THE GIANT SEAGULLS The Giant Seagulls are totally surreal, with working beaks, they’ll be rummaging in bags and pockets, stealing food from plates and picnic baskets, causing chaos and squabbling amongst themselves. Shrieks of laughter follow them wherever they go. Keep your eyes peeled for the local roving act.

The Newport Folk Festival is now an established feature of the Hobsons Bay community calendar. This year’s festival will again entertain, inspire and delight all those who accept the invitation to ‘Come & Play’. There will be plenty of opportunities to sing, dance, preserve (sauerkraut workshop!) and of course listen to and enjoy the range of music and stories.
Spoken word has become a key element of the festival over the last 4 years. This year’s program includes Children’s Storytime, Stereo Stories (matching songs with personal stories), Stories by the Fire (a 2 hour story telling session for grown ups), a tribute to Australian poet C.J. Dennis, and The Mahabharata Adventure (Stories from the East).
The music program covers the spectrum from the raw roots music of The Dirty Birds to the ethereal harmonies of Co-cheòl. There will be opportunities to play along (The Tues Blues Jam, Australian and Celtic Sessions), learn some dance moves (Broadway Song and Dance,
and Singing Workshops).
This year’s special festival event at The Substation is the concert ‘Folk to Classical’ featuring Newport Strings and Friends. This program will travel the musical terrain from
of the concert will be a grand piano brought in for the occasion, and local pianist James Russo will delight with his performance of Chopin. In typical Newport style, the concert will even feature some audience participation!
So … Come & Play – and be part of this wonderful community celebration of life and living!
