Norcros Adhesives is a UK manufacturing
company and part of Norcros plc. Norcros
Group has a long, international track record
in successfully developing, manufacturing
and marketing a range of decorative tiles
through leading UK manufacturer Johnson
Tiles. Their heritage in tiling allows Norcros
Adhesives the resources to research and
develop fixing products to respond quickly
to tiling trends.
Norcros Adhesives’ emphasis is on
delivering quality, service and innovation
to support architects, distributors,
designers, retailers and consumers in
choice and products that inspire and can
be trusted to perform. The business is
based on understanding client needs and
is underpinned by significant investment
in people, research and development,
plant and processes.
With an ethos rooted in the phrase
‘Job Done’, Norcros Adhesives’ focus is
on making life easy for customers from
specification or product selection to a
successful tiling installation.
For construction designers and specifiers,
the most widely recognised environmental
assessment methodologies used globally
are:
• LEED (The Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design)
developed in the US
• BREEAM (Building Research
Establishment Environmental
Assessment Method) developed
in the UK
• The Green Guide to Specification by
BRE is also a valuable tool for making
the best material selection in terms of
environmental impact
LEED is gathering momentum here in the
UK. The driver for this is often the client’s
global corporate policy or, on prestige
speculative developments, the needs
of global tenants.
Norcros are highly conscious of their
carbon footprint and work hard to
minimise the mark left on planet Earth.
Also understood is the challenges that
specifiers face in terms of creating
buildings that satisfy sustainability
demands.
By specifying Norcros products,
credits against these key sustainable
environmental assessments may be
awarded, for the following reasons:
• Norcros products have a very low volatile
organic compound
• Pallets are re-used, repaired or recycled
• Over 80% of Norcros bought in items
are sourced from a 30 mile radius
• Over 90% of waste material created
during the manufacturing process
is recycled
Norcros Adhesives believe their contracts talk far more eloquently than any glossy brochure can achieve. They deliver for the best in breed - The Olympics, Silverstone, The Houses of Parliament,
The Shard to name but a few. Such projects are specified by prestigious architectural firms, who have deemed Norcros Adhesives a trusted supplier, to support their development of such famous
British landmarks.
Stafford Leisure Centre (Stafford)
Norcros products were used in the
complete refurbishment of Stafford Leisure
Centre. The new state-of-the-art leisure
facilities; includes 25 metre swimming pool,
teaching pool with moveable floor, pool hall
and surroundings as well as full changing,
gym and beauty facilities.
The products used included:
• Norcros Prime Bond
• Norcros One Part Flexible Adhesive
• Norcros Rapid Porcelain Adhesive
• Norcros Flexible Floor and Wall Grout
• Norcros Super Epoxy Grout
All of the products used were highly
polymer modified, ensuring that they would
be capable of lasting in such a demanding
environment.
Fishermans Church (Brixham)
Channel 4’s programme; The Restoration
Man, saw Jackie Robinson and Neil
Worrell renovate the old abandoned St Peter’s
church, located in the heart of the stunning
fishing village of Brixham, into their first
home together. The church which was built
in 1874, had stood abandoned for 5 years so
when Neil and Jackie found it, it was derelict,
damp and dilapidated. Due to its poor
condition, it needed completely stripping
out internally and full restoration throughout.
Three different types of ceramic tiles were
used throughout the building including four
different styles and patterns of modern wall
tiles for each of the four unique bathrooms.
Victorian patterned clay floor tiles in
decorative designs for the master bedroom,
bathroom and kitchen area and off-white
extra-large Italian 1.2 metre square tiles
throughout the ‘modernist’ basement area.
Norcros provided technical assistance in
scheduling their requirements for tilling,
substrate materials, adhesives, grouts,
silicone and waterproofing compounds.
This was a highly complex specification
as a variety of substrates were tiled
including plasterboard, chipboard, plywood,
blockwork, concrete slabs and existing
masonry walls. ‘’Norcros were very helpful
technically and the products were
subsequently delivered to the site
quickly and efficiently’’ said Jackie.
With over 10 tonnes of ceramic tiles
used within the finished project; Neil
and Jackie are delighted with the result
on the finished build.
Marks and Spencer
Large format, unglazed porcelain tiles
were used across all three floors of
The Marks and Spencer Anchor store
in Westfield shopping centre; London.
As one of the largest shopping centres
in Europe with over 9,500m2 of retail space,
a solid hard - wearing solution was required to
withstand heavy foot traffic.
Using large format tiles can make it
difficult to achieve solid bed fixing, which
is essential in such a heavily trafficked area.
To ensure that there would be no risk of
impact damage, Norcros Thick Bed Porcelain
and Stone Adhesive was specified.
Products used on this project were:
• Norcros Thick Bed Porcelain and Stone
Adhesive
• Norcros Prime Bond
• Norcros Flexible Floor and Wall Tile Grout
Chelsea Flower Show (London)
A stunning example of the outdoor use of
tiles was the garden seat at Chelsea Flower
Show. In order to ensure that the 800
individual porcelain tiles were firmly bonded
to the exterior grade plywood structure.
The combination of neutral coloured tiles and
sharp, clean lines brought a highly - modern
minimalist feel to the design. Combined with
the beautiful, bright foliage surroundings;
this provided an eye catching and unusual
contrast.
Norcros products specified included:
• Norcros Prime Bond
• Norcros Thick Bed Stone and Porcelain
Adhesive
• Norcros Flexible Floor and Wall Grout
With a support service second to none,
clients are never alone with Norcros
Adhesives - the company focus is on
ensuring customer requirements are
met within specified timescales and
that help and advice is always available.
Specification support includes provision
of National Building Standard (NBS)
clauses through RIBA’s NBS Plus
programme. Norcros Adhesives’
product details and technical guidance
are submitted to NBS for restructuring
in NBS format, ensuring that the
correct product information is
available when needed.
By using NBS Plus, specifiers are
assured they are using the industry
standard specification system that
conforms to best practice. A specification
is a pivotal factor in the success of any
building project, and an essential part
of the design process. A badly-written
specification can cause major problems
for the whole project team, and can
take projects significantly over budget
at the time and in the future.
Norcros Adhesives’ technical support
offers a unique 24 hour turnaround of
M40 specifications, delivering concise,
technically accurate and up to date
specifications. Norcros Adhesives can
detail the full system build up ranging
from screeds, trims and backer boards
to adhesives, grouts and sealers.
Ask the experts
With over 25 years of experience,
Norcros Adhesives is well equipped for
the challenges and issues customers may
encounter during the specification and fixing
process. A working day for the technical
team brings everything from ‘what product
should be used for fixing glass mosaic tiles’,
to ‘strengthening a floor with minimal build
up of height’ and even ‘how to tile to
external metal bridge structures’.
Be assured, assistance is always available
to ensure jobs are completed effectively,
efficiently and to current British Standard
recommendations.
Technical support is evident both through
manned helplines and on-site visits. Free
of charge site visits by highly experienced
staff can be arranged prior to specifications
being written as well as during the fixing
process. In the event of any issues or
problems arising following the completion
of a project, a technical investigation can
be requested complete with site report.
A comprehensive site visit report details
the findings, together with detailed
recommendations for remedial work where
required. Clients can rest assured that
Norcros Adhesives are with them every
step of the way.
Opened in May 2016, the Norcros Adhesives Skills Centre provides modern, bespoke
facilities to enable the delivery of the company’s expanding range of product training
and tiling courses for the benefit of both its customers and own employees.
The Skills Centre comprises a lecture room and large practical area in which the size
and configuration of the tiling bays can be changed to accommodate up to 12 trainees.
The nature of the training puts the emphasis firmly on the practical aspects, with all
trainees encouraged to improve their own product knowledge and tiling techniques.
SKILLS CENTRE
Industry-leading training courses
delivered within the Skills Centre
include:
• Norcros product training, comprising
modules which aim to promote
Norcros products and their correct
use, helping trainees to develop best
practice, working towards NVQ level
and learning about the requirements
of British Standards.
• Natural stone fixing courses.
• Norcros Adhesives’ own Basic
Introduction to Wall & Floor Tiling –
a course principally aimed at the
DIY market.
• Tiling to Wet Rooms and Underfloor
Heating.
• One day bespoke courses aimed
at specific customers and their
requirements.
• CPD Training for architects,
specifiers and contractors.
With a raft of environmental credentials
to its name, Norcros Adhesives has a lot
to contribute. In 2016 the company won
The Tile Association Gold Award for Best
Environmental Initiative. This was in
recognition of the many measures the
company has implemented to improve
the environmental management of its
operations, including its business
management and the environmental
impact of individual products.
The company has also achieved ISO 14001
accreditation for its work to reduce waste
and improve resource efficiency. It is
worthwhile noting that within just 2 months
of joining the Sustainability School Norcros
Adhesives achieved Silver Member status.
One of the company’s top products -
Norcros Pro 30 Fast Track Eco Levelling
Compound - is also its most environmentally
friendly. The levelling compound
incorporates recycled crushed glass,
rather than quarried sand thus reducing
the depletion of natural resources.
The Supply Chain Sustainability School is
an initiative of the UK Construction Strategy
2025. This sets out clear ambitions for the
construction industry - including 50% less
CO2 and a 50% improvement on speed
of job completion with 33% less cost.
The School is committed to achieve
these challenging targets in partnership
with business leaders.
An independent third party, Action
Sustainability, delivers the work of the
School and all partners sign up to a
Code of Ethics. Over a period of time,
the School aims to drive up awareness
and understanding of sustainability issues
in the supply chain nationally.
Launched in 2012, the Sustainability School is an initiative designed to promote sustainability
in construction supply chains. It provides free practical support in the form of e-learning
modules, tailored self-assessment and action plans, sustainability training and networking.
Integral to the ethos ‘Job Done’ is superior
product quality. Each and every product is
stringently tested in high-tech laboratories
prior to being released to the market.
The products have achieved demanding
EN standards for European markets and
American ANSI standards for the US and
Middle Eastern markets. Working closely
with Lucideon, desired product quality is
achieved and subsequent rigorous Quality
Assurance processes ensure that product
integrity is maintained on an
on-going basis.
Contrary to popular belief not all products
passing the same industry classification
deliver the same quality. All Norcros products
comfortably pass the required standards to
ensure ease of use and consistency on site.
Norcros Adhesives’ products are superior
formulations as demonstrated by blind
product trials; they consistently match
and exceed the performance of other
leading brands.
Guaranteed for Life
As the industry is well aware - failures are
a major risk for specifiers and contractors
and hence a major barrier to the Company’s
‘Job Done’ ethos. Unlike some other
adhesive manufacturers, with Norcros
Adhesives, it’s not just adhesives and grouts
that are guaranteed for life. Every product
on the range is supported by the same
guarantee and, as a result, complete product
systems are guaranteed for life.
