Community Education is a program that connects local citizens and resources through community engagement and collaborative partnerships to improve our schools and the community as a whole. A minimum number of registrations is necessary before a class can be offered. Suggestions as to what courses should be offered are always appreciated. Additional courses will be offered if there is sufficient demand and if an instructor is available. YOUTH CLASSES FAMILY SING ALONGS (Missy Fluegge) Bring the whole family for music-‐making fun! With easy-‐to-‐sing songs from around the world we will explore music and movement, play instruments, and have fun with the parachute. No singing ability is needed and adults and kids of all ages are welcome. These classes are geared toward children ages’ birth through kindergarten. Missy is a trained music Together Teacher and former Licensed Center Director. Come and enjoy forty-‐five minutes of singing, smiles, and cuddles. Sign up for one or both classes. But with opportunity comes responsibility. This course covers a variety of common scenarios and topics specific to boys and girls preparing to stay home alone or stay home with younger siblings. Topics include but are not limited to: sibling conflict, stranger danger, healthy choices, problem solving, and identifying emergencies. Course format will use discussions, fun quizzes, and hands-‐on-‐exercises to enhance learning. Parents are welcome to stay.

We will make a few versions, including raspberry and lavender, conduct taste tests and send recipes home for you to use at your summer lemonade stand or backyard barbeque.
LEGO DESIGN I (Bee Smart Learning, Sheila Rahn) Entering Grades 1-‐3 Fees: $73 Jefferson Elementary Cafeteria June 9, 10 & 11 8:30-‐11:30 a.m. Minimum 8, maximum 36 Your child will learn science and math concepts while working with materials from the Lego Educational Division. Children will learn how to use levers, pulleys, and gears in order to build projects such as carousels, drawbridges and conveyor belts. This class offers great hands on learning opportunities for the beginner. This course will expand your child’s knowledge of science and math concepts. Your child will gain confidence in his/her ability to understand how simple machines work. You will build projects including a crane, catapult and racecar. The fees include a take home prize! Your child will gain an understanding of how wheels, axles, levers and gears work together to make vehicles move. The children will have the opportunity to hook up a motor and a battery to their vehicles and race! Using some of the math and science concepts learned in school and in this class, your child will build Battlebots out of Lego materials from the Lego Educational Division. They will work with a team to create vehicles that will compete in the battle ring! Your child will learn about torque, tension, force, friction and compound gearing. Bring your imagination and your competitive spirit; this class is high-‐speed fun! The fees include a take home prize! Start with a blank canvas and acrylic paints and learn the basics about brush strokes, mixing paint and basic painting techniques. This will be an enjoyable time to paint with friends! You will bring home three creations at the end of class. Display them as stand-‐alone or as companion pieces. All materials are supplied, Aprons are available, but we suggest that you dress accordingly as acrylic paints do not wash out of clothes. SAVVY KIDS IN THE KITCHEN: SUMMER COOKING CLASSES (Lindsay Dalluge, New Ulm Hy-‐Vee Dietitian) Ages 7-‐11 Minimum 5, maximum 15 Do you have energetic and independent kids home for the summer? Let them join Hy-‐Vee dietitian, Lindsay Dalluge for this class. This class is designed for 7 to 11 year-‐olds (just the kids), that feature tasty recipes that are fun for kids and powered by good nutrition. Components of the class include fun learning in the aisles where kids will discover healthy options in the supermarket; experiences with breakfast, lunch and/or snack foods, and making healthy recipes that can be repeated at home. Through small group construction, teams of 4-‐5 students will learn to work cooperatively to design, build and program a LEGO robot to accomplish various tasks. We will have several examples to inspire you so you can design your own canvas to take home. We will give younger hands additional help as needed. If you have previously taken this class, we will help you create a more advanced project this time. These projects are absolutely stunning!

We will start off learning the alphabet and numbers in sign language. Then we will move onto some basic signs, animal signs, family signs; as well as, colors and days of the week. This class will cover the basics of seat, brake, and gear adjustment. You will also have the opportunity to change an inner tube during the second hours. First timers and experienced carvers will all learn a lot. Learn the skills needed to chip carve a beautiful desk coaster. My Chip Carving Knives will be provided for your use along with a practice board and materials to chip carve the project. The only thing you need to bring with you is an attitude ready to learn. You will learn how to prepare the wood surface, apply the pattern, and carve the coaster. Proper technique will be emphasized and encouraged throughout this class. Knife sharpening will also be taught and demonstrated.
HYPNOSIS (Dr. Mary Fischer, Dr. of Clinical Hypnotherapy and certified Clinical Hypnotherapist) Monday, May 11 Washington Elementary School Media Center (enter door #2) Fees: $55 per person for one session OR $95 for both the weight loss and stop smoking Weight Control: Hypnosis can help you control your eating habits, and help you stop the constant thinking about food; overeating; and snacking. You will also learn to desire the right foods, push your plate away when full and motivate yourself to exercise. Stop Smoking: what will your future be like if you don’t stop smoking? YOUTH CAMPS NEW ULM GIRLS BASKETBALL CAMP The Girls Basketball Camp will run two difference weeks depending on age level. SUMMER BAND CAMP Students entering 6th-‐8th grade June 8-‐12 Directors: Ann Ayer and Pat Nelsen Monday through Thursday 1-‐3:30 p.m. Friday 9 a.m.-‐7 p.m. Fees: $65 (includes a camp t-‐shirt) Band Camp will be a week-‐long workshop involving rehearsals in a large ensemble, sectionals for like instruments and fun musical games. Camp will take place in the New Um High School Band Room (enter door #4) Monday through Thursday. On Friday, the band will travel to the Cities to perform their songs at North Plaza, downtown Minneapolis as part of the Summer Lunchtime Performance Series. The performance will be followed by a fun afternoon at the Mall of America’s theme park, “Nickelodeon Universe”. EAGLE POWER PROGRAM June 8-‐August 6 (Monday through Thursday) No camp July 4 through July 10. New Ulm High School The Eagle Power Program is an enrichment opportunity. It is not a requirement of the Activities Department or any of the High School sports teams. The New Ulm Summer Training Program is available to all current New Ulm athletes (including incoming freshman and 7th & 8th graders). This program is designed to give our athletes the opportunity to gain a competitive edge through strength and conditioning. All athletes will benefit from this camp and are encouraged to attend. Our strength and conditioning specialists design all of our programs. Our camp is implemented by our own coaches. This gives our athletes a unique opportunity to continue to develop relationships with their coaches outside of their particular sport. Next year’s juniors from New Ulm Public Cathedral, Minnesota Valley Lutheran and Riverbend ALC are invited to apply. Enrollment is limited to 28 participants. The series is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative and was funded with money from the Minnesota Arts and Culture Heritage Fund. Thursday, April 16 Doug Ohman, “Barns of Minnesota”. Doug is a photographer and popular public speaker. His photographs are featured in the “Minnesota Byways” series. Thursday, April 23 Mike Roberts, author of “The Last Keeper at Split Rock”. Mike was the last lighthouse keeper stationed at Split Rock when it closed in January 1969 and then wrote a book about it. The book is a memoir about his active U.S. Coast Guard military duty on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Thursday, April 30 Cathy Wurzer, author of “Tales of the Road, Highway 61”. Cathy unearths stories about historic buildings, abandoned sites, decaying structures and more as she travels down Highway 61 and into the past, spotlighting famous and fascinating locations, many of them little remembered today.
