MarinaWarnerisProfessorofEnglishandCreativeWritingatBirkbeckCollege,UniversityofLondon.Sheisanovelist,short-storywriter,andhistorian,knownforhermanynon-fictionbooksonwomeninmythandonfairy-talesandtheimportanceofstorytelling.ShehasalonghistoryofinvolvementwiththeAPGRD’sactivitiesdatingfromour1998‘MedeainPerformance’conference.MostrecentlyshepresidedovertheAPGRD’s‘ItalyandtheClassics’conferencein2016.
AliceOswaldisanaward-winningpoetwithanever-growingreputation.ShestudiedClassicsatNewCollege,andhasinrecentyearsincreasinglyvisitedOxfordandtheAPGRD.In2012,sheperformedherpoemMemorial,an‘excavationoftheIliad’forus,andshereturnedtotheArchiveinOctober2016toperformfromherlatestcollection,FallingAwakeandfromunpublishedwork-in-progress.

TheAPGRDwelcomeschoreographeranddanceartistMarie-LouiseCrawleyasArtistinResidenceforsixmonthsfromJanuarytoJune2017.
Duringherresidency,Marie-Louiseislookingattherolethemaskplaysinperformance,andinherownchoreographicwork.SheisalsocollaboratingwiththeAshmoleanMuseumtoexplorethepotentialofthefemaleperformerintheMuseumspace.Thisincludesputtingherresearchondanceperformancewithinarchaeologicalmuseumsintopractice,withperformancesattheAshmolean;onFriday3MarchsheperformedaspartoftheAshmolean'sSupersonicLiveFridayevent.ShewillalsobeperformingthereonSunday25JuneandaspartofourAnnualPostgraduateSymposiumon26June(seebelow).

PostgraduateSymposium2017:‘MovementandLimits’
OnMonday26andTuesday27JunetheAPGRDandRoyalHolloway,UniversityofLondon,willhostthe17thAnnualJointPostgraduateSymposiumonAncientDrama.
This year’s theme, ‘movements and limitsin the theory and practice of ancientdrama’, isatimelyresponsetothecurrentsurge of scholarly interest in massgeopolitical movement and nationalboundaries, in corporeality and formalconventions. Postgraduates and earlycareer researchers from a number ofcountrieswillgivepapersonthereceptionofGreekandRomandrama.
Day1attheIoannouCentre,Oxford,willincludeadanceperformancebyMarie-LouiseCrawleyintheAshmoleanMuseum,at11am;andwillconcludeat6pmwithafreepubliclecturebyDrIsabelleTorrance(Aarhus)on:‘(Im)/mobilityinTomPaulin'sSeizetheFire’.
Day2atRHUL,willincludealecture/demonstrationbyProf.ElizabethSchafer(RHUL)ofJaneLumley’sIphigeniaatAulis(1557)andadiscussionbetweenDrEmmaCox(RHUL)andProf.FionaMacintoshonprocessionalmovement.OurguestrespondentwillbeDrHelenSlaney(RoehamptonUniversity).

CelebratingKarolosKoun:Anexhibitionandone-dayconference
On Friday 22 September the APGRD will host an exhibition and one-dayconference to celebrate the life of Karolos Koun (1908-1987), widelyconsidered to have been the greatest Greek theatre director of moderntimes.
Theconference isco-organisedwithDrAngelikiVarakis-Martin (UniversityofKent).TheexhibitionistobecuratedbythetheatredesignersandKouncollaborators, Dionysis Fotopoulos and Lily Pezanou. Confirmed speakersand chairs include: Dio Kangelari (Thessaloniki), Hans-Thiess Lehmann(Frankfurt am Main), Fiona Macintosh (Oxford), Platon Mavromoustakos(Athens), Pantelis Michelakis (Bristol), Eleni Papazoglou (Thessaloniki),Giorgos Sampatakakis (Patras), Gonda van Steen (Florida), Oliver Taplin(Oxford),AngelikiVarakis-Martin(Kent)andHelenVaropoulou(Berlin).

TheAPGRDisverygratefulfortherecentdonationofanear-completesetofcopiesofthemagazine Theatre World, covering the period 1927 to 1965. Theatre World was issuedmonthly,andcontainsexcellentreviews,productionphotographs,andessentialinformationincluding dates, locations and casting for many productions in our database. The copiescomefromthecollectionofthe lateGrahamPalmer,whoranamail-orderbookbusiness,‘WWIIBooks’forover26years,afteracareerintheCity.MrPalmerdiedin2009,andthecopies of TheatreWorld have generously been donated by his children Carol andMylesPalmer.Weintendtohavethevolumesboundandindexed,inordertomakethisvaluableresourceavailableforresearchers.

On30-31March2017,the7thAPGRD/HistoiredesArtsatDesRepreséntationsColloquiumwasheldattheIoannouCentre,withsupportfromtheMaisonFrançaised'Oxford.SpeakersfromOxford,ParisOuestNanterre,Paris3,Paris13,andNantesjoinedindiscussionson the themeofCanonandRepertoire. The symposium featuredaperformance fromAPGRDartist in residence,Marie-LouiseCrawley:‘Whatremains?DancingtheMetamorphoses’.ThisoccasionincludedapartytolaunchthemonographbyAPGRDAssociateEleftheriaIoannidouinOxfordUniversityPress’sClassicalPresencesseries,GreekFragmentsinPostmodernFrames:RewritingTragedy1970–2005,alongsideaspecialeditionoftheonlinejournalAtlantide,Violence tragique et guerres antiques au miroir du théâtre et du cinéma,editedbyTiphaineKarsentiandLucieThévenet(Atlantide6,2017),whichcontainsarticlesfrompreviousAPGRD/HARcolloquia.
