This last Sunday, most of you will recall, was cloudy, cold and windy. It went from rain, to little pelts of ice, to snow as the hours passed. That being said, the sun was shining inside Brenda Auxier-Mailey’s garage. It was certainly a
picture of Rotarians at work. I was thrilled to see how within about a five-day notice since the day the coats arrived, we were able to round up both Rotarians and their families to knock out this very important project of Operation Warm.
The importance of a coat is something that often goes under the radar. According to the 2016 Kid Count Profile, about 15% of Iowa Children live in poverty. While still high, it did show improvement in the six years of

measurement. I am confident that our efforts in helping children stay warm in winter is a step in helping families feel just a little bit more secure as we enter into the colder months.
To quote Barbara Mikulski, “Each of us can make a difference. Together we can make a change.” That is what we did on Sunday! As I dropped my car full of coats off at Karen Acres Elementary school on this 40-degree day, I was reminded of my forever commitment to commu-nity and youth. I feel lucky to be part of a service organization that operational-izes critical community social issues and rolls up their sleeves to make a difference. #morethanacoat
Stay warm my friends!
Scribbles... Andrea Hansen - Iowa Public Radio
Our speaker on Friday was Central Iowa native and Urbandale HS graduate (1994), Andrea Hansen. Andrea is just a year into her position as Development Director for Iowa Public Radio. In this positon, she is respon-sible for membership and fundraising, among other tasks. She supervises a department of 9 people, with an additional focus on Customer Service. IPR is not related to, but is friends with IPTV.
Iowa Public Radio began in 1911, as one of the first 100 stations to be granted a broad-cast license in the United States. Its basic supporting location has always been at the State universities: Iowa State (licensed in 1911), University of Iowa (licensed in 1919) and University of Northern Iowa. IPR was formed into a not-for-profit entity in 2004. As such, it is not allowed to own any of its broadcast infrastructure, so this continues to be owned by the universities, with IPR continued...

covering the costs for operations and maintenance. Some of the hardware (tow-ers and generators) is reaching the end of its useful life; their main facility is twenty years old, and the back-up is forty! Their offices in Des Moines are not big enough to hold everyone; Andrea and her team are housed in space near the Des Moines airport. They hope to build onto the back of the Grand Avenue building, to add of-fice space and an area for public functions. A capital campaign is being planned, and they hope to establish an endowment fund.
In the past five years, IPR has grown from 200,000 to 250,00 weekly listeners, of which 28,998 are members. They have 508 program sponsors. They are having to grow their direct funding from these sources, as government and state fund-ing, such as the Corporation for Public

Scribe Continued...Broadcasting, is falling off. Of their annual budget of $8.2 million, $6 million comes from members, sponsors, and other private donations. As a part of their public outreach, they try to bring live performances of their programming to local audiences. Some recent examples to appear in Iowa are Story Corp, Cokie Roberts, Snap Judgment, The Moth and It’s Been a Minute. [Scribe note: I’ve attended a number of live record-ing shows, including Prairie Home Companion, Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me and Whaddaya Know?] The most frequent request they get is for Terry Gross, but she won’t leave Pennsylvania. They have 25 individual stations, the best known and widest coverage probably coming from WOI, at 90.1 FM and 640 AM. But you can look at a station map at IPR.org, as well as a scheduling calendar. So, tune your radio dials to the best thing in Iowa!
