NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce2
The recent snow storm, the fifth largest in Twin Cities history, gave us all some enforced personal downtime. Sitting in the house all day, watching the snow and wind, gave me time to reflect on why I so actively sought to join this Chamber.
When I run into friends and colleagues and mention that I work for the Chamber, they invariably default to “Oh, isn’t that where you
have a breakfast meeting and exchange business cards?” For far too many people their perception of the Chamber is one that is many years out-of-date. This may have been
chambers in the past, maybe even some chambers yet today, but it is certainly not the Saint Paul Area Chamber.
This Chamber is the leader, region wide, fighting for business advocacy with the public sector. In just the last four months we have posted over 20 statements or letters to the public sector on issues of importance to our members. From zoning to transportation, parking meters to fiber optic broadband, this Chamber is an active leader in engaging with our elected officials on behalf of our members. We don’t pretend that we are the only voice of business present in the argument, but we will not take a back seat to any organization in making sure our voices are heard and our issues are responded to.

That same passion holds true with our events. We strive to bring in local and regional speakers who our members would not otherwise get the opportunity to directly engage with. From Joe Dixon, the Assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted Tom Petters, to Marilyn Carlson Nelson, Chairwoman of the Carlson Companies, our speakers inform and challenge our members on issues of business importance. Our members know that attending a Chamber event includes networking opportunities, but as importantly it includes fascinating speakers who broaden our own horizons.
Your Chamber has no plateau. We are not striving to reach a new level; we are striving each and every day to climb the next highest mountain. We can and will get better in everything we do for our members. Our members give us the passion and energy we need to push ourselves even harder. It may be ego, and if it wasn’t there I’d be a bit worried, but this is the best chamber in the Twin Cities thanks to our members and our staff!
Thank you and have a wonderful 2011 in your business success.

At the core of every educational institution there is passion and a drive for the academic success of its students – the leaders of tomorrow. The University of St. Thomas has been deeply rooted in the Saint Paul community and its students since it was founded in 1885 by Archbishop John Ireland. The institution prides itself in its value-centered, career-oriented curriculum, which today includes bachelor’s degrees in over 85 major fields of study and more than 45 graduate degree programs.
Over the past two decades, St. Thomas has added three new campuses – Owatonna, downtown Minneapolis and Rome, Italy. From the mid-1970s to the early 1990s alone enrollment grew from about 2,500 mostly male undergraduate students to more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate women and men. In more recent years, the increased rates of enrollment encouraged the University to expand its Saint Paul campus facilities and replace inadequate structures with the construction of a student center, an athletic and recreation complex, and a parking ramp.
University representatives involved in the construction development have made a strong effort to incorporate student feedback and ideas for the new campus facilities. “Students have been very excited about the University’s construction projects and the expansion has also been a great recruiting element,” said Doug Hennes, Vice President of University and Government Relations at St. Thomas. “Freshmen enrollment has gone up this year, and although we cannot directly link it to the expansion, the new facilities are a positive component.”
Since the construction began three years ago, St. Thomas has invested $133 million into the Saint Paul economy. While new construction can be a challenge, the University has worked hard to satisfy neighborhood concerns. In 2004, St. Thomas helped to establish the West Summit Neighborhood Advisory Committee (WSNAC) to address community concerns and plans for the new buildings. WSNAC consists of representatives from St. Thomas, neighborhood organizations and community councils and

meets on a monthly basis. Additionally, WSNAC has three subcommittees – campus development; housing; and traffic, parking, safety and student relations – which meet monthly.
In the midst of ongoing construction projects, St. Thomas has not diverted attention from the most vital component of its existence – the students. Accommodating the ever-increasing student body’s needs is the primary mission of the current projects. “Students seek colleges for many reasons and that certainly includes facility expectations,” said Hennes. “This really does play a part in the decision-making process and we intend to provide all of the appropriate amenities that students look for.”
The University of St. Thomas’ visionary outlook and mission to advance the common good is something that will keep brilliant minds walking through its doors time and time again.
St. Thomas timeline of recent projects:

Your Chamber and Moore, Costello & Hart partnered in early 2005 to create a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.
This award honors those who provide leading examples of how mermbers of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.
Vince Montgomery, President of TKDA, accepted the Celebrate Business Success Award at the Chamber’s December Membership Meeting. The employee-owned professional services firm provides engineering, architecture and planning to clients nationwide. Having been a fixture in the Saint Paul area for over 100 years, TKDA has had the opportunity to be involved in the construction and rehabilitation of so many great local landmarks, including the Union Depot, the Como Park Conservatory and the Saint Paul Cathedral, just to name a few.
