Important Items for the Beginning of the School Year
Preparations for 2014-15
Just because the calendar says the start of school is here does not mean that sum-
mer was wasted for the Oldham-Ramona staff and students. Oldham-Ramona stu-
dents and teachers alike spent the summer preparing to maximize the potential
learning and success for the next school year. Many of our Raider athletes took
part in camps and evening weight training to hone their performance on the court, on
the field and running courses.
Several of our teachers took part in the South Dakota teacher training to build
skills for writing Student Learning Objectives (SLO’s) and the related assessments
to maximize student learning. Also, some of our teachers took summer workshops
and college courses to perfect their skills and make their classes more engaging.
Attendance:
School has started and we are off to a smooth start. The students are getting use
to the school routine and the changes that have occurred here at Oldham-Ramona,
especially the new staff. I like to start out the school year with a reminder to par-
ents about your student’s attendance. I will give you another reminder about at-
tendance in January, because school attendance is so vital to school and academic
success. South Dakota law now required all students to attend school until they are
18. Regular attendance at school is extremely important to academic success. The
two most important things that impedes a students learning is being absent from
school too much and being late to school or classes. Being 10 minutes late to school
every day adds up to 30 hours of instruction missed in a year. Parents have tremen-
dous influence on their student’s attendance.
Breakfast and Lunch:
The school offers both breakfast and lunch for reasonable prices. A reminder to
parents to please make sure that you keep a positive balance in your child’s break-
fast/lunch account for the school year.
Free & Reduced Meal Application
If you think that your family would qualify for “free or reduced” meals, please com-
plete the free and reduced application as soon as possible. There are income guide-
lines for this program that would qualify families to get either free or reduced
meals.
Asbestos Notice
In 1987, the U.S. Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act.
Asbestos is a fiber, which in the past had been used in building construction materi-
als, and has been identified as being a disease-causing agent, including a cause of
cancer. The purpose of the legislation was to insure that school students and pa-
trons are provided with a safe environment in which to learn. The school is required
to notify patrons that we do have some asbestos-containing materials. The only as-
bestos-containing materials that remain in the district are the asbestos vinyl floor
tiles located in some of the district’s buildings. The district staff or contractors

In order to stay within the state guidelines, breakfast can be either cereal and toast or the entrée of the day. It cannot be both and stay within
the caloric guidelines the children should adhere to. Either choice does include the fruit and milk.

O-R AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
WELCOMES NEW COORDINATOR
DANYA JOHNSON
Danya Johnson is thrilled to be the Oldham-Ramona After-School Program Coordinator! She is excited for the opportunity to provide a fun, safe, and edu-
cational place for our children this school year!
Currently, Danya is a senior at Dakota State University working on a degree in Elementary Education with minors in technology and reading. She is originally from Baltic, SD, where she grew up on a farm raising cattle and crops. In her spare time, Danya enjoys playing sports and running, baking, reading, and
spending time with her friends and family.
There will be a “Meet and Greet” open house for parents and children on Thursday, September 4th from 3:30 to 6pm. This will be opportunity to get to know each other better, and give you a better sense of her goals and expecta-
tions for the year.
Danya is excited to get to know each of you as the school year progresses, and is ready to work to make ASP a better program
for everyone! She looks forward to meeting you at the open house.
