Post-Primary Ireland Assessment Package – a transition-based assessment package designed to support post-primary schools to monitor and assess their 1st year pupils.
The Post-Primary Ireland Assessment Package combines the Cognitive Abilities Test 4: Irish Edition (CAT4) Level E, Progress Test in Maths (PTM), the Pupil Attitudes to Self and School (PASS) survey and the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) A and B, offering schools a suite of assessments that can be used.
Receive data on a pupil’s Verbal, Non-Verbal, Spatial and Quantitative abilities with CAT4
Identify barriers to learning early on during a pupil’s first year in post-primary with PASS
Assess and monitor a pupil’s reading attainment and progress with NGRT and their attainment level in mathematics with PTM
How does a paper/digital package work?
CAT4 paper or digital can be used prior to entry to post-primary, followed by NGRT/PTM digital on entry. These tests can even be administered during English and maths classes to link in with the school Literacy and Numeracy strategy. PASS can then be administered at the end of 1st term. Both NGRT and PASS can also be administered a second time at the end of the school year to show progress. To identify progress in maths, schools can choose to add another maths test to the package.

We immediately got a snapshot of how our incoming 1st years are performing in both reading and maths. Combining this information with information from the Primary feeder schools has been invaluable in helping us develop Learning Support English and maths classes for September.

The Cognitive Abilities Test 4: Irish Edition (CAT4) is Ireland’s most widely used test of reasoning abilities. CAT4 identifies pupils’ developed abilities and likely academic potential. It highlights strengths, weaknesses and thinking preferences; providing the opportunity for personalised teaching and learning.
CAT4 Level E for end of 6th Class and Early 1st Year measures abilities of Verbal, Non-Verbal, Quantitative and Spatial Reasoning.
Results enable teachers to:
Identify and support gifted and talented pupils, as well as underachievers
Facilitate evidence-based target setting and personalise teaching and interventions to each pupil
Support pupils in better understanding themselves as learners, e.g. spatial thinkers, who may be likely to excel in STEM subjects can be better identified
Communicate with parents, pupils and stakeholders as well as provide evidence for inspections and self-evaluations.

CAT4 is not only one of the best measures of the transferable skills that constitute the basic building blocks of learning available anywhere in the world. But now that we have recent Irish norms, it is a fantastic resource for supporting teaching, learning and guidance in Irish schools.

As well as scores and the prof ile summary,
there is a narrative description of the prof ile
with implications for teaching and learning.
In a school setting, a pupil’s attitude to learning can influence their whole experience of education and have significant effects on pupil outcomes, engagement and wellbeing. Administered twice yearly, PASS enables teachers to build a complete picture of a pupil’s motivation, attitudes and engagement in learning. PASS provides invaluable evidence in any School Self-Evaluation (SSE), helping to identify more accurately strengths and areas for development.
An Online Intervention System is also available with over 2000 possible intervention strategies.
Results enable teachers to:
Identify and understand any attitudinal barriers to learning that may be affecting attainment
Inform teaching and learning strategies and intervention programmes
Help improve behaviour, attendance and overall achievement
Identify where any intervention may be required
Provide important information for pastoral support and working with parents.
PASS can be administered at beginning and end of school year.
Evidence will prove invaluable
in SSE

PASS provides us with an excellent way of understanding feelings and concerns students may have, as well as identifying students for targeted interventions. It allows us to identify the root causes of why quiet students may be lacking confidence in their ability and it highlights students who may be at risk of disengaging. It is a very admiring exercise for our school self-evaluation when the vast majority of responses about school are so positive.

PASS individual pupil profile
Used with groups to assess and monitor pupil’s reading and comprehension skills – and if necessary, phonemic awareness, NGRT enables teachers to identify pupils’ current levels of reading attainment and ongoing progression, as well as those who may be in need of further screening and support. NGRT is administered twice yearly and reports support schools to monitor progress and identify any pupils who may be in need of further screening and support.
Results enable teachers to:
Track pupil progress year-on-year
Set targets and intervention strategies
Identify differences between a pupil’s decoding and comprehension skills
Provide evidence of progress to help achieve the targets laid down in the National Literacy Strategy.
NGRT can be administered at beginning and end of school year.
Fully adaptive, user friendly and
links with the National Literacy Strategy

Using CAT4 with NGRT enables us to identify students who may not be reaching their potential in reading and allows us to carry out further diagnostic testing to see if there is a specific learning difficulty. The NGRT also informs our literacy for learning and life strategy.

Progress Test in Maths is ideal for monitoring progress over time. It supports schools in raising standards in mathematics by providing valuable diagnostic information about pupils’ strengths and weaknesses when assessing mathematical skills and knowledge in areas such as number, shape, data handling and algebra.
Results enable teachers to:
Benchmark knowledge and measure progress in maths
Identify pupil’s strengths and weaknesses
Set targets and personalise learning
Inform and evaluate intervention strategies
Communicate with parents and provide evidence for inspections.
Schools can also choose to add a follow up maths test.
Helps schools satisfy the aims of the
National Numeracy Strategy
