Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
Advent Fundraising - Thank you to all the students and parents who have already returned their raffle money. A reminder
that any outstanding raffle tickets, money and ticket stubs need to be returned to student reception in the envelope provided
by Monday 17 December. The draw for the raffle will take place on Wednesday night at the carol service.
Any food for hampers and donations for Project Elf need to be handed in by Monday at the latest so that they can be
distributed in time for Christmas. All donations will be very gratefully received.
Carol Service - Our evening of readings and carol service takes place on Wednesday 19 December. Many parents and
families make a special effort to ensure they do not miss this evening which is always excellent preparation for Christmas and
reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas. This year our service is going to be extra special and should not be missed.
The evening begins at 7.00pm and everyone is most welcome to join us.
End of Term Arrangements - On the last day of term, weather permitting, we will make our annual walk to Holy Family
Church to celebrate our lovely Christmas Mass with Fr Pat. Students will be dismissed from Holy Family Church after mass
at approximately 1.00pm. If parents would like students to return to school after mass to be collected, please inform tutors.
VIP Party and Year 7 Christmas Lunch - It is certainly beginning to feel a bit like Christmas.
On Tuesday we were delighted to welcome some of the older members from our local
community for the annual Christmas dinner. Our guests enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch in the
canteen served by students followed by entertained in the Sixth Form area with singing and music
led by the students. Our guests departed full of Christmas spirit with a small gift made by the
technology department. On Thursday Year 7 students enjoyed their extended Christmas lunch
along with their tutors and Head of Year, Mrs Marano. Students pulled crackers and were joined by a very special guest,
Father Christmas before watching “The Grinch” in the Canon Diamond. Many thanks to all the staff and students who
organised the lunches and activities, particularly our canteen staff.
Admissions Policy 2020/21 Consultation - The Governing Body of Cardinal Newman Catholic School is consulting on
the Admissions Policy for September 2020.

‘Wizard of Oz’
On 10th December, Year 7 students had a wonderful time following the Yellow Brick Road on their way to Oz,
during a theatre trip to the Birmingham Rep to watch a spectacular production of the ‘Wizard of Oz’. The cast
were incredible at singing and dancing whilst re-telling the classic story of Dorothy (and Toto!) trying to return
home with their new-found friends.
The students had a fantastic day overall and were a credit to the school. A particular thank you to Miss Burn,
Mrs Isherwood, Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Pears who kindly offered to support the trip.
Malaika Kanwal stated of the experience, “It was a really good show where the effects and dancing we saw on
stage were amazing.”

God of hope, who brought peace
into this world, be the peace that dwells between us.
God of hope, who brought joy into this world, be the joy
that dwells between us.

Music Successes
There have been some amazing results in guitar exams
recently:
Judith Masih (8TRD) - Grade 1 - Distinction
Zachery McDermott (7NWH) - Grade 1 - Distinction
Millie Shine (7SON) - Grade 1 - Distinction
Also, on Friday night Liam Kealey (11MCN), Charlie Venables
(11RNN) and Max Tiernan (11RNN) performed at The Coal

astounded by the talent of

Year 8 Football
Coventry Schools’ Cup - First Round
This first round match of the Coventry Schools’ Cup was a
tough opener for the Year 8 team. Sidney String were
probably the strongest team Newman have played against.
Year 8 played some fantastic football, moving for each other and using the
ball well. Despite having the best of the game, the score was 0-0 at half
time.
Play continued this way until Sidney Stringer scored against the run of
play. I’m proud to say that Year 8 kept their heads up and got back into
the game with a fantastic shot from Kaidon Hand-Wills, before Kelvin
Bello scored the winner with a clinical finish.
Man of the Match was Jack Mansfield for his tireless work and unselfish
play.
Well done to all.

Alton Castle - ARYPT
7-9 December 2018
15 Year 7 students were selected from 225 to
take part in the Christmas Retreat last weekend at
Alton Castle with the Andrew Robinson Young
People's Trust.
The weekend allowed our young people to
experience the great outdoors on what can only
be described as a cold and wet weekend (there
was a little bit of sunshine).
On Saturday night, following a day packed full of
adventure and fresh-air, they were treated to a
huge Christmas dinner with all the trimmings
followed by a beautiful mass that many of our
students chose to take a starring role in.
Our Year 7 students were joined by over 70 students from Catholic
primary and secondary schools from all over Coventry and great
friendships were forged.
Students also received a visitation from Father Christmas and his wife
along with two VERY tall elves who brought Christmas presents for
everyone.
A huge thank you to Maria Bracken, ARYPT and Alton Castle for giving us
such a great retreat, an experience our students will never forget.
Despite a very busy weekend of trekking, cycling,
walking through mud, archery and much more,
students were still able to rouse themselves from
their beds to attend school bright and early on
Monday.
Miss Byrne, Miss Keane, Mrs Marano and Mrs Isherwood
Year 7 Football
Coventry Schools’ Cup - First Round
Sadly, our Year 7 boys bowed out of the Coventry Schools’
Cup in the first round. After taking the lead in the first half,
Year 7 failed to capitalise on multiple changes to stretch their
lead. Bishop Ullathorne were awarded two penalties to win the tie 2-1.
Man of the Match was Aiden Walsh.
Mr N Minshull, Team Coach
“You shall give to him freely,
and your heart shall not be grudging.”
Dear Parents/Carers
The shop and TV adverts are letting us know that Christmas is just around the corner! With that in mind, here at Cardinal Newman we
are launching our annual Advent Charity Drive. Our students are renowned for their generosity and for living out the Gospel values
encouraged by school and home. This leaflet outlines all of the that will be happening to raise money for various charities during Advent.
Please encourage your son/daughter to get involved and help others to have a better Christmas. Any parents who have access to
contacts/resources that will aid our efforts, please contact Miss Keane, carmel.keane@cncs.school
For the first time at Cardinal Newman we are having a Christmas
Raffle. We have some incredible prizes up for grabs and would
ask for parents support in selling the tickets far and wide. Tickets
are £1 each and the prizes available are:
1st Prize - PS4 with FIFA 19, 2nd Prize - £150 Voucher,
3rd Prize - Spa Day.
Plus many more.
Tickets are on sale now, please see the letter that has been sent
home with the raffle tickets for information on how to submit
your tickets.
This year we are doing
something a little
different. Students have
suggested some
Christmas treats that
they would like to sell at
break times to help add
to our fundraising drive.
6th December - Years 7/8
14th December - Year 9/10
19th December - 6th Form
There are hundreds of children in
Coventry who will not get a present this
Christmas and there may even be some students in our
school that we will never know about.
Project Christmas Sack is running for the third time. The
project aims to create a gift bag of presents to the value
of £25 that can be given to children and young people in
Coventry. This could be anything from vouchers, CD’s,
clothes, make up sets etc.
We are asking each tutor group to contribute to this
initiative. Heads of Year will be coordinating collections so
more information to follow.
.
This year we are working with
Coventry Carriers of Hope to
donate food to the vulnerable of
our community. They are
creating ‘Christmas Dinner in a
bag’ parcels for people in
Coventry that need them. This
is an important project for us
to support so please have a look
at the list below and try and
donate something towards this.
