TheaterTeatro Sociale di Bergamo – Festival Donizetti 2017
Having fallen into oblivion following performances in 1839, this attractive, rare opera buffa was revived in 1973 in the Dutch city of Zaanstad (the Saardam of the libretto). It's staged on this recording at Bergamo’s Teatro Sociale as part of the Donizetti Festival in a new critical edition made for the Donizetti Foundation by Alberto Sonzogni.
The plot opens with Tsar Peter the Great working incognito as a carpenter in Sardaam's shipyard to acquire technical knowledge which he will then take back home. The mayor is convinced of this secretive arrangement, which leads to endless misunderstandings.
Conductor Roberto Rizzi Brignoli leads the orchestra of the Donizetti Opera; stage action is in the hands of internationally-renowned cinema director Davide Ferrario. Headed by the renowned bass Andrea Concetti, the cast comprises emerging stars in the belcanto repertoire, including Giorgio Caoduro, Juan Francisco Gatell, Irina Dubrovskaya and Aya Wakizono.

PerformersGiacomo Scinardo, piano
KEY FEATURES A new album from the young pianist Giacomo
Scinardo, whose highly successful recent recording of works by Mussorgsky was described by Fanfare as “exuberantly playful”
Born at a time when the music world was under the spell of Richard Wagner, Erik Satie was perhaps the first French composer who chose an aesthetic style that shunned the rampant Wagnerism of the day. His piano works – short, hieratic, sometimes disarmingly simple, often bearing ironic and misleading titles – went on to inspire many musicians, not least Claude Debussy, who was Satie’s friend and admirer. This album offers some of the composer’s better-known works, such as the beautiful Trois Gymonopédies and the remarkable Six Gnossiennes, their enduring popularity being perhaps the best testament to Satie’s highly original talent.

PerformersMario Carbotta, fluteCarlo Balzaretti, piano
KEY FEATURES Virtuoso works by Giulio Baldassarre Briccialdi, one of
the greatest European flautists of the 19th century
The recording showcases Mario Carbotta's exceptional musicality, warm sound, nuanced palette and impeccable technique
Giulio Briccialdi was one of the greatest European virtuoso flautist-composers of the 19th century. As such, he wrote mainly for his own instrument, alternating the customary variations on well-known themes with more lyrical and expressive original compositions. This album features a fine collection of works from both categories: Paganini’s Danza delle Streghe and the variations on Carnival of Venice, Verdi’s Traviata and on Berta's Aria from Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia alternate with Briccialdi's three fine Romances for flute and piano (occasioned by his daughter’s death and recorded here for the first time) and Le attuali emozioni d’Italia, written in the 1860s in the incandescent atmosphere that followed the country's national liberation wars.
