With a new year on the horizon, it’s a perfect time to
dream about the future and set new goals and resolutions. If your plans include starting a new business, the best place
to begin is with the U. S. Small Business Administra-tion (SBA).
e SBA has o ces across our region, and lenders, counselors and resource partners who work in right
here in your community. With their help, we have been knocking down obstacles for entrepreneurs and small business owners for nearly 60 years.
In fact, for the scal year that just ended, we helped provide 632 loans to small businesses in the state of Wash-ington. Nation-wide, SBA had our biggest year ever.
How can SBA help you ring in the New Year?
Have you jotted down a few ideas on paper and need someone who can help you formulate a business plan? e SBA or one of our resource partners is a great place to start. You can nd local help by going to www.sba.gov/direct and typing in your zip code.
Or, check out www.SCORE.org, a volunteer organization, with more than 350 chapters and more than 10,000 mentors, many of whom have “been there and done that” when it comes to starting a business.
e best part is that SCORE mentors can o en help you for free.
Are you already a small business owner? Many small business owners have come to SBA over the past year, looking for ways to reinvent their business and grow in the face of tough economic times. Whether it’s getting an SBA loan, winning your rst federal contract, or learning the ins-and-outs of exporting, the SBA and our resource partners can help get you the information you need.
Why is all of this so impor-tant? Economists agree that small businesses are a big part of the solution to getting our economy moving again and creating jobs that we lost in the recession.
So, if you are thinking about starting or growing a business in 2012, let SBA help you. ere’s no time like the present to have that rst conversation with the SBA or one of our resource partners in Kirkland. en, celebrate the New Year!
Calvin W. Goings is regional administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administra-tion.

A er the long holi-day break, family tensions can reach
a boiling point—everyone might be glad that school has started back up again! Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce family stress, now and in the year ahead.
Ultimately as parents, we want family harmony and children who understand the di erence between right and wrong. Unfortunately, our disci-pline methods don’t always support this.
“Sometimes, getting your child to obey in the mo-ment is not as important as helping them achieve long-term success,” explains Youth Eastside Services’ Parent Coach, Jennifer Watanabe. A shout or put-down might e ectively stop an undesired behav-ior, but “the cause-and-e ect” approach is what Jennifer recommends. “By helping kids see the impact of their actions, you create
a teaching moment, rather than just a disciplinary one. at way kids learn to do better next time, which ultimately improves family
relationships and achieves the goal of better overall behavior.”
Be calm when speaking to chil-dren. If you raise your voice or get physical, your child will feel fright-ened—consequently, he or she will nd it
di cult to focus on what you’re saying. Sometimes Jennifer recommends having children use their own words to repeat back to you what you’re asking—this helps ensure they understand what you intended.
It’s important to have age-appropriate expecta-tions. If you’re unsure of what is developmentally appropriate for your child, talk with your pediatrician, look online at reputable websites (like American Academy of Pediatrics) or attend a class. For example, YES will launch a new
series of Positive Parent-ing Classes beginning in February.
Also, be reasonable in your expectations. It sets everyone up for disap-pointment when you ex-pect your kids to be perfect or achieve a milestone they aren’t ready for. With older kids, Jennifer recom-mends involving them in a solution—that way they are more likely to be success-ful.
e most e ective tool we have in our parent discipline toolbox is love. Make sure your children know they are loved, even when you are upset with them. If your children are
afraid of you or a harsh punishment, they will tend to hide their mistakes and even lie. And if you nd yourself in a constant discipline struggle, get help from a parent coach or counselor. Sometimes it’s hard to see our mistakes when we are in the midst of the battle.
Patti Skelton-McGougan is executive director of Youth Eastside Services (YES). YES is a nonpro t organization and a leading provider of youth counsel-ing and substance abuse services in the region. Since 1968, YES has been a life-line for kids and families, o ering treatment, educa-tion and prevention ser-vices to help youth become
healthy, con dent and self-reliant and families to be strong, supportive and loving. While YES accepts insurance, Medicaid and
o ers a sliding scale, no one is turned away for in-ability to pay. For informa-tion, visit www.YouthEast-sideServices.org.
