MaNCaVERobs’‘Manland’

Followingonfromlastmonth’sinauguralManCaveentryfromDimitri,herearepicturesofmyownmessmywifesarcasticallyreferstoasManLand….Wehaveanoldbungalowthathasbeenundergoingrenovationsforthelast3-4yearssomymodellingspaceislimitedtothediningroomtableandasmallsinglegarageinthebackyard.Despitehavinga4bedroomhouseandonlytwopersonsdwellingwithin,Istillhaven’tmanagedtoacquireamodellingroom–yetmywifehasaguestroomandadressingroom–gofigure!Thephotosherearearoundabout30%ofmycollection–manymorearestuffedintoboxesandstoredatmyfolksplace

whojusthappentohavealargedrybasementblessthem…. Itendtobuildnumerousmodelsatanyonetime–partlyduetothesetupofmyshed(explainedbelow)andpartlyduetomylowboredomthreshold!Itrytobuildthingswithsimilarrequirements(likeallneedingthesameinteriorcolourorallneedingaglosswhitefinish,etc…).Myshedisoneoftheun-poweredvarietiessohasnolightsorpowerforallmyman-tools(i.e.airbrush-nottobeconfusedwithlady-toolssuchasahairbrush…).Somostofmyfettling,fiddling,gluinganddetailpaintingisdoneatthediningroomtableanddirty

taskslikesandingoverthelaundrysink.Ithenaccumulatetheaforementionedmodelswithsimilarrequirements,runapowerleadouttotheshed,andspendafewhoursairbrushing.Thebuildsthencontinueoverthenextfewdaysorweekswithmasking,etc,untilthenextairbrushsessionoutintheshed….UnlessIgetboredofcourseatwhichpointIstartsomethingnew!IhaveahabitofstartingstuffbecauseithappenstobethecolourpaintIhaveloadedintheairbrush–thenumberofSpitfiresI’vebuiltthatwaybecauseofthatweirdinteriorgreenshadeIcantellyou…

Idon’ttendtofocustoomuchonsuper-detailingmybuilds–nottoofussedaboutresinthisandphoto-etchthat–kitsarepriceyenoughwithoutaddingallthataswell.Havingsaidthat,ifthekitpartsareglaringlypoor,andanafter-marketpartisavailable,Imayuseit.I’mabitthesamewhenitcomestocoloursandbasicshapes–Itendtobuildforthepleasureoftheprocessratherthangethunguponbuildinganhistoricallyaccuraterepresentationoftherealthing…repeatafterme:it’sonlyahobby,it’sonlyahobby…. I’verecentlystartedbuildingmoreofmykitsfocussingonthestyleofpaintingoftencalled‘spanishschool’–can’tquitebringmyself

togoalloutonthemjustyetandstillresorttobasicslikewashesanddry-brushing,butIwouldsaymypreferredstyleistoover-accentuatethedetail.Iguessclose-uptheylookover-done,butonashelf6feetawaytheylookjustright…Andasfordisplayingmymodels,alas,havinglostclaimsonanyofthegoodroomsinthehouse,allmymodelsgointoboxesoncompletionandshovedinawardrobeorshelfsomewhere.Ihaveplansfordisplaycabinetsbuthavetocompletepartsofthehouserenovationsfirst–masterbedroomandensuiteonthegoatthemoment,kitchennextyear….MaybeonedayI’llgetaroundtothatdisplaycabinet!! LocateddownsomeverynarrowlanesinaruralareaofDevon,51/2milesSouthEastofBarnstaple,thiscollectionisaMUSTVISITforanyAFVormilitaryfan.

Whatfirstbeganasasmallcollectionofmilitariabyoneman,PrestonIsaac,hasnowgrowntoarathereclecticcollectionofmilitariaandmilitaryvehicles,manyofwhichareuniquetothiscollection.

HousedinthreeRomneybuildings(likehugeNissinhuts!)thevehiclesanddisplaysarecrammedintowhatavailablespacethereis.Thiscanmakeitabitawkwardtophotograph(whichisfullyallowed)buttheavailablelightingisprettygood,

unlikesomeothermuseums!Manyofthevehiclesarerunners,andareoftenusedfordisplaypurposes,andseveralhavebeenusedinfilmorTVwork.

Thewallsandislesarelinedwithdisplaycasescontainingexamplesofpersonalweapons,equipmentandvariousmilitaryephemera,anddecommissionedweaponscanalsobepurchased!IhadcontemplatedgettingaBrengun,butthethoughtoftryingtogetitbacktoNZthroughcustomsputmerightofftheidea!

MybiggestdisappointmentwasthatIranoutofmemoryinmycamera,andhadtoshootuptoBarnstapletogetalargercard.WhenIreturned,aftertakingsomeoftheattachedpicturesshownhere,theblastedbatterywentflat!Damn….TheworstpartwaswhenIreturnedbacktoNZ,IfoundthattherewerenoneofthepicturesIhadtakenonthesmallercard,andthatincludedtheseveralhundredIhadtakenattheTankMuseumatBovingtonthedaybefore–Itriedallmethodsof

recoveryfromthecard,buttonoavail,thewholelothadgone,andonlythefirstsixphotosIhadtakenwhenatOldSaruminSalisburywerestillthere.%**###@@@@***.LookslikeIwillhavetodoareturnvisittobothonmynexttriptotheUK!

Highlyrecommendedforavisit,evenifyouarenotan‘armour’fan,butplanonafulldaythere,asthereisjustsomuchtotakein.

Thereisplentyofreasonablypricedaccommodationaroundthearea.IstayedinaoldchurchconvertedtoaB&B(TheTravellersRestOldChurch)justuptheroad.

Wethoughtwe’ddoaquickrunthroughatypicalBroncokittohighlightsomeofthegreatfeaturesofthis‘NewtoourMarket’brand.

We’refeaturingBroncomodelskitCB35038:TheGerman5t‘DIANA’HalfTrackasthisprovidesanexcellentexampleofBroncos’productionstandards.

TheDianaitselfwasahastyamalgamationofthe(captured)Russian7.62mmATKGunmountedontotheGermanSd.Kfz.6chassistoformahastymobilegunplatform.Addonsomesteelplatesidesandyou’vegotanimprovisedtankdestroyer(ofsorts).Agooduseofrecycledwartrophiesbutnotthatsuccessfulasaweaponsplatform.

Fromamodelingpointofviewhoweveritisavisuallystrikingvehiclewithitsangularrearendandexposedgunbay,andofcourseitsverydifferentfromtheregularAFRIKAKORPSfareofPanzer2,3,&4sand88mmFlak36’s.Asmodelerswetendtoliketheunusualasmuchasthewellknown.

Firstoff,theDiana’sstrikingboxartiseyecatchingandshowsagoodexampleofthevehicleinservice

inNorthAfrica.ThequalityartworkalsoextendsinsidetheboxwithwhataresomeofthebestinstructionsI’veeverseen.

PrintedonhighgradepaperandpreparedasanA4sizebookletinfullcolour,theystartwithafullpaintingguidecrossreferencedtoGunze,HumbrolandTamiyapaints.Thisisfollwedbyadetailedpartsbreakdownshowingallsprues,decalsandPEincludedinthekit.Thebuilddrawingsthemselvesarespaciousandwelllaidout(takenoteDragon)andhaveanalmostTamiyaesquefeeltothem.Aniceextratouchisthathighlightpointsarepresentedincolourswhichmakesthemreallystandout.

Buildingthismodelisinfactlikebuilding2kits.Firstyoudothevehiclethenthegun,then,youbringbothtogether.Thekitprovidessome

Theplasticpartscountisprettyhighinthiskit,with14sprues,2individualparts,aPEsheetandadecalsheetsupplyingallthekitcontents.

TheTamiyaversionoftheP-51Disprobablythedefinitiveofferingavailableinthisscale.LikeallofTamiya’sofferingsithasbeendealtwithinanalmostclinicalmannerasregardspresentation,withgoodvisualoutlineaccuracyandeasyassembly.

TheRNZAFconnectionwiththeMustangstartedwiththedeliveryofthirtyexamplesinAugust1945–thefirstbatchof370orderedtoreplacetheVoughtCorsairstheninsquadronservice.ThesearrivedbyseaatAucklandandwereimmediatelybargeddowntheWaitematatoHobsonvilleintostorage.Theremainderoftheorderwascancelled

atthecessationofhostilitieswithJapan.

Inlate1951,early1952theywerebroughtfromstorageandrefurbished,tobeusedbythefourTerritorialAirForceSquadrons–Auckland,Wellington,CanterburyandOtago.Eachsquadronreceivingfiveexamples.

Thusbeganthehalcyondaysinthisscribes’memory,anerawhichceasedinearly1956whentheMustangwastakenoutofAirForceservice.Myfirstencounterasateenagerwithalivemachinewasprobablyearlyin1952ataWhenuapaiOpenDay.Whilstperchednearthetopof

theNo.1HangarjustpriortobeingremovedbySecurity,aloneexampleputonanimpressivehandlingdisplay.Iwasforeverhooked.

ForthenextfouryearsfineweekendswereeagerlylookedforwardtoandanticipatingseeingandhearingthesightandsoundofTAFMustangsexercisingabovetheAucklandIsthmus,wanglingridesontheJohnsonsAirportBustoWhenuapaiwhenaweekendexercisewasduetotakeplaceandbeingmesmorisedinmyMountainRoadclassroombythesoundofaloneMustangonNavalgunnerycooperationturningoverheadonitsrunstotheDevonportNavalBase severaldozentimes.Notmuch

Tomeatthattimetheseguyswereheroes,severalofwhomIlaterworkedwithinourNationalAirline.

FormyminiatureversionoftheP-51whichwasmysecondeffortafterdisposingofthefirsttoafamilymember,Ichoseamachine(NZ2425)ofNo.1TAFSQDN.ThisparticularaircraftwaspostedasmissingonaflightNorthofAucklandinMarch1955.ThemarkingsarecontainedonaVenturaDecalssheetV4883.

OnthefirstmodelbuiltIthoughtthatthedihedralangleofthecompletedmodelwasalittleflatsoIincreaseditslightlyonthesecondexample.

ThesilverfinishisDulonAluminiumAutoAcrylicoveraDucoundercoat.Ihavehadthisparticularpaintneartotwentyyearsanditfeaturesaveryfinepigment.Iamnotsosureitismatchedbyitsmodernequivalent.IelectedtouseaFalconVacformreplacementcanopyfixedintheopenposition.IwasunabletoaffixthewindscreenportionattheangleIthoughtnecessaryandhaveallthe

edgesalignadequately.Maybejustindividualtothisparticularmodel.AnUltracast(Canada)resincufflesspropellerwassubstitutedforthekitexampleaswasthepilotseat.

OverallIdoubtwhetherabetterrepresentationoftheMustangisavailableinthisscale.ThekittotrackdownifanRNZAFversionisbeingbuilt,istheKoreanWarexample,asthiscontainstheclosestkitrepresentationofthecufflesspropellerrequired.

Ilikeitwhenspecialmarkingsareappliedtotransportaircraftastheyotherwisesooftenweardrabrunofthemillpaintschemes.Thereviewdecalsrepresentananniversaryschemefirstwornin2008byanAn-26oftheCzechAirForce;theschemecelebrates90yearsofflyingfromthePrague-LbelyAirBase.ThesameaircrafthadmarkingsonenginesaddedtothisschemewhenitattendedanairshowatWaddingtonintheUKduringJuly2009.Thedecalsetincludestheseextraenginemarkingsasanoption.Thedecalscomepackagedinaclose-fittingandsealedcellophanebag.Thisishardtocutopenbecauseitssealededgesaresoclosetothecontents,andonceopenedthereistheriskthatthedecalswillfallout.

WhateverKoprosavesincostoverthemoretypicalzip-lockpolythenebagsusedfordecalsisnotworthitinmyview.Ifindthatthecellophanekindannoyingtouse.

InsidethebagisasingleA-4pagepaintandmarkingsguideandthedecalsheet.Printedincolour,theinstructionshaveathree-viewplacementguidethatisclearandeasytofollow.ThePaintcoloursareinEnglishandCzech;andtheyarecross-referencedtoHumbrol,AgamaandFS.595.

Thedecalshavegoodregistrationandcolourdensitylooksgoodtoo.ItcouldhavebeenhelpfultoincludetheredandblueportionsofthebackgroundtothestarboardengineNATOmotif,butitdoesnotmattermuchthatoneisnotprovided.

Conclusion

Thesearegoodqualitydecalswithsimpleandclearinstructions.Ithinkthatthechoiceofschemeisaninterestingandattractiveone(InowwishthatIhadnotdisposedofmyAModelAn-26kit!).Theuseoftight-fittingcellophanebagsmayhelpreducecost,butIregardthemtobefrustratingtouse.IhopethatKoproconsiderschangingtothezip-lockpolythenebagsthatmostdecalmakersuse.Despitethis,Irecommendthesedecals.
