Logging in to the System Go to: https://nglsync.cengage.com/portal/
Enter your username and password.
Click the Sign In button to access your courses in the K‐12 Portal.
If you have forgotten your password, request a reset.

Logging in to the System (continued)
Click the Launch Course button for the course you wish to access (opens
a new window).
Click Help to display the Technical Support phone number and access a
link to submit an issue ticket (opens a new window).
Click Logout to exit the system.
Add Course allows you to register for an additional course (see “5”
below).
Adding a Course
After you click Add Course, enter the Course Key into the text box then
click the Find button. (Course Key is provided by your teacher.)
Click the Register For Course button then click the Launch Course
button for the course you wish to access (opens a new window).

Course Title Page
Navigate to specific sections of the course using the navigation panel on the left.
The “My Assignments” panel is always displayed on the course Title page, even if you have no
assignments.

Using the Header Bar
Click the 3‐bar icon to open and close the content navigation panel.
Click the magnifying glass to do a search and to access your saved
searches.

Click the matrix icon to access Assignments, to return to the Home
page and to log out.
Click Resources to display a list of links to available resources.

Resources
Click on Resources in the header to open the panel, then click on a
resource link to view or download it.
The number of pages is displayed above the content.
Click Download File to download a PDF of the file.
The list of resources will vary based upon which part of the course you
are viewing.
Resources that say “Printable” have lines for you to write on.

Navigating the Course Content Click on the topics in the left navigation bar to
access the course content. Items with triangles navigate to sub‐topics.
Use the scroll bar on the right side to move up and down
within the content on the page.
Click Back at the top of the navigation bar to return to the previous topic.
Use the left and right arrows beside the content to navigate
between pages. Click the National Geographic Learning logo to
return to the title page of the course.
Click on the 4‐arrow icon for full screen. Press the Esc key to
return to the window view.

Content Tools Click the Notes icon to write yourself a note for the displayed page and to access, edit or delete notes you have previously written for
that page.
Click the Bookmarks icon to create a bookmark for the page you are on, to jump to a bookmarked page or to delete a bookmark.

Content Tools (continued) Click the Highlights icon to view the text that is highlighted on the page, change a highlight’s color or remove a highlight.
To highlight text:
1. Use your cursor to select the text you want highlighted.

Content Features
Click on the Speaker icon at the top of the content to have ReadSpeaker read the entire page aloud.
Click on the Speaker icons within the content margins to have ReadSpeaker read a specific sub‐section of the page content.
The Modify Text switch in the content margins rewords a section of text. (See “Modify Text” section below.)

Content Features (continued) Using ReadSpeaker
Clicking any of the Speaker icons opens the ReadSpeaker controls at
the top of the content window and ReadSpeaker begins reading. Use these controls to play, pause, adjust the volume or change the ReadSpeaker options. (See “4” below.)
Clicking the Speaker icons in the content margins a second time will
restart ReadSpeaker at the beginning of that section.
As ReadSpeaker reads the text, it highlights the sentences and words in
the content.

Click the Gear icon to open the ReadSpeaker Settings.
In the Settings window, you can change the ReadSpeaker options for highlighting, reading speed, scrolling and pop‐
up buttons. To reset the options, click the Restore Default Settings button at the bottom of the list.
Click the Close button at the bottom of the Settings window to save your changes and return to the content.

Click the Modify Text switch to change that section of content to the
modified version of the text.
When the text has been modified, the Modify Text switch will be blue,
the content will be highlighted in light gray and a Speaker icon will be displayed next to the content.
Click the Speaker icon to have ReadSpeaker read the reworded text
aloud.
Use the controls at the top of the content window to pause, adjust
the volume or change the ReadSpeaker options. (See “Using ReadSpeaker” above.)
Click the blue Modify Text switch to go back to the original text. When
the original text is displayed, the switch is gray.

Some videos can be found within the course content. Look for the
yellow circle with a black center triangle and click it to launch the video.
The video will open in a new window.
Click the Play button to begin watching the video.
Controls at the bottom of the video window can be used to play/pause
and adjust the volume.
Click the Closed Caption icon to turn the video captions on and off.
Click the diagonal arrows to watch the video in full screen mode. Press
the Esc key to exit full screen.

Below the video is a link to download a transcript of the video
narration.
Open the downloaded file in your preferred word processor to read
the video transcript. The sections of text match the captions on the video.
The numbers above the sections of dialog identify the location within
the video.
This section of dialog, for example, begins at approximately 13
seconds into the video, and ends at around 17 seconds.

Some videos can be found in the list of Resources. Click Resources in
the header.
Look for “Reid on the Road” and click on the link.
Click on Resources in the header again to close the Resources panel.
The video will play in the content window.
Use the controls at the bottom of the video to play/pause the video,
adjust the volume, turn closed captions on/off, watch in full screen, and download a transcript. (See “Video” section above for details.)

Content Features (continued) Maps and Figures
Wherever you see a yellow circle with a plus sign in the center, you can
click it to open the image in a pop‐up window.
The cursor can be used to drag the pop‐up window around within the
course window. Place the cursor near the top of the pop‐up window and it will become a two‐headed crossed arrow.
To close the pop‐up window, click the “X” in the upper right corner of
the window, or click anywhere outside the pop‐up.

Assignments
The list of current assignments can be found on the Title page of
the course. (Click the Cengage logo at the top of any page to jump directly to the Title page.)
Use the up and down arrows at the top of the panel to scroll
through the list.
The date that the assignment will be available to work on and its
Due date are listed below each assignment.
To navigate to an assignment, click the name of the assignment.
The assignment page opens and your number of attempts is noted at the top of the page.
When you are ready to start working on the assignment, click the
blue Click to Begin button.

To view your assignments by unit and chapter, click the matrix icon in
the header and then select Assignments on the dropdown menu.
The “My Assignments” page lists your assignments under the
appropriate unit and chapter heading.
The due date, your score (if your teacher has graded the assignment),
and your number of attempts at that assignment are displayed.
Assignments that have not yet been graded will display a dash .
To navigate to an assignment, click the name of the assignment.
To view your graded assignment, click on its score.

When you click on a score, a window will pop up showing the date,
time and score for each of your attempts.
Click the View button to look at your graded assignment.
On the “My Assignments” page, units and chapters that have
assignments are highlighted in white.
Click on the arrow at the end of the name of the unit or chapter to
display or hide its list of assignments.
