The41-mileOldCrotonAqueductwasthefirsttodeliveracleanandplentifulsupplyofwatertoNewYorkCity.TheHighBridge,completedin1848andhailedasanengineeringmasterpiece,carriedtheaqueductacrosstheHarlemRiveronlargestonearches.

WaterflowedthroughtheCrotonAqueduct,fillingreservoirswheretheGreatLawninCentralParkandtheNewYorkPublicLibraryonFifthAvenuenowstand.NewYorkersrejoicedin1862whenanotherreservoirwasbuiltinCentralParktosupporttheneedsofagrowingcity.
