Simply, cloud storage is a way to save information
to the web. Cloud computing services are online
services which store your information to a safe and
secure location online; they offer a quicker, easier,
and safer backup than conventional methods of file
storage. You can also access your files and programs
from any computer with an internet connection
anywhere in the world.
The advantages of cloud storage
• It’s more flexible than saving to disc or USB stick,
and you can retrieve your files from any computer
anywhere.
• No additional storage space is needed in your
home; all you need for online backup is an internet
connection.
• No need to connect external hard drives or swap
DVDs.
• You can schedule regular updates to run
automatically, ensuring that the data stored
‘in the cloud’ matches your hard drive data.

A Chromebook is a laptop running a Chrome operating system. The devices
are designed to be used primarily while connected to the internet, with most
applications and data residing “in the cloud”, so they’re accessible
anywhere, anytime, and from any device.
Built in virus protection Multiple layers of security help to keep you safe
from viruses, malware and other computer nasties
- without annoying you with pop-ups. Auto-updates
also make sure you have all the latest security fixes,
and more.
Easy to share Lend your Chromebook to friends or family without
giving them access to all of your files. Everyone has
their own files, apps and settings, so there are no
worries about anything being tampered with by
someone else. When it’s your turn again, just pick up
where you left off.
Speed Chromebooks boot up in seconds, and resume
instantly. And, unlike other computers, they avoid
software bloat and don’t slow down over time.
It works offline Apps like Gmail Offline and Google Docs let you keep
working even when you’re not connected to the
internet. A variety of offline apps are available in the
Chrome Web Store.
At home in the classroomIt’s easy to connect with Chromebook anytime and
anywhere with built-in Wi-Fi, so students can continue
learning after school and at home. Applications,
school work, and settings are stored in the cloud, so
multiple students can use the same Chromebook and
still have their own personalised experience when
they sign in.

Whilst price is a key consideration, you should balance it against device
features. For example, you may be willing to pay a bit more for extra memory, or
functionality. Some of these features will be more important than others, depending
on the user’s needs. Here’s what to consider when selecting a device:
How old is the student? For year 7 kids (11 year-olds), consider tablets
or laptops under 12” which are light and easy to carry. Older students will be fine
with full size laptops.
Battery Life Does the battery need to last for a full school day? Most tablets
have 5-8 hours battery, standard notebooks have anywhere from 4-10 hours. Take
into account if there will be easy access to charge the device at school. If you want
to compare the battery life of different devices, visit your local store & we can help.
Hard Drive (Storage) The amount of storage you need will depend
on how the device will be used. It’s safer to overestimate. Will it be used mainly
for reading, for lots of multi-media such as videos or word processing? This may
require more memory. Some devices will also have the capacity to add memory via
additional memory cards.
Durability Look for devices with toughened glass. However, no matter how
durable the device, they can be damaged. A good case is essential for tablets, as is a
screen protector to protect it from scratches. A good bag is essential for laptops to
protect it from bumps and scrapes.
Parental Control You can activate parental control on all types of devices.
Specialised apps & programs are available for this purpose while some operating
systems come with these features built in. For more detailed information visit us
in store.
Screen Size Most schools opt for 7, 8, or 10 inches. Each has advantages:
7”: A good battery life and easier for young students to carry.
8”: A good balance of battery life & bigger screen for easier reading, typing & research.
9.7” & above: best for viewing and usually more powerful, but may be heavier to
carry around.
Noel Leeming have tested devices in schools across New Zealand and can
recommend devices that are ideal for use at school. We have bundled several
devices well suited to BYOD to give you great value & peace of mind. If you need
more assistance in choosing the right product, our passionate team will be
more than happy to help – come in and speak to us today.

choosing the right
Windows device
A primary student typically requires a device that can withstand a certain
amount of wear and tear. With quality devices at great prices, there are
plenty of options to choose from. Ease of use and parental controls are also
really important. With Windows 8.1, you get a familiar Windows experience
and you have the control to manage how your child uses their computer.
A secondary school student needs their device to be quick and powerful to
allow them to research and create content using many different tools – like
Office 365, Windows 8.1 apps, websites and search engines. Good battery
life is also important to get them through a full school day.
HP Pavilion X360 With similar features as many
premium convertibles, the Pavilion X360
is an excellent solution for the price conscious.
Secondary students put their devices to the test – and this PC will perform. With its 360 degree hinge,
it’s easily converted from notebook to stand, or from tent to tablet mode to suit all kinds of tasks.
Surface Pro 3Great for university students on the go that need to work from home, but also take their device
in to uni. With a stunning 12 inch display in a sleek magnesium frame, it has all the power and
performance of a laptop, but in an incredibly thin, lightweight, versatile form.
Tertiary students need a device which can handle intensive use while they research, write essays,
create Powerpoint presentations and collaborate with their peers. Their device should also be able to
handle the demands of their personal life, such as playing games, socialising or even making computer
and mobile phone apps. They’ll want something smart and sleek which they can show off, but also
need it to be portable enough to carry between classes.
Windows Tablets Need the best user experience in a
smaller form? A Windows tablet will be
your perfect companion. With live tiles
pinned to your start screen that you
can move around and resize, it’s easy
to see what’s important to you with just
one glance. Pop your tablet into your
schoolbag for easy access on the go.

Why choose Windows devices for school? With Windows 8.1, you can
get a device that suits you. Whether you need a laptop, a tablet, or a
2 in 1 device that offers the best of both worlds, Windows 8.1 will give
you a familiar Windows experience that is personal to you. Windows
devices run Office, so that you can get more done with Word, Excel
and PowerPoint. Windows allows you to share your device - but not
your files & apps - with user accounts to keep things separate. And
they run the desktop apps you care about, plus thousands more in
the Windows Store. Here are some of our favourite Windows devices
across a range of shapes and sizes.
Windows 2 in 1 – HP X2 10.1” Hybrid tabletSometimes it’s hard to choose between a laptop and a tablet. With a
Windows 2 in 1 device, you get the best of both worlds. Browse the net
and check out the latest digital content with your tablet, and plug in a
keyboard when you need to get that essay done!

Improving cyber safety is easy – with a few steps you
can ensure your personal information is protected.
Password protect all of your devices• Desktop computers, laptops, tablets, & phones
should all be secured with different passwords.
• Change these passwords regularly.
Secure your Wi-Fi• Protect your wireless connection with a strong
password and encryption settings.
• Be cautious if you’re using an unsecured Wi-Fi.
Don’t use it for banking or other transactions.
• If you’re ‘tethering’ a device to a phone, make sure
you have a good password on your hotspot.
Secure your computer• Install adequate firewalls.
• Keep your anti-virus software up to date.
• Ensure your operating software is up to date.
• Back-up important information safely. If you’re
disposing of a computer, then remove all personal
data and clear the hard drive.
Printing used to be restricted to a desktop
computer. But now, printing from anywhere
is no longer a fantasy. In fact, it’s often a
necessity if using a smartphone, tablet, or
laptop is part of your daily workflow. We have
a huge range of printers to help increase your
efficiency – talk to us today about the right
printer to suit your requirements.
