Thanks for reading our latest newsletter edition. Our continual mantra
here at Wingham High and what we like to stand for in the community,
is a place that has a strong culture of learning. I have stated on many
occasions that Wingham High enjoys a fantastic community
connection. We continually work on this development of culture on a
daily basis.
What I am most looking forward to is a courageous project that
combines the teachers of both primary and high schools of the
Wingham drawing area in professional learning. Our teaching staff will
be engaged on Saturday with latest research and educational
developments on how we can ensure our students are continuing to
improve.
I am a big believer in staff focusing on improving their abilities from
where they currently stand. I am hoping that the day will be a fantastic
one to which we gain a lot of insight and ask questions of ourselves
and our teaching practice.
I hope you enjoy the read ahead and will inform you of how our
teaching is evolving with the needs of todays student.

Wingham Show 2018 proved to be an excellent learning opportunity for our show team members with many of
the older members being unable to attend due to work commitments, this meant many of our younger members
had to step up and had the opportunity to parade and judge without our older students guidance.
The students who attended this year and competed included Madison Fitzgerald, Jack Lyon, Matilda Williams,
Sarah Busuttil, Jennifer James, Tamika Townsend, Tamika Brown, Shyanne Harvey, Meggan Watkins, Emily Brood,
Jack Lyon, Topanga Yeark and Caitlyn Watkins.
The 2018 show saw a major increase in competitor numbers with a strong field of entrants from other local and
regional high schools within the judging of live animals. Shyanne Harvey made it through to the semi-finals and
achieved a point score to complete an oral presentation. This was excellent as she had to judge steers and heifers
and achieve a point score over 200 amongst 80 other competitors.
Topanga Yeark achieved 2nd
place in her paraders class and her steer, 87 won his class. Steer 58 came third in his
class amongst a large group of steers.
This show was the first show this group of steers have attended and will now go on to attend Wingham Beef Week
in May 2018. A big thankyou to Troy Urquhart for transporting the steers to the showground for the show team.
Another thankyou goes out also to Hayley Brood, Hayden Palmer and Cassey Williams, ex-show team students, for
helping with the organisation of students on the day. A lot of pre-work to the show was completed by Sophie
French, Emily Brood and Cassidy Mills to get equipment, students and steers up to spec for the event. Student
involvement in these community events has many positive learning outcomes for our students. It not only teaches
animal management skills but builds resilience while working with others.
A reminder now for Beef Week on May 14th 2018. All entries must be received to the Wingham High accounts
office by Monday - Week 11, Term 1. All students who wish to compete in the Judging and Parading must
return their notes and money ASAP. 2018 will be the first time all entries will be on-line and this will
include a cut-off date which we have not had in the past.
Also, all Agriculture, Equine and Primary Industries show team students should return their Tocal note ASAP to
confirm their seat on this tremendous excursion on May 4th.
Thankyou to all the community members and parents who continue to support our school farm and if any
individuals or groups wish to donate or discuss steers for showing please contact Mr John Hawkins or Mr Bob
Settle at the farm.
John Hawkins.

New Recycle Volunteers
RESPECT | TRUST | FAIRNESS | POSITIVITY 9 Rowley Street Wingham NSW 2429 | 02 6553 5488 | www.wingham-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
Firstly a big thankyou to volunteers Jaxen Sandford,
Hayden Essery, Cody Chambers and Matt Lonsdale for
doing a fantastic job collecting the recycling over the
past two years. In 2018 we welcome the new team Jim
Turner, Tamika Townsend, Tyee Smith and Dylan
O’Hara. Each Friday morning the team collect all the
recycling from the staffrooms and from around the
school, and on bin collection day they take the bins to
the kerbside for collection. Thanks for volunteering and
continuing the good work.
2017 Yearbook
In 2017, 9E1 (aka 9 Slessor) created a school yearbook. During terms 3 and 4, every
second Friday, they divided into small groups each assigned to a different year. They
then went around to classrooms, gathered photos, talked to year advisers, SRC reps,
individual students and each other. Eventually, with a lot of work, it all came together
in the Wingham High School Yearbook which will be available to purchase soon!
Year 12 Senior Success Due to the lack of participation there will not be any further sessions of Senior Success for Year 12.
We are exploring further options such as using sport time and we encourage parents and students to
share with us what they would attend. Senior Success has been operating for several years and has always
been of great benefit to students. See Mrs Harrell if you are interested in the sport time-frame or if you
have any suggestions.
Don’t Forget - The CAPA Concert is on Thursday 22nd March - 6:00pm in the MPC
Royal Easter Show Poultry Competition The 2018 Royal Easter show is approaching and two of our students have been
working on a detailed project concerning growth and development and egg
production in laying birds.
The two girls Shari Urquhart and Stephanie Davis-Stone have been working together
since October 2017 patiently recording data concerning 6 Hyline commercial laying
birds. They have developed a PowerPoint displaying their data and recording visually
the development of birds. Three birds have been selected and along with their data
will be off to the Royal Easter Show for the final part of the competition on March 20th
.
Thankyou to Mr David Hopkins, a local poultry enthusiast, who will transport the birds
to Sydney and back for the students.
Best of luck girls after many months of tedious work on top of your own school/life
commitments.

Year 7 Breakfast
The Year 7 meet and greet BBQ breakfast on Wednesday was a huge
success. It was great to see so many families taking time out of their

The boys had a tough first game against Great Lakes College. In the first 3 quarters they played like
they were wearing ice skates in a pond of water. In the 4th quarter they got themselves together and
gave tit for tat. The second game was a more even game where the boys played really well defeating
Chatham 42 to 32. Well done to Jack Robertson and Lester Andrews for stepping up to play seniors.
Mr Keen's son Lachlan met Newcastle Knights player Mitchell Barnett. Mitch
played 22 NRL matches in 2017 and won the Danny Buderus player of the
year award. Mr Keen and Lachlan had the chance to catch up with him at
the season launch. Mitch will be playing lock for the Newcastle Knights in
the 2018 season.

Creative Creature #1
My Favourite Artwork:
Birth of Venus (Botticelli) I love Aphrodite-
she’s my favourite Greek God. Venus is the
Roman name of Aphrodite- the Goddess of
Love. I love that she is in it. I really like
Botticelli’s style and the Renaissance Period
of Art which is one of my favourite art
periods. I like the display of Greek and
Roman Gods; the artworks of their wars; the
style of the period; how the works are very
detailed and they liked oil paints and some
of the sculptures were bigger than life-sized.
They used really dull colours, not bright
pinks or yellows, which I like.
My Favourite Artist: Bansky.
I love that Banksy is an anonymous artist and he has
artworks in various public places. His artworks protest
against the government and display his views of the
world’s injustices … showing what is happening today.
My material practise :
I like drawing with charcoal. I don’t
have anything particular to focus on,
I kind of like to have a go. If I like a
specific thing I will try different
variations.
I like doing the human figure and
getting all of the proportions right,
just like Da Vinci.
My Favourite exhibition:
Sculptures by the Sea. I like that it is
on Bondi (Beach) and very aesthetic.
My Favourite Art
Period:
Greek Classical
and Ancient Roman
My Art Future:
I’d like to continue
doing it when I am
older, as a hobby.
My Future Career:
I really want to be a
doctor. I’d love to be a
surgeon. Studying Art
strangely enough has
many links to this.
Da Vinci studied anatomy
and so will I at some
point.
My name: Courtney Eggins
My year: 11
My age: 16

Canteen Roster Phone Judy on 6553 5488 if you would like to volunteer.
Student Cooking Program On Thursdays in periods 1 and 2, Tamika Townsend and Tim
Pfister are two of the many students involved in the student
cooking program. The program involves preparation and
cooking with Mrs Blanch and provides a delicious variety of
foods for a whole school staff morning tea.
Students involved in the cooking program develop skills for life
including literacy and numeracy that will assist their transition
to independence beyond school.
Parents Marina Kmet and
Ray Little volunteer on a
regular basis.
If you would like to
volunteer once a term,
once a month or every
week - any time is
appreciated. Phone Judy
for further information.
