•Was a philosophy, or way of thought.

•Humanist thought came from Classical writings.

• Humanists believe that the individual human is important. They think that people are capable of making great accomplishments in this world.

Humanities

• These subjects are called “Humanities” today

• Humanism stressed the

importance of classical subjects, such as history,

literature, philosophy,

grammar, public speaking, and art.

• Although humanist thinkers continued to stress the importance of leading a Christian life, they challenged people to think for themselves instead of look to the Church for every answer. •Many humanists were churchmen, most notably Pope Pius II. Much humanist effort went into improving the understanding and translations of Biblical and early Christian texts.

•Humanist thought sparked an explosion of creativity, learning, and discovery.

• Art began to focus on people instead of religion.
