58The National Film Awards were constituted in 1953 to recognise and acknowledge the best of Indian cinema in each given year, in all Indian languages. These are awards not given not only for the artistic worth of the films but also for their social value and relevance. Apart from the films themselves, the best contribution in each of the disciplines of filmmaking are awarded to the con-tributing artists and technicians.

He has directed several plays, as well as several films, most of which have gone on to win National or State Awards. For his contribution to Indian cinema, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna on June 20, 2011. When Gary Kirsten was carried on the shoulders of his players after India’s win, the look of surprise on his face was genuine. Unlike coaches who are magnanimous in defeat, will-ingly sharing the blame with the players while lapping up the kudos solo in victory, he belonged to the old school. One which believed that coaches should neither be seen nor heard. Kirsten, who quickly learnt the ways of Indian cricket, was happy to be the man in the background. It helped that he had played with some of the seniors and earned their respect as a tough, hard-working batsman for whom nothing came easily, but who made everything count. He made his international debut four years after Tendulkar. As a batsman he was at the other end of the spectrum from the Indian, studied where Tendulkar was natural, reined in by limita-tions where Tendulkar was a free spirit, a percentage player where Tendulkar was a risk-taker.
