According to the calendar (andthe weatherman) it’s officiallyfall. It’s a great time of yearto take advantage of all theHudson River Valley has to offerin terms of events and scenicbeauty. And one of my favoritehobbies – bargain shopping!Of course, you all know by
now about Thinking Local First. But are you putting your moneywhere Charlie’s mouth is?Thinking Local is about doingsome early holiday shopping;it’s about giving back to thoseless fortunate and contributingto organizations that are helpingpeople close to home; and it’sabout using your SmartCardto visit and get discounts fromfellow Chamber members’businesses, which certainlycomes in handy this time of year.
Now I know you all takeadvantage of your SmartCard, right? Each and every Chambermember and their employeesshould have one, and theyshould use it throughoutDutchess County when diningout, when going to a show, whengetting a gift for a loved one, andeven when using professionalservices. On the Chamber’swebsite under “Members” justgo to “Member Discounts” tosee the great offers which areavailable. And check back often, because these offers are alwaysbeing updated. If you don’t have a SmartCard,

Maybe when you started yourbusiness, getting a server to bethe backbone of your businessinfrastructure was just too farout of reach. So you createdan environment with a variety ofPCs doing the work of the onemachine you had to live without. Now, however, might be time torethink this method of keepingyour office up and running, asthere are many advantages toinvesting in a server.A server powered by husky
Intel processors can delivermore and cost you less, alongwith fewer headaches. Serverscan also offer a smaller businessa more clearly defined path tofuture growth. If you’ve been working with
a nest of PCs in your currentenvironment, you’re no strangerto the problems associatedwith managing all of thesemachines, the security risks thatyou sometimes face, and howcostly it can be if you run intoproblems.Servers usually offer you built-
in, automated features that stopsecurity breaches before theyget deeply embedded in yourinfrastructure. They also havecollaborative features that areeasy to use for those working inthe office as well as remotely.Managing a server over a
cluster of machines allows youto better monitor your workflowsfrom any location, manageyour storage needs, and can
even help you automate yourdata backup. Taking the timeto research and find the rightserver for your business shouldbe the first step for you to createa more efficient, productive andgrowth-oriented environment. You need to be able to service
the needs of your customers atany time, and having a serverwith all your applications orfiles that can be accessible tomultiple teams at the same timewithout delays is what will putyou ahead of your competition;so it’s an investment you cannotafford not to make.

Timothy Penfield remembersthe moment he decided toturn his life around. Serving alengthy prison sentence for, inhis words, “…just a lot of crime,”Penfield’s four children cameto visit him behind bars. Whenthey left, the Poughkeepsienative was overcome with theidea that he needed to be better,he had to do better for the sakeof his family.Timothy Penfield also
remembers the momentsomeone believed in him. Whileincarcerated, Penfield learnedtwo trades: metalworking andbarbering. However, with afelony conviction on his record, finding employment uponrelease was nearly impossible.Impossible until Norman Murleyof Apparatus Manufacturingstepped up. Murley gavePenfield a shot, and he’s neverlooked back. After losing his job at
Apparatus due to the recession,Penfield decided to applyhis work ethic and training toopening Sculpture Barber Shop(780 Main St., Poughkeepsie), a
sleek and modern space wherepeople can gather for not onlytheir latest haircut, but also,Penfield hopes, a chance to stayon the right path.Recognizing the mistakes
he’s made in his past, Penfield’smain goal is to give back to hiscommunity and help keep local
youth from repeating his errors.“Poughkeepsie is where I did mydirt, and this is where I need todo my clean-up,” he said. “It’sa lot worse out there than inmy day. It’s easy to make thewrong decision, but I’m trying toprevent that.”When Sculpture closes for
business, it opens for mentoring,a free program that Penfieldhas started for local youthages 16-18 to learn how to cuthair. Penfield also provides asympathetic ear, a safe spaceto complete homework andstay focused on school, andhopefully, a shot at a positivefuture.“It’s hard to balance, working
14 hours in the shop and thenanother three mentoring,”Penfield said, “But if I cankeep one kid from making themistakes I made, I’ll smile whenthey put me in the ground.”

As Thanksgiving approachesand visions of tables crowdedwith food dance throughthe heads of Hudson Valleyresidents, it’s important to keepin mind those that may befinancially incapable of providingfor their families this holidayseason.Due to the recent economic
downturn, more and morepeople are struggling to makeends meet, and that’s placinga strain on local food pantrieslike the one at the VineyardCommunity Church on Route 82in Hopewell Junction.Vineyard runs a “no-strings-
attached” operation that hashelped over 1,500 people inthe Hudson Valley, but they’re
finding it difficult to assisteveryone in need this season, and have seen their waiting listballoon to over 150.Vineyard’s food pantry is not
an emergency service. It hasthe resources to provide workingpoor families, often those thatare employed but can’t meet alltheir financial obligations, withfood for 5-7 days per month, which can allow them to pay rentor a doctor’s bill. But growingdemand and dwindling supplyhave begun to take their toll.Anyone wishing to make a
donation to Vineyard’s foodpantry can bring non-perishablefood items to drop off duringregular business hours, Tuesdaythrough Friday from 9 a.m. until
4 p.m.Monetary donations are
also accepted and often go along way, as the food pantryreceives significant discountswhen purchasing from area foodbanks.Furthermore, Vineyard is
always seeking local businessesor organizations willing to hold afood drive or a personal hygienedrive. The latter seeks itemslike toothpaste, toilet paper anddeodorant – things that foodstamps do not cover – and areespecially needed. For more information about
Vineyard Community Church’sfood pantry or to discuss asignificant donation, contactMichelle at 845-227-7832.

gas and electric giant’s “HowBrilliant Is That?” campaign tohelp the Hudson Valley lower
its energy costs and aid theenvironment at the same time.To date, over 1,000 such projectshave been completed with anaverage 25 percent decline inexpenses for proprietors. Onesuch installation at N & S Supplycost only $15,000 after CentralHudson covered 70 percent ofthe project price, which resultedin a $16,871 per year decreasein the shop’s electric bill.“The new lighting is brighter
and cleaner,” said WayneNussbickel, President and CEOof N & S in a statement. “The
difference is like day and night.”For more information on

A team is a group of peoplejoined together in a cooperativeactivity, working in a coordinatedeffort. We are part of numerousteams at any given point in ourlives via familial relationships, friendships, work environments, and volunteer and recreationalactivities. We’ve all heard, andprobably quoted, that there isno “I” in “Team”, yet the “I” eachteam member brings to the tableimpacts the capacity of the teamto attain its mission.Last month, the Leadership
Dutchess Class of 2012attended their first session:“Team Building” at Sharpe
Reservation. Chris Short, a2007 Leadership DutchessGraduate, author, speakerand skills-workshop facilitator, facilitated the workshop. Duringthe workshop, participantswere able to look at options forassessing their own style andthe styles of their teammates. Bythe end of the morning session, the class was ready to apply thetools that they had learned inpreparation for the afternoon’sactivity on the” low ropes”course.Sharpe features two separate
challenge courses containing avariety of low-ropes elements.
These elements are designedto encourage groups to worktogether as a team in a positiveand creative social environment. At the end of the low-ropessession, the class was able tofunction outside of their comfortzone, express their ideas andwork together as a team to findsolutions.Special thanks to EmbroidMe

1. Tell us a little aboutyourself.I have been in Dutchess
County for 10 years – atransplant from Buffalo, NY,with my employer, M&T Bank.I managed our Fishkill officefor 7+ years, transferred toour M&T@Work program andI am currently working withour BusinessCustomersin the UlsterCountymarket.2. What
positivechangeshave youseen to theprogram sinceyou graduated in 2004?The program was run under
different leadership at thetime. It was fairly similar, butI think the positive changesthat have taken place arethe addition of the LD Classproject, giving the participantsa hands on approach to projectmgmt., fundraising skills, andworking together as a team. The LD committee is muchmore interactive now with theparticipants. Both KarolynOsborne and the committee trulywork to manage the program, and take constructive criticism
from past participants on how toimprove/change the program.3. You are the Co-Chair
of Leadership DutchessCommittee this year. Whatother organizations are youinvolved with that you canattribute to your involvementwith Leadership Dutchess?I am currently on the Board
of Directors forthe Mid-HudsonChildren’sMuseum andhave been for4 years. I alsoparticipate onthe ExecutiveCommittee andthe Finance
Committee. Iwas also selected last year(2010) to sit on the ChamberFoundation Board. This wasa great opportunity because Ihad the chance to go througha Board merger, which wasa unique opportunity. (I mustsay, some similarities to bankmergers, several of which I havebeen involved in!) Both of thesehave introduced me to the worldof Non-Profits and I have metsome wonderful people andmade some lasting friendshipsthrough both.

Rare is the multimediacompany small enough tooffer personalized service, butlarge and talented enough tocreate cutting-edge content anddesigns using the most moderntechniques. Rare is SolaraMedia.Since 2000, Solara has been
responsible for some of the mostinnovative web design in theHudson Valley. Thanks to its embrace of

and modern elegance – movingparts coming together to engagethe end user in ways a simplelayout cannot. And now, Solara and its owner
Stephen Chachere are makinga push toward further onlineinnovation through an increaseduse of video.A professional videographer
with credentialed access toNew York State hospitals, mostof Chachere’s past video workhas been limited to the medicalsector until recently, when he
was contacted to produce apromotional video for a blacktopcompany.“My first thought was, ‘Well,
I don’t do that sort of thing,’ ”Chachere said. “But then mysecond thought was ‘Why not?’”Solara ended up producingthree- and five-minute originalsegments for the client.Today, Solara Media
believes that there are multipleopportunities for businesses toadd a video component to theirpresence on the web, whetheron their own site or their socialnetworks.
