Build Up: How God Strengthens the Church
The Sign of Maturity
1 Corinthians 13: 1-13 (located on page 1152 in the Bible located in
the seat back pocket)
Message Notes
Jesus, right now, I trust my current situation to You. I confess, it’s so easy to focus on my
current situation and leave You out. I admit I need rescue and hope. So here I am. I lay
my past, present, and future wide open before You. Thank You for giving Your life for
me, paying the full balance of my sins by dying on the cross, rising from the grave and
offering to redeem me. I choose to follow You. Amen

Next Steps
“Spiritual gifts, no matter how exciting and wonderful, are useless and even
destructive if they are not ministered in love. In all three of the “body” passages
in Paul’s letters (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 4), there is an empha-
sis on love. The main evidence of maturity in the Christian life is a growing
love for God and for God’s people, as well as a love for lost souls. It has
well been said that love is the “circulatory system” of the body of Christ.”
Warren W Wiersbe.
The purpose of spiritual gifts is the building up of the church (1 Cor. 12:7; 14:3,
5, 12, 17, 26). This means we must not think of ourselves, but of others; and
this demands love. Read 1 Corinthians 13:4–7 carefully and compare this with
the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22–23. Take note that all of the char-
acteristics of love show up in that fruit. This is why love edifies: It releases the
power of the Spirit in our lives and churches. As you read through the charac-
teristics of love, remember that they are the revealers of what is driving you.
The goal is not to work on one of the aspects/characteristics listed but to be
more and more under the influence of the presence of Christ. The more you
are under the influence/leadership of the Holy Spirit, the more you will be like
Jesus.
Being a disciple is best explained in what is referred to as the Great Command-
ment. In Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest command-
ment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”
“The Great Commandment is all about being in right relationships. The first
goal of a disciple is not doing; it is being rightly related to God, to yourself, and
to others. When you are being rightly related to God, self, and others, you will
naturally help others to experience the same thing. Doing comes out of the
overflow of being!” impactdisciples.com
Read Ephesians 5: 15-18, John 3:30 and John 15:5-8

Night of Song and Prayer, February 17, 6:30PM
Plan to attend a special worship service Friday, February 17, beginning at 6:30pm.
Following a brief time of teaching, we will devote the evening to singing favorite
songs and hymns, joining in prayer and sharing passages of scripture. It is our hope
that this will be an evening of praise, lament, confession, encouragement, celebra-
tion—wherever the Spirit leads, that will be the focus of our worship. All ages are
welcome, but the event may be best suited for students and adults. Child care will
be provided (please email worship@newcovchurch.org by Feb 13 to request
childcare for the event.

by what we give." -Winston S. Churchill
Luke 6:38—”Give, and it will be given to you.
They will pour into your lap a good measure,

Tech Team Members Needed
We are looking for creative, task-oriented, tech-savvy individuals to join
the Tech Team to produce worship service environments on Sunday morn-
ings. If you have an ear for music, consider serving as an Audio Tech. If you
understand the role of light and visual cues, you might be a great Lighting
Tech. Or if you’ve got an eye for detail in copy or a passion for visual aes-
thetics, think about serving as a Media Tech. Every role is vital to our Sun-
day morning experience, and we are currently accepting applications for
volunteers age 16 and up. If you’d like more information, mark “Worship
Ministry” on your communication card, or email bret@newcovchurch.org
today!
Spiritual Gifts Class
Knowing your spiritual gifts is a wonderful key in serving God’s kingdom.
Beginning next week, February 12, we are offering a two-week class on the
spiritual gifts. The class will be held in room 101/103 during both hours of
our Sunday morning service times. It will look at the different spiritual gifts
we find in the Bible, give you the opportunity to take an assessment that
will help you discover your gifts, and will give you some direction in how to
start using them to serve others. You can sign up online at
newcovchurch.org/gifts.
