INDIVIDUAL RECORDS10
Individual RecordsOfficial national statistics for all nonmajor four-year colleges began in 1946 with a limited post-season survey. In 1948, the service was expand-ed to include weekly individual and team statis-tics rankings in all categories except intercep-tions, field goals, punt returns and kickoff returns;these categories were added to official individ-ual rankings and records in 1970. In 1992, sta-tistics compilations for individual all-purposeyards and team net punting, punt returns, kickoffreturns and turnover margin were begun. In2000, defensive team and individual statisticswere added. From 1946, individual rankings were by totals.Beginning in 1970, most season individual rank-ings were by per-game averages. In totaloffense, receiving yards, all-purpose yards, rush-ing and scoring, yards or points per game deter-mine rankings; in receiving and interceptions, catches per game; in punt and kickoff returns, yards per return; and in field goals, numbermade per game. Punting always has been byaverage, and all team rankings have been pergame.Beginning in 1979, passers were ranked in alldivisions on efficiency rating points, and teampass defense rankings changed to the same rat-ing system in 1990 (see page 6 for explana-tion).Before 1967, rankings and records included allfour-year colleges that reported their statistics tothe NCAA. Beginning with the 1967 season, rankings and records included only members ofthe NCAA.In 1973, College Division teams were dividedinto Division II and Division III under a three-divi-sion reorganization plan adopted by the specialNCAA Convention on August 1, 1973. Careerrecords of players include only those years inwhich they competed in Division II.Before 2002, postseason games were notincluded in NCAA final football statistics orrecords. Beginning with the 2002 season, allpostseason games were included in NCAA finalfootball statistics and records.Collegiate records for all NCAA divisions canbe determined by comparing records for all fourdivisions. Before 2002, all individual and team statisticsrankings include regular-season games only.A player whose career includes statistics forparts of five seasons (or an active player whowill play in five seasons) because he was grant-ed an additional season of competition for rea-sons of hardship or a freshman redshirt, is denot-ed by “$.”NCAA DEFENSIVE FOOTBALL STATISTICSCOMPILATION POLICIESAll individual defensive statistics reported to theNCAA must be compiled by the press box sta-tistics crew during the game. Defensive numberscompiled by the coaching staff or other universi-ty/college personnel using game film will not beconsidered “official” NCAA statistics. This policy does not preclude a conference orinstitution from making after-the-game changesto press box numbers. This is consistent withexisting NCAA policies involving corrections toany offensive statistics after a contest. Anychanges to press box numbers must be obvious
errors, such as misidentified players, and thisshould not be interpreted as a way for press boxstatistics to be later “updated” by the coachingfilms. Changes should be made within oneweek after the game is played. Statisticians alsoare reminded that NCAA policy does not permitchanges to away-game statistics unlessapproved by the home sports information direc-tor.It is important to note that this policy appliesONLY to official NCAA statistics and nationalrankings, and does not mean a coaching staffcannot compile separate defensive statistics forinstitutional use. Those compilations also couldappear in the institution’s press releases and/orWeb site, as long as they are identified ascoaching film numbers rather than official statis-tics as used by the NCAA.The NCAA statistics staff reserves the right toreview any statistics provided to the nationaloffice and may withhold publishing/postingthose numbers until the accuracy of those statis-tics can be substantiated.
