OAK WOODLANDS
Envisioning relationships in an ecosystem
Oak Tree
Oak Woodland
Importance of Oak Woodland
Common ecosystem within the western US. Between 300 and 500 species of oaks
worldwide. 60 species of amphibians and reptiles, 100
species of mammals, 150 species of birds, rely on oaks.
Provides food (ex. Acorns). Provides shelter, nesting sites, and shade.
Scientists.. Divide particular ecosystem into sections. Observe and record what they find in each
section. Gather information. Draw conclusions about characteristics of
ecosystem.
YOUR TURNTo be a Scientist
Rules 3 Pictures for each group. Observe the Picture. Write down what you observe:
Different objects found. Describe functions of each object. Find relationships within picture.
Build Mural
Looking at Mural What relationships do you discover within the
oak woodland? Do you see anything else once the pictures
are gathered? Do you see any specific patterns?
Conclusion Many dependencies. Many processes help maintain the oak
ecosystem (ex. Water, light, temperature, and soil).
Many relationships among living things, processes and patterns that drive survival and evolution.
Many things affected when an Oak gets cut down.
