AIESEC EAST AFRICA
The idea of this cooperation was hatched during the Pioneers 2011, conference in
Uganda during the month of November. This year, each country has a target of realiz-
ing 100 exchanges to other East African countries. This booklet aims to shed more
light on the opportunities available in East African Countries for AIESEC KENYA EP’S.
East Africa or Eastern Africa is the
easterly region of the African continent
.Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda
comprise the African Great Lakes re-
gion and are members of the East Afri-
can Community ( EAC ) . Rwanda is
sometimes considered part of Central
Africa .
Ethiopia is one of the Horn of Africa
countries. The geography of East Af-
rica is often stunning and scenic.
Shaped by global plate tectonic forces
that have created the East African Rift,
East Africa is the site of Mount Kili-
manjaro and Mount Kenya, the two
tallest peaks in Africa. It also includes
the world's second largest freshwater
lake Lake Victoria, and the world's sec-
ond deepest lake Lake Tanganyika.

INTRODUCTION TO EAST AFRICA
oGCDP program
How do we run this programme?
We provide international volunteer ex-
periences through which young people
develop themselves while empowering
individuals, communities or organiza-
tions. We focus on areas and issues with
the need for direct social impact and sus-
tainable solutions.
What can a young person gain through this
programme?
With this programme, a young person gains access to AI-
ESEC’s value-based platform, and he or she
experiences:
A cross-cultural living and working experience
The opportunity to create positive societal impact
Personal development
GCDP participants can have different types of volunteer
experiences. They may work with organizations or in pro-
jects which focus on community
development, as long as their experience contributes to
their personal development and positive impact on soci-
ety.
Duration of a GCDP
experience:
6-78 weeks
How will this be measured on the system?
A GCDP experience is counted as soon as an EP is realized to a GCDP experience, which should be
on their first day at work. An individual is counted as a GCDP participant as soon as his or her GCDP
form has been raised.
Global Community Development programme(GCDP): International internships are the most intense learning ex-perience we offer and link together our global network. This programme encompasses cross-cultural positive im-pact through working abroad for social and community development projects that lead to self development and skill enhancement for the member undertaking the
programme.
A Global Community Development Programme
(GCDP) experience is an opportunity for young people
to develop entrepreneurial and responsible leadership
by creating direct positive impact through an interna-
tional volunteer experience.
Issues the EP opportunities mostly cover include: Social
Work, Project Management, Training and Development &
Counselling and Guidance.

Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi,

Kiswahili and English are the Official languages, how-ever the former is the national language. While Kiswahili is the medium of instructions at primary school level; English is medium at Higher educational levels.
Kiswahili, the national language, excites a listener in
terms of the way some people from the different eth-
nic other members from other tribes speak slowly and
carefully.

AIESEC in Tanzania.
AIESEC was introduced for the first time in Tanzania in the year 1998 by the three students who were sent to Kenya by
Prof Rutashobya to learn about AIESEC and its activities. Tanzania became an extension MC from Kenya in the year
2005 and gained its full membership in the year 2007 during IPM in Egypt. The first LC was the LC University of Dar es
salaam. AIESEC Tanzania has been growing into having four officials LCs now ( SAUT, MZUMBE, UDSM, IFM ) and
two extensions LCs ( MOCCOBS and Tumaini ) . The growth of AIESEC Tanzania has also been on the measures of
success. Talking about today, 2011, AIESEC Tanzania is doing so good in providing the best international experience
through international internships and the number of impact to the society through PBOXes is going higher and higher
every day. With a total of 6 partners that the MC has, Conferences and events, Projects and all other costs and ex-
penses are covered to the extent of making the Country sustainable.

Ethiopia
Ethiopia located in the Horn of Africa, and is the most populous landlocked country in the world. It is bordered by Eritrea to the
north, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Sudan and South Sudan to the west, and Kenya to the south. Ethiopia is the second-most
populous nation on the African continent, with over 84,320,000 inhabitants, and the tenth largest by area, occupying 1,100,000 km2.
The capital is Addis Ababa, known as "the political capital of Africa," as it is home to the headquarters of many international organi-
zations. The Ethiopian calendar is seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar. The majority of the population is Christian
while a third of it is Muslim, The country is also the spiritual homeland of the Rastafari movement. There are 9 UNESCO World
Heritage Sites in Ethiopia. English is the most widely spoken foreign language and is the medium of instruction in secondary
schools. One Ethiopian year consists of twelve months, each lasting thirty days,
plus a thirteenth month of five or six days (hence the "Thirteen Months of Sunshine" tourism slogan).
In Ethiopia, the 12-hour clock cycles do not begin at midnight and noon, but instead are offset six hours.
Thus, Ethiopians refer to midnight (or noon) as 6 o'clock.

first language may be. The language is written in the Ge'ez script. It is a country with more than 80 different ethnic groups each with

Rwanda
Rwanda is bordered by Uganda, Tanza-
nia, Burundi, and the Democratic Re-
public of the Congo. The population is
young and predominantly rural, with a
density among the highest in Africa.
Rwandans form three groups: the Hutu,
Tutsi, and Twa. Christianity is the larg-
est religion in the country, and the prin-
cipal language is Kinyarwanda, which
is spoken by most Rwandans. Coffee
and tea are the major cash crops for
export. Tourism is a fast-growing sec-
tor and is now the country's leading
foreign exchange earner; Rwanda is
one of only two countries in which
mountain gorillas can be visited safely,
and visitors are prepared to pay high
prices for gorilla tracking permits. Mu-
sic and dance are an integral part of
Rwandan culture, particularly drums
and the highly choreographed intore
dance. Traditional arts and crafts are
produced throughout the country, in-
cluding imigongo, a unique cow dung
art. The currency in Rwanda is the
Rwandan Franc (FRw.). This currency
is the second strongest in the East Af-
rica region. Recently, 1 USD equals
between FRw. 600 and FRw. 630 . In
the local language (Kinyarwanda) it is
referred to as Amafaranga.In addition
to the indigenous language of Kinyar-
wanda, French and English are official
languages. French is widely spoken
throughout the country. In the capital
and other tourist centers, many people
speak English.

Every GCDP experience we deliver is our opportunity to
change the world. To inspire someone to do someh ng they wouldn't do before, to make a mark on the world.
The purpose is defeated if every EP hates AIESEC, the recieving Country/Territory,the world after an AIESEC
GCDP experience.
Quality is about delivering our promise.
Providing to the EP what was written in the TN
form.

Remember the primary aim of the AIESEC Exchange programme is to de-
velop individuals who bring about positive change in the Society.
This are the 4 core things GCDP Projects should be driving in
the AIESEC network.
CONCLUSION
If we are in the business of changing lives, of giving people un-
forgetable experiences and making them see the world in a dif-ferent way, then our greatest sales tool is the stories of
those same people.
We need to strive cap-ture every story of
every intern, NGO,
community or indi-
viduals our pro-
grammes is touch-ing.This needs to be a
conscious activity of every VP OGX.
