A recruiter from Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG) visited Naval Station Everett, July 21, looking for exceptional Sailors interested in join-ing their command.
NSWDG is located in Virginia Beach, and is a type two sea duty cno pri-ority one major command. The command is an elite counter terrorism unit that conducts research, and develops, tests, and evalu-
ates current and emerging technology. This technol-ogy is related to special operations tactics and joint warfare to improve Special Forces war fighting capabilities.
Sailors from Naval Station Everett who attend-ed the brief learned about the unique opportunities NSWDG has to offer, as well as the complex screen-ing process applicants will go through after applying.
“We are one of the few commands in the Navy that can go out and recruit, screen, and select their own personnel,” said Chief
Yeoman Toby Messenger (EXW/SW), NSWDG recruiter. “So it is our job to travel to bases around the world and find Sailors who are interested in com-ing to our command.”
The application and screening process for the command is very extensive and highly competitive. It includes a service record review, medical screen-ing and evaluation. Sailors must also have a clean record, be able to carry a top secret clearance, and pass various ques-tionnaires, psychological tests, and a formal board.
Applicants must be in top physical condition and be able to pass a swim test upon arrival.
If selected, Sailors then get stationed to NSWDG where they will continue in their current rate as a support tech for Naval Special Warfare combat operations.
“We work with the best of the best, everybody is a volunteer, and everybody is highly motivated,” said Messenger. “It is a guaran-teed enjoyable and reward-ing tour where you will see and do things that you wouldn’t see or do any-
where else in your life-time.”
Machinist Mate 1st Class (SW) Josh Meeks was very interested in applying for a position at NSDWG. “I have been doing the same thing for six years, now I’m looking for something with a bit more excite-ment,” said Meeks.
While at NSWDG, sup-port personnel could have opportunities to earn many special qualifica-tions, their expeditionary warfare specialist (EXW)
pin, and Combat Service Support and Combat Support Naval Education Codes (NEC).
Special qualifications include parachuting and fast roping, among many others. NSWDG support personnel receive special duty pay, and have some of the highest promotion rates in the Navy.
For more information on the application pro-cess, e-mail YNC Toby Messenger at: devgrure-cruitinug@vb.socom.mil.
