Geschichte History
he origins of the Oktoberfest festival start with the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later to become King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 17, 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front
of the city gates to celebrate the royal event. The fields were named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's meadow") in honour of the Crown Princess, and have kept that name ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the name simply to “Wiesn” which is also the title locals use for Oktoberfest (die Wiesn). Horse races in the presence of the Royal Family marked the close of the event that was celebrated as a festival for the whole of Bavaria. These horse races were repeated in the subsequent years and gave rise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest.
In 1811, an added feature to the horse races was the first Agricultural Show, designed to boost Bavarian agriculture. The horse races, which were the oldest and at one time the most popular event of the festival, are no longer held today. But the Agricultural Show is still held every three years during the Oktoberfest on the southern part of the festival grounds. In 1818 small beer stands were introduced which grew rapidly in number. In 1896 the beer stands were replaced by the first beer tents.

TULIPS FROM AMSTERDAM
When it’s spring again, I’ll bring again, tulips from Amsterdam
With a heat that’s true, I’ll give to you, tulips from Amsterdam
I can’t wait until the day you fill these eager arms of mine, Like a windmill keeps on turning, that’s how my heart
keeps on yearning, For the day I know I can, bring you tulips from
Amsterdam.

OB LA DI, OB LA DA
Desmond has a barrow in the market place; Molly is a singer in the band.
Desmond says to Molly "Girl I like your face", and MoIly says this as she takes him by the hand.
Ob la di, ob la da, life goes on, Bra la la how life goes on. Ob la di, ob la da, life goes on, Bra la la how life goes on.
Desmond takes a trolley to the jeweller's store, buys a
twenty carat golden ring. Takes it back to Molly waiting at the door and as he gives
it to her she begins to sing.
Happy ever after in the marketplace, Desmond lets the children lend a hand.
Molly stays at home and does her pretty face, and in the evening she still sings it with the band
ROLL OUT THE BARREL
Roll out the barrel, we’ll have a barrel of fun.
Roll out the barrel, we’ve got the blues on the run. Zing, Boom, Tararrel, Sing out a song of good cheer,
Now’s the time to roll the barrel, for the gang’s all here.

PACK UP YOUR TROUBLES
Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag, And smile, smile, smile,
While you’ve a Lucifer to light your fag, Smile boy that’s the style.
What’s the use of worrying? It never was worthwhile, so:
Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag, And smile, smile, smile, smile
YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, You make me happy when skies are grey,
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you, Please don’t take my sunshine away.
The other night dear, as I lay sleeping,
I dreamt I held you in my arms, When I awoke dear I was mistaken,
And I hung my head and cried.

IF YOU KNEW SUSIE
If you knew Susie like I know Susie, Oh, oh, oh what a girl,
There’s none so classy as this fair lassie, Oh, oh, Holy Moses what a chassis.
We went riding, she didn’t balk, Back from Yonkers,
I’m the one that had to walk, If you knew Susie, like I know Susie,
Oh, oh what a gal.
If you knew Susie like I know Susie, Oh, oh, oh, what a gal.
She wears long tresses and nice tight dresses, Oh, oh what a future she possesses.
We went riding, she didn’t balk, Back from Yonkers,
I’m the one that had to walk, If you knew Susie, like I know Susie,
Oh, oh what a gal.

CONSIDER YOURSELF
Consider yourself at home, consider yourself one of the family,
I've taken to you so strong, it's clear we’re going to get along
Consider yourself well in, consider yourself part of the furniture,
There isn't a lot to spare, who cares, what ever we've got we share.
There's a chance to be, we should see some harder days, Empty larder days, quite grouse,
Always a chance to meet somebody to foot the bill, Then the drinks are on the house.
Consider yourself our mate, we don't want to have much fuss,
After some consideration we can state, consider yourself one of us.

Bonnie was dead.

YELLOW SUBMARINE
In the town where I was born, lived a man who sailed to sea.
And he told us of his life, in the land of Submarines. So we sailed up to the sun, till we found the sea of green.
And we lived beneath the waves, in our Yellow Submarine.
We all live in a yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow
submarine, We all live in a yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow
submarine,
And our friends are all on board, many more of them, live next door, and the band begins to play.
As we live a life of ease, every one of us has all we need. Sky of blue, and sea of green, in our yellow submarine,

THE HAPPY WANDERER
I love to go a wandering, along the mountain track, And as I go, I love to sing, my knapsack on my back.
Val de ri, val de ra, val dee ri, val de ra ha ha ha… … …
Val de ri, val de ra, My knapsack on my back
I love to wander by the stream that dances in the sun, So joyously it calls to me, “come join my happy song.”
I wave my hat to all I meet, and they wave back to me,
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet, from every Greenwood tree.
Oh may I go a wandering, until the day I die,
Oh may I always laugh and sing, beneath God’s clear blue sky.

THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES
Those magnificent men in their flying machines
They go up tiddle-ee up up, they go down tiddle-ee down down They enchant all the ladies and steal all the scene
With their up tiddle-ee up up and their down tiddle-ee down down
UP…..DOWN…..flying around, looping the loop and defying
the ground They’re all frightfully keen: those magnificent men in their
flying machines.
They can fly upside down with their feet in the air They don't think of danger, they don't even care
Newton would think he had made a mistake To see those young men and the chances they take.

AUNTIE ALICE
In a little church on the village green, I vowed my life away,
Followed by a little gathering, for those who wished to stay.
Everyone who came bought us something good, to build our happy home.
But a certain something caught my eye; it stood out on its own.
Auntie Alice bought us this; Auntie Alice bought us this,
Not too late, not too soon, Press it in the middle it'll play a tune.
Auntie Alice bought us this, Auntie Alice bought us this, We got a clock from Uncle Wilberforce,
But Auntie Alice bought us this.
When the vicar stood up for his speech, There was not an eye on him
Everyone was waiting anxiously, for Auntie to come in. And my pretty wife, who was full of strife,
She said it wasn't fair, That our wedding day was runner-up,
To that thing over there.

Drink, Drink, Drink, to eyes that are bright As stars when they’re shining on me.
Drink, Drink, Drink, to lips that are red And sweet as the fruit on the tree.
Here’s a hope that those bright eyes will shine, Lovingly, lovingly, soon into mine.
May those lips that are red and sweet, Tonight with joy my own lips meet,
Drink, Drink, Drink, let the toast start! May your hearts never part
Drink, Drink, Drink, let every true lover Salute his sweetheart
Drink, Drink, Drink, to arms that are white
And warm as a rose in the sun. Drink, Drink, Drink, to hearts that will love one,
Only when I am the one. Here’s a hope that those soft arms will twine,
Tenderly, trustingly, soon around mine. May she give me a priceless boon,

May young hearts never part? Drink, Drink, Drink, let every true lover salute his

Drifting through the wind Wanting to start again

Do you know that there's Still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you You just gotta

So I sat quietly, agreed politely I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

You hear my voice, your hear that sound Like thunder, gonna shake your ground
You held me down, but I got up Get ready 'cause I've had enough
I see it all, I see it now
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am the champion, and you're gonna hear me roar Louder, louder than a lion

It seems now that it's over but there is nothing I can do
I don't know oh oh oh why does love do this to me I don't know I don't know

It seems I'm thinking of you but I'm still thinking about myself

I SAW HER STANDING THERE
Well she was just seventeen And you know what I mean
And the way she looked Was way beyond compare
So how could I dance with another Ooo, when I saw her standing there?
Well she looked at me And I, I could see
That before too long I'd fall in love with her
She wouldn't dance with another Woo, when I saw her standing there
Well my heart went boom When I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine
Oh, we danced through the night And we held each other tight
And before too long I fell in love with her
Now I'll never dance with another Woo, since I saw her standing there
Well my heart went boom When I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine

DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’
Just a small town girl Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere Just a city boy
Born and raised in south Detroit He took the midnight train goin' anywhere
A singer in a smoky room A smell of wine and cheap perfume For a smile they can share the night It goes on and on, and on, and on
[Chorus] Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlights, people Living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the night
Working hard to get my fill Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends It goes on and on, and on, and on
Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown 47

Don't stop believin' Hold on to the feelin' Streetlights, people

PIANO MAN
It's nine o'clock on a Saturday, the regular crowd shuffles
in
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says, "Son, can you play me a memory I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete When I wore a younger man's clothes."
La la la, di da da La la, di da da da dum
Sing us a song, you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us feelin' alright
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke But there's someplace that he'd rather be He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me."
As the smile ran away from his face "Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"
Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown 49
Oh, la la la, di da da La la, di da da da dum
Now Paul is a real estate novelist Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the Navy And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness But it's better than drinkin' alone
Sing us a song you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody And you got us feeling alright
It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see To forget about life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"
Oh, la la la, di da da La la, di da da da dum
Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown 50

MAMMA MIA
I been cheated by you since I don't know when
So I made up my mind, it must come to an end
Look at me now, will I ever learn?
I don't know how but I suddenly lose control
There's a fire within my soul
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again
My my, just how much I've missed you?
Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, now I really know
Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown 51
My my, I could never let you go
I've been angry and sad about things that you do
I can't count all the times that I've told you we're through
And when you go, when you slam the door
I think you know that you won't be away too long
You know that I'm not that strong
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything
Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, even if I say
"Bye bye, leave me now or never"
Mamma mia, it's a game we play
"Bye bye" doesn't mean forever
Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, now I really know
My my, I could never let you go

SWEET CAROLINE
Where it began, I can't begin to knowing
But then I know it's growing strong
Was in the spring
And spring became the summer
Who'd have believed you'd come along
Hands, touching hands Reaching out, touching me, touching you
Sweet Caroline Good times never seemed so good
I'd be inclined To believe they never would
But now I
Look at the night and it don't seem so lonely We filled it up with only two
And when I hurt Hurting runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when I'm holding you
One, touching one Reaching out, touching me, touching you
Sweet Caroline Good times never seemed so good
I'd be inclined
Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown 53
To believe they never would Oh no, no
Sweet Caroline Good times never seemed so good
Sweet Caroline I believe they never could
Sweet Caroline Good times never seemed so good
THOSE WERE THE DAYS
Once upon a time there was a tavern Where we used to raise a glass of two
Remember how we laughed away the hours And dreamed of all the great things we would do?
Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown 54
Those were the days, my friend We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose
For we are young and sure to have our way La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Those were the days, Oh yes Those were the days.
Then the busy years went rushing by us We lost our starry notions on the way. If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Just tonight I stood before the tavern Nothing seemed the way it used to be In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely fellow really me?
Through the door there came a familiar laughter I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we're older but no wiser For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown 55
MY HEART WILL GO ON
Every night in my dreams I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you go on
Far across the distance And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on
Near, far, wherever you are I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
Love can touch us one time And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we're gone
Love was when I loved you One true time I hold to
In my life we'll always go on
Near, far, wherever you are I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown 56
You're here, there's nothing I fear And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way You are safe in my heart
And my heart will go on and on.
You're here, there's nothing I fear And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way You are safe in my heart
And my heart will go on and on.
WAGON WHEEL
Heading down south to the land of the pines I'm thumbing my way into North Caroline
Staring up the road and pray to God I see headlights I made it down the coast in seventeen hours Picking me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a-hopin' for Raleigh, I can see my baby tonight
So rock me momma like a wagon wheel Rock me momma any way you feel
Hey, momma rock me Rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown Oktoberfest: The Bavarian Showdown 57
Rock me momma like a south bound train Hey, momma rock me
I'm running from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old time string band My baby plays a guitar, I pick a banjo now
Oh, north country winters keep a-getting me down Lost my money playing poker so I had to leave town But I ain't turning back to living that old life no more
So rock me momma like a wagon wheel Rock me momma any way you feel
Hey, momma rock me Hey, rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Rock me momma like a south bound train Hey, momma rock me
Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke Caught a trucker out of Philly had a nice long toke But he's a heading west from the Cumberland gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee And I gotta get a move on before the sun
I hear my baby calling my name and I know that she's the only one
And if I die in Raleigh at least I will die free

HEY JUDE
Hey Jude, don't make it bad Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart Then you can start to make it better
Hey Jude, don't be afraid You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin Then you begin to make it better
And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool By making his world a little colder
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
