Parent Action Groupsfor EducationEducate, Empower, Engage!

The goal of PAGE is two fold: 1) to equip WestDallas parents with the tools to become their childrens best advocates in education, and 2) todevelop a fully parent-led PAGE movement acrossWest Dallas. PAGE groups are neighborhood-specific, addressing the particular schools, parents, teachers, and needs in each sub-community of WestDallas.

We began the school year with one functioningPAGE group already underway in Lakewest, andsince the start of school have grown into five PAGEgroups in four neighborhoods: Lakewest,Westmoreland Heights, Across Hampton, and LosAltos/La Bajada. Being the first group started (withseveral pre-existing relationships through MercyStreet), the Lakewest group is our most consistentlyattended so far. Each meeting we are averagingaround twenty parents and have over seventyparents who have at some point attended or signedup for the group. We have easily over 100 parents

signed up or interested across West Dallas our challenge remains to build consistency and capacity.

The other groups are gradually growing, withsome meetings better attended than others. TheFamily Fun Night PAGE kick-off party at AmeliaEarhart brought out around 125 people. We have

Our greatest measure of success will be our level of informed, engaged parent leadership. TheLakewest and Los Altos PAGE groups are nowco-led by parent leaders and our goal is to achievecomplete parent leadership across the board. Todevelop an effective parent leadership team we mustensure that our parents are both equipped andcommitted to their children's education.

    The Young Developers

    ProjectTeens Plan Improvements

DFCC's 2010 Summer Young DevelopersInternship included eight students from PinkstonHigh School, seven weeks of an intensive, hands-onexperience to explore redevelopment plans for the Dallas Housing Authorityowned Lakewest shopping center that backs up totheir school. The Housing Authority served as their client and when they presented their ideas to TimLott, he commented that they listened as well as or

better than an consultants he had ever hired.

The internship allowed the teens to work withseveral groups including the Dallas HousingAuthority who is the owner and future redeveloper of the shopping center, Dallas City Design, BernbaumMagadini Architects, The Retail Connection, andUTA graduate students.

Throughout the program the interns experiencedpractical applications that connected their educationand their ideas with real possibilities for futureimprovements in the world around them. The Young

Developers shopping center redevelopment projectinvolved researching the most comprehensive andholistic community development approach for their target area, compiling asset maps from that area, and creating, through a charrette process, aland-use and social resources plan based oncommunity assets and innovative ideas.

According to the interns, the internship wasdescribed as follows:

This high school internship has been a wonderfulexperience for me, being able to work with Tim Lott,

Vice President of Capital Projects at the DallasHousing Authority, and partner with a group of UTAgraduate students to help us plan out the design of the shopping center. - Soloman (YDP Intern)

My experience with the Young Developers so far has been a major learning and motivatingexperience. The Young Developers' has motivatedme to become a more caring person in thecommunity which has kind of inspired me to becomemore caring in the world.- Daniel (YDP Intern)

Building upon the success of this project, DFCCsubmitted a proposal to The Real Estate Council for funding to expand the program in the summer of 2011. We hope to hear good news from that requestin a few weeks.
