COMPARE AND CONTRAST:
LAW OF CONSERVAYION OF ENERGY AND LAW OF
CONSERVATION OF MATTERThe law of conservation of energy states that energy is never created or
destroyed only converted.
This law is known by two different names:1. "The Law of Conservation of Energy"2. "The First Law of Thermodynamics"
Conservation of energy means that the total amount of energy in a closed system
remains constant. You can't create energy out of nothing, and you can't destroy it -
however, you can convert from one type of energy to another. This includes
converting useful energy to unusable energy - but the total amount of energy still
remains constant.
There is a quantity called energy that is conserved in a closed system. That is to
say, if no energy get into a system or gets out, the total amount of energy will
remain constant.
The law of conservation of mass indicates that mass cannot be creatednor destroyed.
This law is also known as:1.The Law of Conversionof Matter
This means the total mass of reactants in a chemical reaction will equal thetotal mass of the products. If a gas is produced during a reaction, which mass isoften forgotten when calculating the final mass because the students are unable tosee the gas. For this reason, balloons or zip lock bags may be used to collect thegas and preserve the mass.
The Conservation of Mass-Energy
There is a scientific law called the Law of Conservation of Mass,
discovered by Antoine Lavoisier in 1785. In its most compact form, it
states: matter is neither created nor destroyed.
In 1842, Julius Robert Mayer discovered the Law of Conservation of
Energy. In its most compact form, it it now called the First Law of
Thermodynamics: energy is neither created nor destroyed.
In 1907 (I think), Albert Einstein announced his discovery of the
equation E = mc2 and, as a consequence, the two laws above were merged
into the Law of Conservation of Mass-Energy: the total amount of mass
and energy in the universe is constant.

When a piece of copper metal is heated in air, it comes together with oxygen
in the air. Then if it is weighed, it is found to have a greater mass that the originalpiece of metal. If however the mass of the oxygen of the air that combines with the
metal is taken into consideration, it can be shown that the mass of the product is
within the limits of accuracy of any weighing instrument, equal to the sum of the
masses of the copper and oxygen that combine. This behavior of matter is in accord
with what is called the Law of Conservation of Matter: During an ordinary chemical
change, there is no detectable increase or decrease in the quantity of matter.
Conversion of one type of matter into another are always accompanied by the
conversion of one form of energy into another. Usually heat is leveled or absorbed, but sometimes the conversion involves light or electrical energy instead of, or in
addition to heat. Many transformations of energy, of course, do not involve chemical
changes. Electrical energy can be changed into either mechanical, light, heat or
potential energy without chemical changes. Mechanical energy is converted into
electrical energy in a generator. Potential and kinetic energy can be converted into
one another. Many other conversions are possible, but all of the energy involved in
any change always appears in some form after the change is completed.
The Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy cannot be created ordestroyed, but can change its form.
The total quantity of matter and energy available in the universe is a fixed amount
and never any more or less.
