AUDUBON ADVENTURES

It’s Audubon Adventures time again. It’s time to signas a sponsor of this exciting program designedNational Audubon to teach 4th and 5th graders about tnatural world. This year's Audubon Adventures kit is t“Feats of Nature”. Through the four new exciting tothis year you will explore amazing topics on the natabilities of our world’s plants and animals. Learn hanimals defend themselves, migrate, build and h

plants rule the earth! It is presented with fun activand high interest articles. Science is an FCcomponent this year in the public schools. Adventures kit is gladly received by local teachers tryto increase their students' information level!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I want to thank Gloria Winans and Lynn Bowen for agreeing totake on the publicity chair duties along with being co-secretaries.

Karyn Hoffman is applying for grant money to get started withthe gopher tortoise rehab project. I am happy to report that Dr.Erin Holder, DVM, of FloridaWild Veterinary Hospital plans tohelp with the tortoise rehabilitation. Her efforts to rescue wildlife

are very much appreciated.

Recently, I met with other members of the Blue Spring WorkingGroup at the Historic Courthouse in DeLand for our quarterlymeeting. Coordination of this working group is funded by a StateWildlife Grant through Florida’s Wildlife Legacy Initiative of theFlorida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, withmatching contributions provided by the Springs Initiative of theFlorida Department of Environmental Protection. We reviewed amap of the Blue Spring basin which includes Orange City, mostof Deltona and much of DeLand. All of the rainwater that falls inthis basin directly affects the spring.

Blue Spring, one of Florida’s “first-magnitude” springs, is not asclean as it was 30 years ago. Pollutants are being carried by therain through the earth and down to the aquifer. We are exploringways to improve the spring’s health. It is the winter home tomore than 260 manatees.

West Volusia Audubon collected about 150 signatures opposingthe pumping of surface water from the St. John’s River and I havesent that in to the River-keeper. I will try to keep you updated onwhat is happening on that front.

You don’t want to miss our October meeting and make sure you bring a friend or two.

It’s more important than ever to sponsor a classThe teachers have very limited money to spenon their classes this year. With the curreneconomic situation, teachers have less personamoney and less county money for their rooms.

As we write, Lake Woodruff NWR and HontooIsland State park are closed because of the higwater level of the St. John River.

BICENTENNIAL YOUTH PARK Louise Chapman, Environmental Teacher, needs suppliesfor the Bi-Centennial Youth Park. Her budget has been cut by this year’s loss of tax dollars throughout the county. TheBoard of WVAS voted to fund $250.00 for supplies at our last meeting.

If you have any of the supplies below that you don’t need,  please bring them to the next meeting. With the largenumber of students visiting the park, these supplies will begreatly appreciated. You may continue to bring items tofuture meetings. All will be delivered to Mrs. Chapman.

MIGRATING BIRDS

The best thing you can do for migrating birds and forour non-migrating birds is to provide a safe place forthem to eat and drink. Bird baths are greatlyappreciated by birds when rains become scarce. Makesure that the base of your bird bath doesn't give catsan opportunity to hide and pounce on unsuspectingbirds and place your birdfeeder close to cover so thatthe birds can hide from any swooping predators.
