a message from Anthony W. CroWell, DeAn AnD PresiDent, AnD Arthur Abbey ’59, ChAirmAn, boArD of trustees
As New York Law School approaches its 125th anniversary, we are in an important and exciting period of transition. Many changes are under way as we chart our course for an exciting future. Indeed, together, we are writing the next chapters of New York Law School’s history, and we know you stand proud and ready to help.
Like the great City of New York, we are resilient and getting stronger every day. We issued a provocative and groundbreaking Strategic Plan that has garnered national attention. The Plan covers every aspect of the School and reflects our continuing dedication to innovation, diversity, and excellence. We made national news by introducing the country’s first two-year honors J.D. program; we doubled our clinical offerings from 13 to 26 to ensure that every student who wants a clinical experience can have one; we earned Presidential Honors for our pro bono work; and we came back on our bar pass rate—we increased the passage rate by 14 points to 83 percent in one year. National Jurist magazine included us in its inaugural honor roll of law schools offering top practical training to their students. In addition, we ranked in the top third of law schools for faculty scholarship in a study by professors at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.
These steps are a great beginning to a bright future. Since last year, it has been our mission to make sure everyone knows that “We are New York’s law school.” Our new motto reflects a school that holds a proud and special place in the history of New York City and the world. You all know this, and, more than ever, others are taking notice too. With our Strategic Plan in place, we are focusing on every aspect of the Law School’s academic, career planning, scholarly, student and alumni engagement, fundraising, and operational activities. We look forward to a future in which NYLS continues to be recognized as an influential leader and innovator in legal education and scholarship. And we thank you for all you have done to make this possible.
The pages that follow highlight stories of giving from across the New York Law School community. We hope they will inspire your continued support of NYLS.
And so we are calling upon you to give. Your continued support will enable us to continue to implement our Strategic Plan, draw top-notch faculty, and develop new and innovative academic centers and programs. Our top strategic goal is ensuring academic excellence; as part of our ongoing curriculum assessment, we are evaluating and recommending teaching methods that provide an effective and demanding educational experience. Your continued support also enables us to provide scholarships for our students. We seek to make it possible for all qualified students to get an outstanding legal education at NYLS when they would not otherwise have the opportunity. Another top goal is career planning and placement. Your help, as one of the largest and most successful law school alumni networks, is critical to our students being mentored and obtaining the best positions to start their legal careers.
We are truly appreciative of what wonderful advocates for NYLs our alumni are and can be. This remarkable community gives back in so many ways. Your continued support will ensure that we maintain our tradition of excellence for the next 125 years, and beyond.
We thank you for all that you do in support of our students, faculty, and alumni.
When I went to NYLS 25 years ago, there were very few IP courses offered to students: one course covering patent law, two on copyright, and one on trademark. That was about the extent of the IP curriculum available. I didn’t have anyone in my family who had been a lawyer and was lucky to have had really great mentors, including Professor Nadine Strossen and Professor Emeritus Quintin Johnstone.
I was also fortunate to have several summer and part-time jobs that led me to realize what I didn’t want to do—I didn’t want to practice employment or insurance law. I wanted to focus on intellectual property. Having a technical background, including undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering from Columbia University and in physics from Centre College of Kentucky, a career in IP seemed natural: I like inventions that allow you to be creative and think outside the box about how technology works and enhances our lives.
In my private practice, I chair the Intellectual Property group in Arent Fox’s New York office and support the IP community in variety of ways. I currently serve on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Public Advisory Committee and was recently Chairperson of the American Bar Association’s Section of Intellectual Property Law. Dean Crowell just appointed me to the NYLS Intellectual Property Advisory Board. I am always looking for other ways to mentor and support young lawyers in the IP field.
After law school, I worked at an IP boutique, first as an associate, then as partner. I joined Arent Fox LLP in 2003 as a partner. My focus is on IP matters involving computers and the Internet, but my practice has exposed me to an astounding array of interesting technology and businesses as well as to a rich area of the law that is never less than fascinating.
When I was chairperson of the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law, I was invited back to NYLS to talk to students about careers in intellectual property. I was impressed with the school’s increased focus on IP since my days as a student, particularly, the creation of the Institute for Information Law and Policy and IP-related externships.
It was the outreach by Dean Crowell that got me thinking about endowing this scholarship; I thought it made a lot of sense. The nice thing about a scholarship is that you’re giving back to your alma mater. It’s a targeted amount—and it doesn’t have to be in the millions, or even the hundreds of thousands. You can also be specific about how you want the money spent.
I am impressed with the way the Law School is being creative with regard to its future and looking to shape its curriculum to the evolving needs of the market. I am so pleased that with this scholarship I can support both NYLS and law students with an interest in my chosen field of intellectual property.

I decided to endow a scholarship in memory of Sylvia D. Garland ’60, who encouraged me to apply to New York Law School and steered me through the application process. I owe a lot of my success to NYLS. Had I not gone to law school, my career in legal technology would not have been possible.
Before going to law school, I worked selling robots to the U.S. automotive industry. When it came time to go to law school, Sylvia urged me to go to NYLS.
Sylvia was my first cousin’s mother-in-law. Her story is emblematic of the great opportunities that NYLS offers its students. After raising her kids, she started a second part of her life. Sylvia went to New York Law School when she was about 40—at the time she attended, there weren’t many women in the class. Sylvia went on to have a successful practice for many years. She served on the Board of Trustees and as President of the Alumni Association, and was a great promoter of the School.
I took a lot of evening classes during my second and third years, which allowed me to work part-time as a paralegal at a law firm, Anderson & Company, a spinoff of Mudge Rose. After graduation, I was hired by that firm, which did a large amount of reinsurance litigation and developed scanning technology for document review. The firm spun that technology service into a separate technology company, and my previous experience in sales made me the logical candidate to sell its services. From there, my career in legal technology was launched. I worked at several legal tech companies, and in 2005, I co-founded DiscoverReady LLC, a successful e-discovery company, which was sold in 2009. Recently, I co-founded Lean Law Ventures, whose goal is to invest in companies with better legal processes that help corporate law departments.
At the time I sold DiscoverReady, I decided that I wanted to give back to the School. The best way I could think of was to honor Sylvia. The idea for the scholarship is to assist someone who may be raising kids, or who, like Sylvia, is starting a legal career later in life.
I also want law students to see my career as not atypical. There are many options out there for students with a law degree. sometimes previous work experience can be very valuable in these areas.
I’m particularly interested in how the curriculum can be augmented to teach students more about legal technology, entrepreneurism, and project management. To that end, I gave five NYLS students complimentary passes to attend the LegalTech trade show in February, and I spoke to them about careers in legal technology. I’ve enjoyed mentoring students about alternative career possibilities, and look forward to opportunities to do so in the future. It’s just another way of giving back.

one of a group of alumni who came together five years ago to support the black law students Association through the establishment of a scholarship.
I entered New York Law School in 1995, after working for several years at a small advertising company that I started in Austin, Texas. I had a terrific experience at the Law School in large part because of the first-rate faculty and the school’s diverse student body. I particularly enjoyed my courses with Professor Denise Morgan (who sadly passed away at a very young age) and Professor David Chang, both of whom challenged me to think analytically and helped me to sharpen my legal writing skills.
I also found the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) to be a wonderful source of support within the school. I established very good friendships through BLSA and received good advice about how to navigate my way through the rigors of law school. I, along with a classmate, Mirtha Sabio ’98, started the BLSA News Journal, which I am happy to report is still in existence and published annually before the BLSA Alumni Dinner. In connection with the BLSA Alumni Dinner, I am very grateful to have been selected as an honoree at this year’s event in April. It’s quite a privilege.
My career path from law school was unclear after graduation. I started my career as a temporary attorney for an agency for about a year. It was through the agency that I eventually got an assignment at the law firm Hall Dickler Kent Goldstein & Wood LLP. That assignment ultimately led to an associate position at the firm, where I stayed for about four years. Then, in 2004, Hall Dickler broke up, and I chose to go with a group that merged with my current firm, Reed Smith LLP. Four years later, I was promoted to partner as a member of the Commercial Litigation Group, and I currently serve as Chair of Reed Smith’s New York Summer Associate Recruitment Committee.
A few years ago, Emerson Moore ’99, Charles Whites ’01, and I got together and talked about how difficult it is for diverse attorneys to pay for the escalating cost of legal education. We wanted to form a scholarship program focused on helping diverse students offset the costs associated with law school. We met and talked to law school administrators, who were very receptive to the idea. Since its inception, we’ve had periodic receptions with students and alumni of BLSA in an effort to raise money to endow a scholarship. That effort continues. For example, in March 2014, we held a fundraising reception at the offices of Reed Smith, which Dean Crowell and other school faculty and administrators attended, along with students and about 50-60 BLSA alumni. I am pleased to report that we have nearly funded the first scholarship endowment. I am hopeful that in this calendar year, we will have the funds to grant a scholarship to a deserving student and that this scholarship will grow well beyond that amount through vigorous fundraising and support.
It is critically important that alumni support the BLsa scholarship program because it sends a message to potential students and funders that the New York Law school community supports and understands the value of having diverse attorneys in the legal profession. participation also inspires other classmates to give and helps alums and friends feel connected to BLsa and the Law school. In closing, please give generously and thank you for your support.

I knew I wanted to go to law school since I was 8 years old. It always felt like a “calling.” Only later did I realize that being a lawyer would give me the rare opportunity to combine my love of fashion with my passion for Perry Mason. I have worked in fashion law for more than 20 years.
When I graduated from NYLS in 1980, opportunities for women at big law firms were certainly available, but routes for advancement more limited. Still, after graduation, I became an associate at Kaye Scholer and found that it was possible to succeed. I find that this is still the case now, as a national chairperson at Katten Muchin Rosenman.

Having grown up in New York City, I gravitated toward local politics and urban development. I majored in Urban Studies in college, and throughout school, I worked for an affordable housing developer and various aspects of city government. When my parents suggested law school, I was skeptical. I didn’t want to spend the next three years trading philosophical musings about 19th-century case law or arguing about the merits of the Second Amendment. “New York Law School is different,” my mother assured me. And, much to my surprise, it was.
Although I’m only in my first year of practice as a real estate associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, LLP, the skills I learned at NYLS make it easier to sit at the table, understand the big picture, and ask the right questions.

Legal education at NYLS is about being an attorney, not just about learning the law. Most professors have practiced for many years and provide unique perspectives on how to negotiate deals, draft contracts, and spot issues in a variety of contexts, not just how to argue lofty subjects before the Supreme Court. Many of the students have already had careers of their own and come to NYLS with a specific purpose in mind, not just because it seemed like a logical step after college. Because of its size and location, NYLS has an incredible network of alumni whose careers demonstrate the multifaceted nature of the profession.
We support NYLS because it’s different. We believe in the attorneys it produces and want to positively impact the students who attend. As an adjunct professor, Karen helps train NYLS students to use legal skills both in and outside the courtroom; as a Teaching Fellow for the First Year Academic Success Program, Danielle taught students how to survive law school. That’s why, together, we developed a scholarship for students who demonstrate a dedication to teaching their peers—whether as a Teaching Assistant, a Teaching Fellow, or as a mentor.
Being a lawyer means something different to everyone with a J.D. It doesn’t always mean standing before a judge, arguing fervently for a client’s interests. We support NYLs because it recognizes and celebrates everyone’s vision of being a lawyer. and, if the legal profession is going to thrive with the changes to come, it needs a place like NYLs.

aN oNgoINg CommITmeNT:
aNNuaL fuNDI chose to attend New York Law School because of its history, its storied alumni (from U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan II to Judge Judy Sheindlin), and most important to me at the time, its dedication to, and support of, Evening Division students.
I was very fortunate during my time at NYLS to be able to donate money to the School and support various student organizations, including the Labor & Employment Law Society and Outlaws, the Law School’s LGBT student organization. Furthermore, my employer very generously matches—dollar for dollar—any gift I make to organizations like NYLS. A benefit of donating while in school was that I was able to see my donations in action, especially as they were deposited in the student organizations’ accounts.
After a friend and fellow Evening Division student re-established the Labor & Employment Law Society, I was invited to join as a Vice President representing the Evening Division. Because the Society had been dormant for so long, we needed resources to begin rebuilding. The money I contributed helped the Society host an annual panel discussion dinner with influential members of the labor and employment law profession. Additionally, we were able to host off-campus events that attracted students, professors, administrators, alumni, and practitioners. And we were able to accomplish all of this using, in part, our own funds and within the first year of being rechartered as a School Society.
Unfortunately, time did not allow me to get as involved with Outlaws, but, I believed in the good work the members were doing and wanted to provide my support, if not in person, then at least through a donation.
Donating the money I did while I was in school also allowed me to demonstrate to my classmates how much I believed in the School. Fortunately, many of the Evening Division students I studied with were well established in their own careers and understood how important funding the School was. Since we have graduated, I have stayed in touch with many of them, and I remind them to write a check to New York Law School each year!
Dean Crowell, the Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty are working very hard to ensure that New York Law School will be “New York’s law school” for many decades to come. Students and alumni are direct beneficiaries of the work that is being done and cannot, in good faith, be passive observers of our Law School family and community, especially as so many members of our School work so hard to guide and support the School through these difficult times.
New York Law School’s continued good name and reputation add value to our degrees on a daily basis. And the School makes its resources available to alumni at little or no cost, including career services, continuing education services, and library research services.
as NYLs approaches its 125-year anniversary, we have a special opportunity to re-affirm our support for our NYLs, and ensure that future generations of graduates can thrive in the careers of their choosing.
I did not attend New York Law School, although I often wish I had. It has been a privilege and honor for me to serve on the Law School’s Board of Trustees for the past 18 years and to give to the Law School that has meant so much to two members of my family.
My family’s relationship with the Law School runs deep. My father, Morris G. Zirin, who imbued me with my love of the law, was a graduate of the Law School’s Class of 1933. He attended the Law School at night because he had to work in a bank by day to support himself and his family. My father became a successful practitioner. He won numerous cases in the trial courts of our City, and won several landmark rulings in New York State’s highest appellate courts. His law partner, Eugene F. Bannigan, was minority leader of the New York State Assembly, and together they advised banks, businesses, and individuals on a variety of legal problems. My father was also a writer. He wrote a number of published short stories and novels. One of his novels, The Don, was a fictionalized account of the 1941 Reles case, in which Abe “Kid Twist” Reles, star witness for the prosecution against mobster Albert Anastasia, while in police protective custody, mysteriously plunged to his death from the window of a Coney Island hotel. In 1983, my father published another novel, The Counselor, when he was 80 years old. It was about the life of a trial lawyer, and recounted the hero’s rise from night school law student to successful practitioner. My father was always proud of his legal education at New York Law School, and a room in the library is named in his honor.
As it happens, the grandfather of my wife, Marlene Hess, whose name was David T. Wilentz, was also an Evening Division graduate of the Law School, Class of 1917. He commuted to the Law School from his home in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, where he worked as a reporter on The Perth Amboy Evening News, initially hoping to become the sports editor. His was a spectacular American success story. In 1935, as Attorney General of New Jersey, Wilentz prosecuted Bruno Hauptmann, the kidnapper and killer of the Lindbergh baby. It was Wilentz’s first criminal trial. Hauptmann subsequently was executed for his crimes. As the sensational case unfolded, reporters came from around the world to cover the six-week trial in a tiny courtroom in Flemington, New Jersey. As a result, Wilentz became the center of worldwide attention. He achieved eminence as a lawyer, who was the “man to see” in New Jersey. At the time of the trial, Wilentz was 41 years of age. Thereafter, he founded the Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer firm in Woodbridge, New Jersey, an institution. He also became a powerfully influential Democratic leader in New Jersey, who advised presidents, including John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.
I am sure that there are many such stories in the distinguished history of NYLs. I have always admired the institution as the law school of the american dream.
