 2nd place Misc, and 3 awards in the Painting category

ACE Afterschool Orientation

What is ACE?• ACE is an acronym that stands for Afterschool

Centers on Education• Also called 21st Century• Federally funded grant (free money with stipulations)

given to Del Valle ISD• 5 year grant, we’re in the Fourth year• 7 elementary schools• 2 middle schools and high school• Serve 1,950 students

What does ACE do?

• Provides free afterschool and summer camp programming for students K-12th grade

• 4 Activity Components– Academic Support– Enrichment Activities– College and Workforce Readiness– Family and Parental Involvement

Student Expectations

• Come everyday you are supposed to attend• Be respectful• Follow directions• Give parents important information• Have a good attitude• Have Fun!

During the School Year

• All students will receive a snack afterschool– Each student must take the first snack– Second optional snack at 5:30 PM

• All students have 45 minutes of structured homework help time– Students can work on homework, read, or play an academic

game– If students say they do not have homework, the instructor

checks their binder– If they are finished or do not have homework, they are

expected to read their library book

ACE differences at Middle School

• Everyone can come to ACE, no wait list to join – except for some classes (i.e. dance, cooking)

• More choice:– Not mandatory to come 4 days/week – some students

come 1 day/week, others come up to 4 days/week– Students get to chose which classes they take each

semester
