I n the coming months, Forest
Heights residents will learn about
ways we can reduce sedimenta-
tion and improve water quality on our
own properties. Forest Heights is
the grateful beneficiary of an $18,000
DEQ/West Multnomah Soil and Water
District planning grant to determine
how to tackle stormwater runoff on
our developed steep slopes. Runoff
from deforested terrain, roofs and
pavement can significantly alter water
quality in our neighborhood streams
and Mill Pond.
Portland has an average of 37 inches
of rain a year. That creates billions
of gallons of storm water runoff that
washes over roofs, streets, parking
lots and other hard surfaces. The
storm water flows into street drains
that empty into rivers and streams. It
carries dirt, chemicals, metals and
other pollutants that can harm fish,
wildlife, and people.
Storm water isn't all bad. Clean storm
water helps plants grow, refreshes
groundwater supplies, and keeps
streams at levels and temperatures
that support healthy populations of
fish and wildlife.
The rain that falls in our neighborhood
ultimately flows into Mill Pond and
Cedar Mill Creek, which then drains
to the Tualatin River. What happens
upland in Forest Heights affects water
quality in the waterways and proper-
ties downstream.
Solutions that work require a water-
shed approach that looks not just at
waterways, but also the land and land
uses that send polluted runoff to rivers
and streams. Restoring our waterways
starts with a healthy watershed.
How You Can Help
• Preserve established trees in your
yard and neighborhood.
• Don't overuse fertilizers and
pesticides.
• Plant trees, shrubs and ground
covers that filter pollutants and
reduce storm water runoff.
• Use non-toxic alternatives to
home cleaning chemicals.
• Never dump used motor oil, paint
or household chemicals on the
ground or in a storm drain.
• Sweep driveways and patios
clean instead of hosing them into
the street.
• Drive less, use the Eco Shuttle,
public transportation, bike or walk.
• Scoop pet poop and put into
trash.
Look for additional methods to im-
prove water quality in our neighbor-
hood as Forest Heights/Go Green
Committee announces homeowner
training and planning activities to
tackle stormwater issues in Forest
Heights as part of West Multnomah's
DEQ grant award!

Did you know that there are nearly 10 miles of walking trails throughout
the Forest Heights community? These trails are maintained by the
homeowners association and while our maintenance staff does an ex-
cellent job of keeping the trails safe and clean, their daily maintenance
schedule does not afford them the time to walk the trail system each
day. This is where you come in.
If you walk the trails on a regular basis and notice any kind of mainte-
nance issue, be it a diseased tree, a fallen limb, overgrown shrubs or
debris on the trails or in the common areas, we need to hear from you.
To aid in the reporting of trail maintenance issues, we’ve created this
online trail maintenance report. Your reports will greatly assist our
crew in their ongoing efforts to keep our trails safe and enjoyable for all
who enjoy this wonderful feature of the community.
Thank you in advance for keeping an eye out for trail issues!

U pdate your contact information!
Billing statements will go out the
end of this month so if you have
new contact information or a different
billing address, we need to hear from you.
We have the ability to deliver our semi-
annual assessments electronically, so if
you are willing to elect this option, please
visit our website at www.fhhoa.com and
sign up on the home page. This helps us
tremendously with keeping our costs down
and goes a long way in our part to be
“green”. In addition, people who sign up
for electronic billing also receive courtesy
reminders via email and tend to avoid late
penalties. So far, we have 417 out of 1934
owners signed up to take advantage of
electronic notification. Each homeowner
who signs up for electronic notification
saves the association at least $5.00 per
year, not to mention reduces the incidence
of being late in paying the assessment(s).
Tract R is complete!
While it might have been a bit slow to
start, our Mill Pond Park Landscape
upgrade has been complete (see above
photo). By next summer, the area to the
east side of the pond should be full of eco-
lawn, meadowscaping, native filter strips,
trees, picnic areas, and new areas for
multipurpose recreation, including a lawn
amphitheater that will provide a new
venue for community activities. Thank you
to everyone who provided input and par-
ticipated in this process.
Other community projects
This year, we had a multitude of projects
in the mix. Some have been a bit slower
to complete than I would have liked, but
patience is a virtue. In the next few weeks,
I am assured that our copper signage will
be ready and installed. We can also look
forward to the crosswalk project being
complete as well. Your patience has been
greatly appreciated.
Lastly, Forest Heights will be celebrating
our 25th Anniversary next year. To help
commemorate this milestone, we are
producing a community wide cookbook
(see next page) full of recipes from Forest
Heights residents—past and present. As
you go about preparing for the upcoming
holidays, please send in you favorite reci-
pes for the cookbook!

The Forest Heights Homeowners Association will be
celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014 and is embarking
on a community-wide project to help celebrate this mile-
stone: a Forest Heights Community Cookbook.
We are looking for recipes from all Forest Heights
homeowners – past and present – for this one-of-a-kind
cookbook. It doesn’t matter if you just moved to Forest
Heights, if you’ve lived here for 20+ years, or are a
previous owner; we want to hear from you. And because
Forest Heights is such a culturally diverse community,
we are especially interested in recipes that represent the
cultures and culinary customs that make up our very
unique community.
Here are the types of recipes we’re looking for:
• Appetizers & Beverages
• Soup & Salad
• Vegetables & Side Dishes
• Main Dish
• Breads & Rolls
• Desserts
• Cookies & Candy
• This & That
The success of this project will depend on the number of
entries we receive, so we’re allowing up to five recipes
per household. It is our hope to have all entries come
from Forest Heights homeowners, our staff, and the
dedicated vendors who have helped make our Annual
International Festival such a huge success. Whether it’s
the casserole recipe that your grandmother used to
make, or the amazing pumpkin soup that you just made
last week, the cookbook can’t happen without your reci-
pes. Please join in on the fun and share your favorite
recipes today!
How to contribute
There are three ways you can send in your recipes:
• Typensave Online: Go to our partner site (see
instructions below) and enter your recipes
online. Easy and fast, this option shows you
what your recipe will look like when printed
• Email the Association: Email your recipes to
contactus@fhhoa.com
• Mail or fax your recipes to the association office:
2033 NW Miller Road, Portland, Oregon 97229
Fax: 503.297.9408
Please include the source of your recipe if you know
where you originally got it from (e.g. “from my great-
grandmother”). If there’s a story behind the recipe, feel
free to share that too.
We will be collecting recipes from November 2013
through May 2014, with an expected print date of early
summer 2014.
Questions? Send them to: contactus@fhhoa.com or call:

The sometimes crushing power
of myth, story, and memory is
explored in the brilliant debut of
Obreht, the youngest of the
New Yorker's 20-under-40.
Natalia Stefanovi, a doctor living
(and, in between suspensions,
practicing) in an unnamed
country that's a ringer for
Obreht's native Croatia, crosses
the border in search of answers
about the death of her beloved
grandfather, who raised her on
tales from the village he grew
up in, and where, following German bombardment in 1941,
a tiger escaped from the zoo in a nearby city and be-
friended a mysterious deaf-mute woman. The evolving
story of the tiger's wife, as the deaf-mute becomes known,
forms one of three strands that sustain the novel, the other
two being Natalia's efforts to care for orphans and a way-
ward family who, to lift a curse, are searching for the bones
of a long-dead relative; and several of her grandfather's
stories about Gavran Gailé, the deathless man, whose
appearances coincide with catastrophe and who may hold
the key to all the stories that ensnare Natalia. Obreht is
an expert at depicting history through aftermath, people
through the love they inspire, and place through the stories
that endure; the reflected world she creates is both immedi-
ately recognizable and a legend in its own right. Obreht is
talented far beyond her years, and her unsentimental faith
in language, dream, and memory is a pleasure.

Changes coming to the
FHHOA newsletter
The Forest Heights HOA will be making
some new and exciting changes to this
newsletter starting in January 2014.
Instead of a monthly newsletter, we will
be switching to a quarterly publication
that will include in-depth articles on issues
impacting the community, project and
committee updates, HOA financials and
compliance related information.
To ensure that our homeowners are receiving the most
up-to-date information from the HOA, we will continue to
send email communications on a bi-monthly (or as needed)
basis. These emails will be brief in nature and will cover the
latest news “at-a-glance”.
As always, the HOA’s website is your best source for all the
news, information and resources you need in order to be an
informed member of the Forest Heights community.
Phillip Sakash, Forest Heights resident and owner of
Eco Products Northwest, is sponsoring a winter clothing
drive in conjunction with the Vancouver Avenue Street
Ministries. Items needed include: clothing of all kinds,
coats, jackets, shoes, hats, scarves, gloves, socks and
blankets. Phillip and a local relief agency will be hand-
ing out clothing items and sack lunches in downtown
Portland throughout the winter months and would be
grateful for any clothing items you are able to donate.
Please contact Phillip directly to arrange donations.
He can be reached at: info@ecoproductsnw.com or by
phone at: 971-563-2978.
Items can also be dropped

HALLOWEEN HIGHLIGHTS
SOLVE Green Team Program is Working with Forest
Park Elementary Students to Improve Watershed Health
W est Multnomah Soil and
Water District (WMSWD)
has awarded $3000 to fund
SOLVE Green Team educational
activities in Forest Heights! SOLVE
Green Team Program is a year long
service-learning program engaging
K-12 science classes in high priority
stream and wetland enhancement
projects.
All Green Teams commit to steward-
ship activities at a SOLVE managed
restoration site for the duration of the
school year, participating in active
restoration while learning all about
watershed health. Schools adopt a
stream in their own community that
connects them to stream health in
their neighborhood. The intent of
Green Team is to prepare students
to be involved in these activities
throughout their lives, as careers
and/or as volunteers.
Forest Park Elementary Green
Team is formally participating in
the program, and will be doing resto-
ration work along Miller Hollow trail.
Green Team students from Forest
Park have toured the site and will be
performing monthly service events
at the site during the school year.
In addition, Gilkey International
Middle school contacted SOLVE
with an interest in performing service
work. As a result, Gilkey students
worked at the Green Team site
during their service day in Octo-
ber. Blackberry was removed and
native trees were planted along the
trail and stream bank. Gilkey plans
to return one more day in March for
additional service work.
Forest Heights thanks SOLVE,
West Multnomah Soil and Water
Conservation Services District,
Forest Park and Gilkey students and
their parents for their great efforts!
Stay tuned for additional information
in this newsletter about how to tackle
erosion and water quality issues on

H ave you lived in Forest Heights for more than ten years? More than twenty? Been here from the start? If so, we
consider you a “Pioneer of Forest Heights” and we need your help preparing for our 25th anniversary. To help
preserve all that is unique about our community, we’re asking all our resident “pioneers” to consider sharing
your Forest Heights memories by participating in the Forest Heights History project.
The association is looking for old photographs, newspaper clippings, realtor spec sheets, maps and original housing
and marketing materials from the past 10 to 25 years. Nothing is too small to contribute and all items are welcome. We
are especially interested in hearing stories from our residents, past or present. Tell us what it was like to raise your
kids, or retire, in Forest Heights. What kinds of changes have you seen in
the neighborhood, how has the association changed over the years, what
projects have had the greatest impact on your property values?
All submissions to the history project will be on display in the HOA office
starting in the spring of 2014. To participate, please email Kim Monaco:
kmonaco@fhhoa.com to arrange an interview and/or to submit your
materials.
Thank you for helping the association celebrate our milestone anniversary!

Leek, Mushroom & Bacon Stuffing
1 24-ounce loaf sliced buttermilk bread, crust trimmed, bread cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 11 cups)
1 pound bacon slices, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
7 cups chopped leeks (white and pale green parts only)
1 1/2 pounds button mushrooms, coarsely chopped
12 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stemmed, caps coarsely chopped
4 cups coarsely chopped celery
3 tablespoons chopped fresh tarragon or 1 1/2 tablespoons dried
2 large eggs, beaten to blend
Canned low-salt chicken broth
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spread bread cubes on 2 rimmed baking sheets. Bake until bread is almost dry, about 15 minutes. Cool. Transfer to large bowl. Sauté bacon in large pot over medium-high heat until crisp, about 12 minutes. Transfer bacon to paper towels to drain. Reserve 6 tablespoons drippings in pot; discard any remaining drippings.
Add leeks and button mushrooms to same pot. Sauté over medium-high heat until beginning to soften, about 5 minutes.
Add shiitake mushrooms and saute 4 minutes. Add celery and sauté until leeks and mushrooms are tender but celery is
still slightly crisp, about 6 minutes longer. (Bread, bacon and sautéed vegetables can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover
separately. Store bread at room temperature; refrigerate bacon and vegetables.) Mix bacon, sautéed vegetables and
tarragon into bread. Season generously with salt and pepper. Mix eggs into stuffing. Preheat oven to 350°F. Generously
butter a 15 x 10 x 2-inch casserole dish. Add enough broth to stuffing to moisten (about 3/4 to 1 cup). Transfer stuffing to
prepared dish. Cover with buttered foil, buttered side down; bake until heated through, about 30 to 35 minutes. Uncover and
bake until top is slightly crisp and golden, about 20 to 25 minutes longer.
