ORLEY ews
Chairman and Secretary.
Jon said, “I believe very much in the Village Hall. I want to
see it protected and to see it prosper. I also have had a bit
more time on my hands this year, and wanted to use some of
it for the benefit of the village. I joined just after joining the
Parish Council, which was last summer.”
Ann Hilditch VHC role: The Women’s Institute Representative When joined: At least 12 years ago Occupation: Retired Norley resident: Since 1967 Contact: 01928 788369
Ann said, “I joined because I was asked to. And if you live in
a village and you want to take part in what happens in a
village you hopefully do useful things. It’s a chance to help
and do something interesting for the good of the village and
Several new faces have arrived on the Village Hall
Committee following a change in the way it is managed.
Norley Village Hall is now part of JNCOT, so the committee
was able to invite folk from a wider range of village
organizations to revitalise its flagging membership.
The School, the Scouts, the playground, churches, bowling
club and 0-5year olds’ playgroup all received this call to arms
and after consulting their troops, several community groups
took up the offer, swelling the VHC to a much healthier
twelve members.
It is hoped this influx will ease the burden somewhat on VHC
veteran members, who have been battling valiantly to raise
money for hall maintenance and repairs. And on Monday 16th
January the fresh assault began with a fundraisers’
‘brainstorming’ meeting held in The Tiger’s Head Pub.
Kate Greenhalgh caught up with some old and new VHC
members to find out why they joined and what hopes they
have for the future of the hall…

“We have to keep funding the hall in order to keep it in a
reasonable condition,” said Ann, who has played a key role
fundraising.
Joan Barclay VHC role: The Wednesday Club Representative When joined: “A long time back…in the teens of years” Occupation: Housewife Norley resident: All but the first two years of her life. Contact: 01928 788394
Many people will remember Joan from her 30 year tenure as a
mid-day assistant at Norley Primary School. Now a
housewife, Joan belongs to the Ladys’ Fellowship at St
John’s Church and helps organise funerals.
She is also the leader of the Wednesday Club, which has 45
members over 60 years of age. Joan felt the club should have
a representative on the committee – but there were no
volunteers so she joined. Joan says the hall is a ‘grand’ place
for people to meet and she is happy as long as it is “clean,
comfortable, tidy and warm.”
Stephne Douglas VHC role: Treasurer / 0-5year olds’ Playgroup Representative When joined: 1 year ago Occupation: Finance Manager Norley resident: 2 years
Stephné’s younger child attends the playgroup held in Norley
School on Wednesdays. Her occupation as a finance manager
made her the perfect choice for the role of Treasurer.
“It’s good to do something in your community,” said
Stephné, explaining why she agreed to join the committee
when approached. Of the hall’s future Stephné said, “I’d like
to see it a bit busier, with new windows in and just be used a
lot more.”
Rita Boon VHC role: Bowls Club Representative When joined: 2011 Occupation: Retired special needs teacher Norley resident: 24 years Contact: 01928 788185
Rita volunteered as bowling club representative to get more
involved with village life. What is most important about her
committee role is “Upkeep, care of the village hall,” Rita said.
“And that when further improvements are made to it that I’m
representing the bowling club’s needs and requirements,”
Rita added.
Senga Hackett VHC role: Community member When joined: 1 year ago Occupation: Housewife Norley resident: 4 years
Explaining why she joined the VHC Senga said, “I’d lived in
Norley three and a half years and thought I wanted to be a
bit more involved and meet people.”
Looking to the hall’s future Senga said, “It would be nice
for it to be updated and to get the money together for
windows. It’s a lot of hard work trying to raise money.
Some of the committee members are very good.”
James Dale VHC role: Methodist Church Representative When joined: 2011 Occupation: Ex-farmer Norley resident: 69 years Contact: 01928 787216
James was born in Norley. He is a lifelong member of
Norley Methodist chapel and a former President of Norley
Bowling Club, having joined when he was ten years old.
James volunteered as Methodist Church representative
because he believes the alliance between the village hall and
the church is an important one. When the church has held
functions the village hall has regularly provided parking
space. James believes in the importance of community and
describes himself as “a hundred percent village man.”
“I would love to help the village in any way I can” he said.
And he has proved it over and over by cutting the hedges
and grass at the village hall up to ten times a year.
Referring to the Wednesday Walks, the Wednesday Club
and the Horticultural Society, James said “there are some
wonderful things happening in the village.”
“We have got some wonderful people in the village,” he
said, naming – among others – Joan Barclay, Ann Hilditch
and Bruce Lane. “It’s those kind of people that the village
relies on,” James added.
Judith Hull VHC role: Community member When joined: 6 years ago Occupation: Child minder Norley resident: 35 years
Judith, a former member of the Parish Council, originally
joined the committee as their representative. But when she
retired as a Parish Councillor, she remained on the VHC as
a community representative. “I was happy to do it” Judith
said, explaining that she is keen to see the village hall
retained as a community meeting place.
“Keeping it going is not easy” said Judith. But referring to
future development proposals she added, “It’s an exciting
time ahead if it all comes off. It is used quite a lot and
hopefully it will be used more.”

chair and now I am back to being secretary again!” said
Penny.
“I would like to see the current village hall maintained and
improved - the original part is a lovely building and rewards
TLC. I would also like to see the hall benefiting from a
modern extension so that facilities can be improved,” Penny
added.
Gill Cosford
VHC role: Norley Primary School representative
When joined: 8 years ago
Occupation: Primary school teacher, with a specialism in
Autistic Spectrum Disorders
Norley resident: Since 2001
Gill is currently a Primary school teacher, with a specialism
in Autistic Spectrum Disorders. She is preparing to work
as school-based advisory teacher for Cheshire West and
Chester, as part of the Autism Team.
Due to her and her young children's involvement with other
local families and groups, when Gill first joined the
committee she provided a link between the Village Hall
and young Norley Mums, squirrels pre-school and Norley
Primary.
“I was invited to join by my child minder, Judith Hull, who
has been heavily involved with community projects and
groups over the years,” says Gill.
“I wanted to become involved in something constructive that
would help me make a contribution to my local community,
as well as develop personal links within Norley. And also it
appealed because I work with young children all day and
it was an opportunity to interact with a different circle of
people,”.
“I would hope that the village hall continues to develop as a
centre for all members of the community to meet and enjoy
good company and a range of activities and interests. It
should continue to be an important focal point for different
groups, bringing people together in many ways,” Gill said.

“Save the village hall” was Noreen’s objective when she
joined the committee nine years ago. Then the building,
which dates back to the 1880s, was under threat of being
demolished to make room for a modern replacement. “I think
it is a very characterful building” said Noreen, explaining
why she didn’t want to see that happen.
Since then the former Temperance Hall’s future has been
considered ‘safe’ then ‘uncertain’ again several times.
Explaining her hopes Noreen said, “It would be super to have
a modern extension attached to it. I hope they will get a nice
new extension and that it will grow and develop for future
generations.”
Marie Cliffe VHC role: Bookings Secretary When joined: “Donkey’s years ago…10years ago at least” Occupation: Retired post woman/shop assistant Norley resident: since 1970 Contact: 01928 788181
Marie is a former Norley post lady for the old post office on
Post Office Lane. She also worked as a shop assistant for
Vicar’s Café shop in Hatchmere. She took over the role of
bookings secretary from her husband. “I did it to get to know
people,” she said. Marie hopes to see the hall modernized a
bit. “It should be the centre of the village” she said.

Norley Village Hall’s Swarm
of Shimmying Senoritas Lively ladies packed out Norley Village Hall’s Zumba
class to get fit the funky way on 18th January.
The class, which regularly attracts 20 women, saw
numbers shoot higher still this week as word spread
further of the local lessons.
Delighted dance teacher Sara Emma Cole, from
Hartford, is now considering starting a second class to
meet demand.
BY KATE GREENHALGH
Sara started running classes in Zumba, the international hit
dance and fitness technique at Norley Village Hall in June
2011.
The Wednesday evening lessons have been a blessing for
Norley women sick of having to drive miles to join a class.
Safiya Parker, who goes most weeks said, “Because it’s on
your doorstep it gives you that incentive.” The convenient
pay as you go sessions quickly grew very popular after
initially beginning with just 6 women. “It’s had a brilliant
turnout. The ladies love it and it’s brought the community
together,” said Sara.
Zumba is a latin-inspired intensive work out that combines
merengue, salsa, cumbia and reggaeton dance moves. In just
one hour it can burn as much as 800 calories, but Sara keeps
her sessions down to 45 minutes so they are manageable.
She thinks Zumba has caught on because it is social and
fun. “It sometimes feels like you’re on a night out,” she
said. “It targets the whole body. I’ve noticed a massive
change in my body shape since I’ve done it,” said Sara. It
sucks in the waist, tones arms and is good for coordination
she said.
Salsa moves get people up on the balls of their feet, she
explained. And squats and funky hip hop style moves are
performed to cumbia and reggaeton, music genres from
Columbia.
Safiya feels the motivational benefit of exercising with a
group of local women. They walk to classes together in
summer, and take just one car between them in winter.
She thinks Sara’s lighthearted approach strikes the right
balance. “I think her personality makes a difference,” Safiya
said. “Anybody can do it. She gives you lower levels and
higher levels,” so people feel encouraged but not self-
conscious if they can’t keep up with everything.
A qualified dance instructor, Sara teaches part-time at a
primary school and lectures at Mid-Cheshire College. Prior
to taking up teaching, she danced professionally for pop
stars including band Eaton Road and the former X Factor
contestant Chico who went on to release the single ‘It’s
Chico Time’ in 2006 and is now competing on TV show
Dancing On Ice.
Sara picked up her Zumba teaching qualification at
Blackburn Rover’s Stadium. She said there are no
regulations to stop anyone teaching Zumba after just one
day of intensive training.
But she believes a formal dance education is the key to
running the best Zumba classes. Sara trained at Liverpool
Institute for Performing Arts, John Moores University and
the Hammond in Chester.
She was inspired to teach at Norley Village Hall by two
Norley women. They went to one of her Zumba classes in

Barnton and enjoyed it, but said the 7 miles travelling
would prevent regular attendance. So they asked if Sara
would consider running sessions at the hall, which would be
more accessible.
Teaching at Norley Village Hall gets the thumbs up from
Sara too, “The hall is a lovely hall and it has a sprung floor
so it’s perfect,” she said. “It’s lovely and clean.”
Sara plans to keep running the classes in Norley. On top of
working she is studying one night a week, but when that
finishes in May she hopes to start a new dance class for
children in Norley too.
She teaches street dance, break dance, tap, baby ballet and
‘baby bopping basics’.
To help people stick to their fitness New Year’s resolutions
Sara is drawing a raffle each week and the winner gets the
next lesson free.
“After three weeks you’ll notice the difference,” Safiya
said, adding, “I would go to another if she put it on twice a
week.”

The crowd dutifully moved off, down to the junction with
Maddocks Hill. In the distance, a man and woman could be
seen leading a white pony. The woman was tired and the man
ushered her towards the only inn in the village. We followed.
At The Tiger’s Head’ the Innkeeper and his wife argued over
whether they had room for the young couple. Eventually
space was found for them in an outbuilding and they
disappeared around the back of the inn.
By now it was dark but we walked on; up Pytchley’s Hollow
until we could see the flames of a campfire in the distance. At
the top of Town Farm Lane the shepherds were gathered.
They told a tale of oppression by an evil king and looked
forward to the coming of the Messiah who had been
promised. From the darkness, Angels appeared and in the
words of ‘While Shepherds Watched’, they sent the shepherds
into Bethlehem, to worship their new born king.
In the courtyard of the farm we met the three wise men. They
scanned their star charts talked knowledgeably about the baby
king and then went on their way, keen to find the child they
knew had been born.
In the stable we gathered to watch the Nativity scene unfold.
Mary and Joseph sat silently by the manger, admiring Jesus
their new baby. Then the shepherds arrived giving him a
fleece to keep him warm against the bitter cold. The wise men
sang, then knelt before God’s new born son and presented
him with their costly gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.
Angels appeared during the final carol, ‘Hark the Herald
Angels Sing’ adding to the atmosphere of love, joy and peace.
And so the message of Christmas was brought to life, as
relevant today as it has always been: Emmanuel, God with us.
Gill Stanning: Curate
The Zumba classes cost £3.50 and are held on Wednesdays
from 7pm and Sara caters for all age groups from 16years old
upwards. The oldest in the class is over 70 years old.
The only question remaining is how will Norley’s men
manage to keep up with our fit and feisty women now?!
Kate Greenhalgh
Nativity on the Move As dusk fell on a Sunday before Christmas, Norley village
came alive to tell the story of Jesus birth. As a crowd gathered
outside the school, singing a carol and listening to a black
cloaked Narrator began to tell the tale, the peace was
shattered by the arrival of a fierce Roman Soldier. He strode
out of the school doors and addressed the crowd, threatening
them angrily and sending them off ‘to the place of their birth’.
Some dissented, but were sent packing anyway.

meeting at the Tigers Head on 17 January, to continue the
work of speading the message about Neighbourhood Plans.
In particular he wanted to start the process of involving
interest groups within the village, a dialogue that John is
keen to develop in the weeks to come. We were delighted
to see about 20 people turn up, see picture of some of them
below.
A Core Group of village volunteers has been formed to help
drive work when it starts. There will be a need for a range
of volunteered skills from within the village if the plan is to
proceed smoothly. What skills do you have that you could
offer? These might range from town planning, project
management, to research, communications or a number of
skills we haven’t thought of! Please let me know at the
above address if you feel you have skills to offer.
We will keep you informed through the NN, but there are
some websites where you can learn more if your are hungry

Britain’s Best Village. Norley Village in Cheshire has again won the best village
competition. The judges said that the community spirit and
the quality of life here was the best they had seen anywhere.
Locals say it all started with the Neighbourhood Plan.
“Suddenly the village came to life. We all got to know our
neighbours and started to work together to make things the
way we wanted them to be. It’s a dream village to live in
now.”
No, you’re right. This hasn’t actually happened yet! But
you’d like it to? Yes? You’ll have seen the Neighbourhood
Plan talked about before, here in the Village News, but we
want to tell you that it’s actually happening now. As you
know, the government has given parishes the chance to
decide what happens to them in the future so, together, we
can make Norley the village you’d like it to be, the best
village it could possibly be. There will be lots of ways you
can and will need to, help this process. There will be
workshops to attend or run, surveys to help with, research to
do. And no doubt many other things we haven’t thiought of
yet! The steering group would like to hear from you if
you’d like to help move Norley into its bright new future.

Coming A number of events are already under discussion in the
village, including some centred on the Tigers Head. Your
Parish Council is very keen that we do full justice to this
important occasion in June in the way that villagers wish to,
and is looking for the involvement of Norley people to make
it happen.

to where these planters should be sited.
There are many possible sites – the triangle outside the

road edge near the Fortune Palace, have all been suggested.

CWAC Consultation On Taxi
Services
Your Chance To Have A Say Cheshire West and Chester Council manages the licensing of
both hackney carriages and private hire vehicles across the
Borough. Following Local Government Reorganisation
(LGR), the Council has inherited different policies in
different areas of the borough. These areas, or ‘zones’,
correspond to the previous local authority areas of Chester,
Ellesmere Port & Neston and Vale Royal.
The Council wants to ensure residents and visitors to the
Borough have access to safe and reliable taxis and private
hire vehicles. In order to do this, we want to produce clear
and consistent standards and guidelines for taxi and private
hire licence holders by harmonising the way the Council
regulates these services.
The consultation is being promoted via posters and flyers
(attached) across the borough and they will be displayed in
public buildings as well as community venues. A newspaper
advert will also be going in newspapers across the borough at
the start of the consultation with a reminder mid way through.
We are asking people to complete a questionnaire in order to

In support of the Village Hall and other Norley good causes
we plan to pull together a book of the Norley villagers’
favourite recipes. We plan a well presented volume, hardback
with photographs of the village and the recipes. This will take
some time, as it is a sizeable task to prepare and edit, but the
final product will we hope be a thing of lasting value, ideal
for a gift. We also said it would be available in the spring
this year!
A big thanks to those of you who have sent recipes in, we
have had a handful, but need more to create a credible cook
book.
Please let us have you favourite recipes; please email them
to me at Karen@Karenhornbyfood.co.uk, ideally this
month.
You can send us anything - preferably fairly short - and we
will try to use them all. The ones using locally available
ingredients and a quick explanation would be ideal. If you
have a photo too, that's great - or we can organise one later.
Here is one provided by our neighbours Beryl and Alan in

think from the 1950’s.
As ever all the ingredients can be bought from The Stores,
even frozen puff pastry.
I look forward to receiving your creations!

provide a briefing to members on Neighbourhood Plans. He

large scale development will need to take place in the
village; he was pleased that Norley wished to embrace
changes required. He stated that the completion of a
Neighbourhood Plan was a significant undertaking, which
had to meet statutory requirements, finalising in a
referendum, at which stage the Borough Council had a
statutory requirement in adopting the Plan. Jeremy
volunteered to
attend a Steering Group meeting to inform members of the
support available, including background information. He

Newsletter Dear Readers,
The children, staff would like to take the opportunity to
wish you a belated Happy New Year- we have been busy
making New Year resolutions, and how others can help us
stick to them!. I am determined to try and exercise more and
have promised the children I will try to walk round the field
at school more – this is quite a challenge as it is a long way
round!
As usual we have already been very busy at school… I hope
you enjoy reading about what the children have been up to!
We are very much looking forward to our completed mosaic
tiles being installed at the village hall – we are lucky to be
part of such a thriving community. Thanks especially to the
Church and the opportunity to take part in the range of
special Christmas events – the Walk Round Nativity was a
particular favourite!
Mrs Ann Griffiths HT, Staff and Children at Norley CE School
When we came back to Norley school in 2012 we all got
excited with all the new things we were going to do this
term. We have lots of different displays and activities.
One of our displays has a tree with a prayer the back of
every leaf. Everyone in the school has written a prayer for
the tree.
In class 3 we have started a topic about famous people. We
are researching inventions. Here are some of the inventions
we have researched so far; the DVD invented in 1993, we
also found out that the microwave was invented in 1945 and
e-mail was invented in 1971. When we have finished the
When Is A Cheesecake Not A Cheesecake?
When It’s A Cheshire Cheesecake Gary Wiffin, his wife Jemma and their business partner
Paula Haynes, are pleased to announce the opening of
their new Cheshire Cheesecake company shop at Lady
Hayes (Regency building, opposite the Playbarn). These
cheesecakes are really something different – see below.
Gary and Jemma have worked as chefs and Head Chefs
in a range of restaurants, hotels and licensed premises
around the UK, and as far as away as Australia. It was
while in Australia that Gary had the idea for the Cheese-
cake business, which is now coming to fruition.
They had been running the catering at the Ryles Arms in
Higher Sutton for some years, and doing outside catering
too. A cheesecake made for a wedding in Frodsham re-
ceived such rave reviews that they realised there was a
great demand for the products, and so far hey haven’t looked back.
These are local products: Gary and Jemma live in
Kingsley (they are the daughters and son in law of the
landlord of the Red Bull, Steve). The products them-
selves are local too – they use local eggs, dairy products,
fruit in season, and even their chocolate comes from a
top quality supplier in Wilmslow.
Gary has big plans for the Cheshire Cheesecake brand,
and as you will see, our tasting panel think he is on to a
winner, Find more out at
www.cheshirecheesecakes.co.uk, You can order through the shop of course, or contact Gary on 07578846115.
There is a special introductory offer for NN readers:
mention NN when visiting the shop, for 20% discount
during the first month.
Cheesy Grins all round!
We put together a tasting panel of Norley residents, who
tried four of the cheesecakes (a tough job but someone
had to do it!). They went down very well. Comments
included “A world away from normal cheesecakes”.
“Lovely presentation. They look great.” “Really creamy,
great texture” and, of the lemon meringue variety (the
favourite) “Really tastes like a lemon meringue pie, but
in a cheesecake!”. Others were too busy munching to
make comments, but we think the faces say it all.

work we will publish it on the website. So watch this space.
Norley School is looking forward to sporting events
including football matches, the rugby tournament and
running a mile for Sport Relief. Maybe you would like to
join us!!!
On Friday 20th of January, class three came into the class to
find three exotic class mates munching on some cucumber.
These new class mates were soon too be identified as Giant
African Land Snails! Some early arrivals from class three
named them Brian, Norman and Spud! (Norman from
Norley). These slimy snails like lettuce and cucumber...
Every weekend a different child takes home Brian, Spud
and Norman (much to the dismay of their Mum) and cleans
their tank out and gives them more lettuce! Every so often
the snails need to be flicked with water to keep them damp.
The suggestion came up in a School Council meeting about
having class pets; they decided that the options were either
fish or snails. Mrs Kelly quickly discarded the idea of fish
due to a phobia, (apparently it’s the eyes and fins) so the
School Council came to a conclusion. Snails. Mrs Kelly
bought the exotic snails in the nursery where her son goes.
So now we have School or class pet snails!
Class 3

After tea and biscuits we had a great favourite Mr. Roy
Willis addressing our ‘open meeting’ subject Burma
Mysterious Country. He opened with a computer generated
picture of himself by the gate of Aung San Suu Kyi. She
was released a day later. Between India and China is a
country called Myanmar. This is the modern name for
Burma. It is the largest country in SE Asia with a
population of 60.000.00. It has all its’ own resources and is
a very rich country in both minerals and produce, all natural
resources and big white sandy beaches. The people are very
friendly with English almost as a second language. They are
very dignified and religious with 65% Buddhist, 15%

smashed the rear patio doors activating the alarm.
Probably linked to the above a house in Keswick Drive
Frodsham was subject to a burglary around the same time.
Access was gained by smashing a rear glass door. Jewellery
was taken.
A handbag and contents has been stolen along with a

In relation to the Burglary Offences listed above I would
like to take the opportunity to reassure you that my staff

supported by colleagues from other departments which
include CID and the Operational Support Unit.
Finally can I share a concern I have in relation to the
number of Road Traffic Collisions occurring across the
Rural Area. Can I ask that you ensure your vehicle is
roadworthy before any journey, a simple check of your
tyres and lights may identify a defect that you were totally
aware of. When actually driving please drive at a speed that

Sponsor Your Norley News We are deeply grateful to our advertisers, and the Parish Council who have supported us over the years. All volunteers
with the NN give their time for free of course, be they editors, or delivery volunteers. BUT we need extra funds!
If you are willing to sponsor us it will help us carry on, and to provide the Norley News you want.
All you need to do is to leave your donation at the shop in an envelope with the tear off slip below. Thanks!
YES I do want to support the Norley News
